This unwritten rule s%*# that comes with professional sports is so stupid. Like should Venable actively tell players to tank their stats so the Royals don’t get some hurt feelings? I guarantee the guys loved Venable for challenging that horrific double play call last night.

On the TV broadcast, Stoney addressed this directly by saying that Venable challenged the call to reward Vargas's hustle down the line and nothing more. He even said that those watching may be wondering why challenge but that when the team is playing so hard even when the outcome is almost certain that the manager has to reward that kind of behavior.

I had wondered about that aspect. The 21st run wasn't needed, but why not help Vargas get credit for a hit instead of a ground out?

I was out last night so I just watched the highlights. That was fun! Jacob Gonzalez looked like he had some good at bats which is exactly what we needed out of him.

Chase bouncing back is good too.

I had to look this up to verify, and yes, Nightengale's correct, here:

Screen grab from last night's game. Interesting that the last time the Sox scored 22 runs was the season they lost 106 games!

Also note that of these top 5 run-scoring games, 2 were against Kansas City, 2 were against Boston, and two were against the A's. That 29 runs in 1955 looks like it was maybe the A's sixth home game after moving to Kansas City.

fwiw royals broadcast had no problem with it either. RBI is used in arb cases, if he hadn't challenged I'd be pissed at Will.

Yeah, and as I just posted in the other thread - Venable was right. It wasn't even a tie between Vargas's foot and the ball going into the mitt. It's not like he tried to challenge the call when Vargas as clearly out or where the umps had to look at umpteen different angles to figure out the right call.

Fans paid good money to see the best the players have to offer...not just go through the motions of finishing a lopsided game.

Thats the thing, they didn’t let up or go through the motions or half ass it. The entire play was played in full. And challenged. Is what it is, I’m not gonna be angry about it happening but it would suck if a brawl breaks out today and we lose a bunch of players to suspensions

Generally I like the “brawls” (usually it’s just 2 or 3 dudes throwing punches and everyone else holding them back, with the bullpen arriving about 5 hours late, not sure that really constitutes a brawl). And I think having one tonight would be exciting however, I don’t want injuries. Could care less about suspensions. Injuries scare me. So maybe no fights. Also…if the royals start some s%*# because of a manager challenge, regardless of the score, that’s some sore ass loser petty bullshit. They deserve to get knocked around if they do that.

I would think there's a definite difference between playing balls out and running up the score. Were they bunting or stealing bases up 20? I could see the logic of TLR's admonition of Yermin swinging on a 3-0. (I don't agree, I just see the logic.) Play hard, don't take advantage of the sitch. Purposefully drawing out another crooked number keeps the guys on the field longer, they start pressing to get out of the inning, make mistakes, get hurt, etc.

I’m waiting on an asshole hitter challenging a called ball on a horribly missed pitch, just to show on the scoreboard how badly the pitcher missed the strike zone.
