But that’s simply not true. The Sox are paying Castillo $22.75 million of their payroll for next season. You are basically excusing Getz for making the poor decision to give big money to a mediocre reliever for two years. He also supposedly paid for Seranthony’s $2 million buyout. So yes, Getz was able to dump Seranthony’s bad contract but that doesn’t mean Castillo will only cost $12-13 million next season.

Dominguez was signed to a guaranteed contract for next year as well. So the math to get to that $12-13M next season is the same as this season (pro-rated at this point of course).

Yes, I understand that. But just because he managed to dump Seranthony doesn’t mean Castillo only costs $12-13 million.

I mean it is functional short hand for "costs over and above what we already paid" and not for Castillo only makes X.

I guess I just don’t think he should get credit for dumping a bad contract that he himself gave out. If it was someone like Benintendi that Getz managed to dump, then he should get the credit because he was technically a Hahn signing.

To me it just means that despite attendance being up 25%, we still aren't willing to spend money and would rather deal prospects instead.

That too. Also, with every move being for a non-rental it seems like these deadline acquisitions were pretty much half of Getz’s work for next offseason.

He 100% wasn't in "go for it" mode. He did what he needed to do to get by, with the full rationale that the best days are still ahead and not to spend too much.

I think he was right to do that, hopefully after whatever happens with the labor stuff, JR doesn't f*** it up again. But as some point, the broadcast has to give the audience some credit. Yesterday, they made it seem like Castillo would be competing for Cys while he was getting lit up, just as he has been all season.
