I really despise the lob ball stuff as it makes a mockery of the game. Injury risk is massively overplayed and if it's that serious, just forfeit.

But the position player soft tossing is due to fears of the position player hurting his arm. IIRC Jose Canseco hurt himself pitching many moons ago and finally the teams decided they don't want anyone to exert any effort in that mop-up role. Wasn't that long ago that guys would at least be throwing in the 70+ mph range.
