Castillo to Sox for Dominguez, Boston Smith, Nolan Jones per Passan

I would have guessed you could have had Castillo for free if you're taking on all the money. Getz probably didn't need to include a prospect but panicked.

I don't think Getz 'panicked,' but he obviously wanted to get this deal done tonight. Until we see the prices on the rest of the arms available out there, it's going to be a little too early to judge on what is the actual cost on this trade. IMO, Getz gave up essentially nothing in this deal, except financial flexibility for the future. Boston Smith likely isn't a catcher long term, is 23 yrs old with half his time in A+ ball this year, and does have swing and miss concerns. He's not exactly a prospect. I think Getz cashed in on selling high personally.

  • Yeah, much better to hear JR for the last 45+ years, minus an aberration. Am I right?

  • I’ll be honest…I’d have been way more mad if we dealt Bonemer or Carlson for Detmers for this deal.

I could care less about the money and moving Siranthony is fine with me. Boston Smith was a fun story, but will I take Dominguez as a fifth starter replacing Noah for the rest of the season. We get an innings eater and bullpen protection .

You mean Castillo as 4/5...?

there won't be a cap, meaning there probably won't be a floor either. the players union has made it abundantly clear that a cap is dead in the water

If there is no cap and no floor, there is probably no baseball in 2027

I’m starting to consider. I can’t comprehend how any legitimate Sox fan who has endured the reign of Jerry Reinsdorf would be upset when a savior owner finally arrives. Just mind boggling stupid and not worthy of conversion at that point.

Savior? conversion? Very odd religious references. You think Ishbia is a savior? LMFAO. You must think Ishbia cares about anything but himself ? Oh sure, a Private Equity Investor who was born with a silver spoon in his mouth and used all of the tools of private equity to enrich himself (largely at the expense of others) is going to be the savior of this team. More on point here, Ishbia is not engaged in this trade deadline or in any decisions that impact this team. But I guess it is just fun to dream wet.

Approximately 20% of the top 50 starting pitchers are 33 or older.

Going to take a 2nd half rebound in a smaller ballpark for Castillo to fit into that category.

Feels like an overpay and we figured in the sellers market that could happen.

Not sure the innings he can eat are worth it at his current stat level. He has to be better.

There's certainly a threading the needle , faith in our coaches vibe to this.

Guess we'll see if fans are right this time on whether it's an old Sox or new Sox trade.

The juice is going to be hard to be worth the squeeze but not impossible.

Incorrect. That's Merrill Kelly money. Starters cost so much money on the open market. I'm not saying Castillo is some big surplus value, but a short term FA deal for a starter will cost a ton for a guy who will not excite you much.

Yeah we're so not used to paying anyone that as fans we've lost track of what the rest of decent career good pitchers are getting. Back end of contracts to pay for past performance is rough though if you aren't getting the benefit of the front end.

I am very anti-pitcher in the sense that I'm never into heavy investment into pitchers as they tend to be unreliable due to injury. HOWEVER I will also mention that pitchers do not reliably hit the aging wall the way position players do. So I think it is perfectly logical to see this season's dip by Castillo and fear the worst, but pitchers are also more apt to bounce back to career norms in their mid 30s than hitters are.

Do you have data on this? Ive havent seen it. Pitchers, in general, have later peaks than position players now but much of that is tied to debut dates, and the fact that pitchers today aren't hitting the innings levels until their mid to late 20s where as position players are being brought up younger than ever.

The aging curve itself appears to be starker for pitchers (avg peak periods are shorter), but pitchers who survive the curve have had more sustained success into their late thirties but these guys are the exception to the rule. I dont see this as some statistically significant difference. And Castillo has every sign of aging in an arm. Walks are up, k's are down, contact rates in and out of the zone are way up, and his former strength (righties) has gotten steadily worse 3 years in a row. This doesnt strike me as a guy avoiding the curve.

