If you want to know why the Sox wanted to get a look at Rock, look no further than his release point. It's a commonality across nearly every lefty the Sox have had around in the past couple years. It's low and very wide, with good extension. Newcomb is actually the most extreme release point of all the guys, even Schultz. Rock and Hudson (not to be confused with Rock Hudson!) are the most similar to each other. Eisert is in the same mold, he's just got a very different body so it ends up looking a little different. Chris Murphy is a little more conventional but still shades this way. What you tend to see from these guys (Murphy not included) is stuff that doesn't look great on paper but batters tending not to get good swings off. Also, pitcher having trouble throwing it where he wants. What we see with Hudson is his command isn't very good but he manages to just spray it all over the strike zone and the batters aren't hitting it so he gets away with it for the most part. But Hudson has dealt with near yips level of walks in the past, so it can come for anyone.
