yea i bet they try and use him at the deadline in a deal and if a home isn't found he'll just be waived, maybe someone will attempt a move for him then and we get some cash or a lotto ticket.

Why Hays and not Periera as trade bait. When the Sox got him, I remember reading on this forum that the reason the Yankees gave up on Periera was that he was injury prone.

I’m there. Yes, I get that Hays is also brittle, but how many times has Periera gone on the IL this year already? At least 3, is it 4? Let’s go with Hays and move on from Periera.

This is not a strong opinion from me, really it could be either one or both; I just have a little more faith in Hays, just a little.

Hays is 31 and expiring, Pereira is 25 and a rookie. The injuries have sucked, but not enough to not bet on the youth and team control if they are otherwise comparable.

They've also been acute "playing hard" injuries (cleat caught in the wall padding, concussion on a tough catch) rather than the soft tissue stuff that can become recurrent like Hays' hammy/calf.

Pereira playing all 3 OF spots also makes him less redundant with Grichuk than Hays would be.

Hagan Smith was promoted to Triple A Charlotte. Let's see if he can stay healthy.

Hagan Smith 1 inning, 1h, 1er, 3bb, 2ks

Hays (LF) and Pereira (DH) both in the lineup for Charlotte today

Hopefully they didn't run into each other.

Kyle Teel, I apologize for any curse I put on you due to my posting the day you got hurt. Please let whatever this injury is end up being far less significant and you are back crushing it before we know it.

I hate to do this Jason - but if it turns out to be significant, you're going to have to turn over your moderating privileges to me as a way to "repent" for cursing Teel.

Who becomes a productive reliable catcher first, this guy, or Teel?

Oh the horror

In the post game Chuck reiterated that it is being reported as an ankle injury. More updates to come…

Again "left ankle" and "likely" a Teel IL trip pending scans in the morning. Feels like an Achilles would be more definitive.

Colson "feels good" so sounds like nothing more than a day or two there

Yeah, Colson seems fine

Our thoughts are with Kyle Teel as he faces this next challenge. He was part of a great young team with unlimited expectations and now he isn't.

He was part of the team hitting a buck ninety. We might be upgrading, or holding serve here.

Teel only had 63 ABs post rehab and hit .190 with 2 HR.

Holding serve with Quero, who had 150ABs and hit .187 with 2 HR.

There were higher expectations for Teel than there was for Quero.

Teel chose to gain 20 pounds in the off-season and bulked up with weights. He will have time now to possibly consider a new path forward in terms of his conditioning and diet. Maybe lighter and faster like he used to be instead of heavier and stronger.

IMO Getz will not settle for Quero as the primary catcher knowing that Teel is toast until some time next year.

So what does all this weight training do as all we see are more and more MLB players on the I L with leg injuries. Baseball is a game of agility and you aren’t going to be agile if you’re muscle bound, the muscles become too tight and you look like Charles Atlas. Teel probably went overboard with his weight training in the off season, back in my tennis days the trainer at my club in Wheaton believed in just toning up, not building up the muscles. In the old days of baseball we never saw hamstring pulls, all the teams wanted for players were to be in shape with running, stretching and calisthenics.

I remember that weight training for baseball players was considered a no no back in the day. That being said I will take today's nutrition/fitness/recovery over anything they did in the past.

Give Roch a week behind the plate down in Charlotte and bring him up as the Sox full time catcher for the rest of the year.

Some weight training is helpful (i.e., focusing on reps with lighter weights rather than heavy weights) But on balance, Mite is right. Not sure why Teel, or any hitter, would choose to bulk up for power instead of focusing on other things like agility. leverage and bat speed.

Teel decided to bulk up, at least in part, in order to gain more power. As to whether that was worth it, the proof is in the pudding. An additional 20 pounds on the same hamstrings, knees, ankles, and Achilles is a lot. Pick up a five pound dumbbell in each hand (let alone 10 lb dumbbells), and then walk or jog holding those, or try a few squats.

Setting aside weight gain and conditioning as possibly contributing to repeated injury...look at a replay of the injury. Teel's spikes were loaded with the reddish sand/soil behind home plate. As SS2K noted, it looked like Teel's foot actually dug into that soft sandy soil before he made a move and injured it. Yes, I'm mad, and I'm blaming the Rangers' ground crew as well.

Do we see more injuries? I’d be interested in data. That was always just the pitcher’s lament in years past

I don’t know man. There’s some big boys out there playing baseball. It doesn’t sound from outside appearances like Teel would be a type to go against what trainers are telling him about preparation and rehab

That's one of the comments that came up about Cholowsky on draft day.

How he's so into weight training and conditioning, seemingly at the behest of his father.

"Cholowsky’s father, Dan, attended Cal before being selected in the first round (39th overall) of the 1991 MLB Draft by the Cardinals. He played eight years of professional ball before becoming a Major League scout.

Roch often joined his father on scouting trips, soaking up lessons that went well beyond the box score."

Pretty healthy kid though. They talk about his leg strength being in the 90th percentile of ML players. It would be very surprising if there was a downside to that

Roch is a different player with another set of conditioning and diet regimes. But you are right in terms of strength conditioning not having much of a downside. Like anything else though, moderation is the key. Teel gained 20 pounds in just one off-season, partially by his own admission, by increasing his caloric intake, including subs at his Godfather's deli. Maybe too much of a good thing too fast. I had a Godfather deli sandwich from Ambrosino's in Frankfort and had them cut it in half so I could eat the rest later. I'd like to try a KT sandwich at Parkwood Deli.