He's also someone with big game Playoff experience. I dunno. He wasn't my first choice, we still might get that, but he's a proven veteran with playoff experience.

We weren't ever going to get our 1st choice. My guess would've been something where most fans initial reaction is unhappiness.

Unfortunately it's much harder to reach upside in a 33-34 year old past his prime guy than it is in young players. And since the move requires immediately results the Sox don't have the luxury of patience. May need Bannister , Bove , the Pope and the Wizard to combine their skills.

How many times did we hear “Robert only makes 20 million, him being on the roster doesn’t impact other moves”…only for it to absolutely impact things.

We didn't draw fans then like we are now. Also when we look at his contract didn't he only get $20M this year and he was traded before the season started ? Your memory is selectively betraying you based on always looking for the worst.

Seems to me the Mariners dumped a fairly big contract and a fading pitcher on us. The Sox did not give up much. So we shall see how the rotation is set up. There is still a long way to go in this season. Fatigue and injury are always lurking. Now, if nothing else we have a little depth.

Correct , my bad on the typo

How is castillo worth anything at his full contract. Guys got negative value. Just weird. He's washed

Yep, Castillo should be a salary dump at this point and the Sox actually gave up a decent prospect and took on a lot of money for him. This is a an absolute stinker of a trade by Getz.

If you took out Boston Smith, maybe the trade would make some sense. I can’t fathom how taking on a worse contract than the one we gave up required us to give up a legitimate prospect. I don’t even have words honestly.

This.

I think this ends up more like the Freddy Garcia trade than the James Shields.

Freddy Garcia was 27 years old when the Sox acquired him. Shields was a washed up bum and 34 years old. Guess what? Castillo is nearing 34.

To grab onto a healthy 33 YO MLB pitcher that has a pretty good record, aside from having a bad year right now, you might’ve overpaid because of his contract. But if the Sox were gonna overpay , at least they didn’t damage the system they’ve started to build. I was worried, there were all these people lining up to put everything on the line for 2026. This is a relief.

33 is old in baseball. We acquired Shields when he was 34 and he was done soon after.

Castillo was pretty good up to this year, hopefully a change of scenery will help him and the Sox but I not holding my breath.

Here are Castillo’s road ERAs since joint the Mariners:

  • 2023: 3.62

  • 2024: 4.25 (+0.63)

  • 2025: 4.71 (+0.46)

  • 2026: 5.07 (+0.36)

What is it about these numbers that screams good pitcher?

I’ve slept on this trade and am desperately looking for reasons for optimism, but am struggling to find them. I will say this, if this is our only SP move and we don’t get someone to slot in between Burke & Martin, then I truly hate it. If we can land a #2 and push Castillo down to the #4 spot then it’s more digestible.

Ultimately, we aren’t a serious club if we keep Fedde in the rotation. Don’t care about his smoke & mirros performance as of late. I appreciate the guy going out there and gutting it out, but he’s a ticking time bomb and one who is taxing the bullpen heavily in the interim.

People were upset at the thought of Wolkow and Smith for Peralta. I take that deal all day over this one. Plus, you wouldn’t have all that money sunk into a declining pitcher going forward and could sign a younger starter in the offseason. This trade stinks.

Trade grades from the Athletic are a D and C+. Not exactly glowing write-ups for us.

I think we should all reset and recognize that this is basically a one year rental, the end of this season plus whatever we get next season. He isn’t making that 180 innings next season unless baseball miraculously agrees on a CBA before the season. He isn’t here to be the top of the rotation starter, he is here to help this young staff cover innings and get this team to the finish line without needing a opener for your starter or having to watch Schultz like a hawk. It’s not a GREAT move but it’s a good move if they are truly not done and continue to add to C and RP

I would have preferred to roll the dice on Peralta. Obviously we should all wait and see what other guys cost. My biggest issue is the multi year commitment we are making here on a guy clearing trending downward. Maybe there is some gas left in the tank, but damn those road numbers don’t inspire much hope.
