Castillo to Sox for Dominguez, Boston Smith, Nolan Jones per Passan

Featured Replies

Fans don’t really care about “positively spinning” accounting mumbo jumbo.

That’s how they ended up sending E.Johnson and Tatis, Jr. to SD in the first place.

And both for declining “Big Game/Name” pitchers in Shields and Castillo with obviously diminishing performance/crispness of stuff/peripherals.

  • Yeah, much better to hear JR for the last 45+ years, minus an aberration. Am I right?

  • I’ll be honest…I’d have been way more mad if we dealt Bonemer or Carlson for Detmers for this deal.

  • Chicago White Sox

Has nothing to do with praising or liking the trade. I totally understand not liking the trade or thinking they should've done something more or different. Be honest in the assessment though. Not mentioning Seranthony Dominguez is disingenuous. They took on Castillo's money but they got rid of Dominguez and his salary within the scope of the deal. It's like $12-13 million for Castillo in 2027 essentially and he'd probably get close to that on the open market still.

Keith Law didn't write it. It was someone named Johnny Flores Jr. I couldn't find him or I would've tagged him.

But that’s simply not true. The Sox are paying Castillo $22.75 million of their payroll for next season. You are basically excusing Getz for making the poor decision to give big money to a mediocre reliever for two years. He also supposedly paid for Seranthony’s $2 million buyout. So yes, Getz was able to dump Seranthony’s bad contract but that doesn’t mean Castillo will only cost $12-13 million next season.

Dominguez was signed to a guaranteed contract for next year as well. So the math to get to that $12-13M next season is the same as this season (pro-rated at this point of course).

Yes, I understand that. But just because he managed to dump Seranthony doesn’t mean Castillo only costs $12-13 million.

I mean it is functional short hand for "costs over and above what we already paid" and not for Castillo only makes X.

I guess I just don’t think he should get credit for dumping a bad contract that he himself gave out. If it was someone like Benintendi that Getz managed to dump, then he should get the credit because he was technically a Hahn signing.

To me it just means that despite attendance being up 25%, we still aren't willing to spend money and would rather deal prospects instead.

That too. Also, with every move being for a non-rental it seems like these deadline acquisitions were pretty much half of Getz’s work for next offseason.

He 100% wasn't in "go for it" mode. He did what he needed to do to get by, with the full rationale that the best days are still ahead and not to spend too much.

I think he was right to do that, hopefully after whatever happens with the labor stuff, JR doesn't f*** it up again. But as some point, the broadcast has to give the audience some credit. Yesterday, they made it seem like Castillo would be competing for Cys while he was getting lit up, just as he has been all season.

Yeah, but it goes back to the idea that they paid for Dominguez to provide a level of performance at one position. That level of performance has now gone out the door, and you've obtained someone else at a different position. The costs themselves don't off-set, and no one would say Castillo now is only making 13 million which is "what he'd get on the open market."

If you wanted to trade Castillo, you need to move the whole 23 million meaning the market won't trade you for him because he doesn't actually cost 13 million that is being claimed to be his real cost "in line with the market."

I mean the dollar costs absolutely offset, which is what is being said. How you want to value the performances for those dollars is a completely different story. I think the opinion is that both players were vastly underperforming their deals, which isn't exactly earthshattering.

I'm struggling to see how Castillo suddenly gets paid less because you traded another asset that cost money?

Castillo's price is 23 million. This implication that Dominguez is worth zero dollars so his entire salary is an off-set is tough to accept. The Sox lost the player they valued as a 10 million/yr player 6 months ago. That's not some net monetary gain that limits the cost of Castillo on the open market.

This is fair. I don't care how much Castillo makes. I care about how much Jerry Reinsdorf would be willing to spend on the 2027 team. Castillo at $23 million with Dominguez at $10 million is different than Castillo at $23 million and Seranthony Dominguez off the team with no salary committed. That was my basic point. I'm shocked that anyone took Dominguez.

I'm not excusing him for anything but I do think the deal was fine. Am I GetzBot now?

Technically no. But this is a Jerry Reinsdorf org and every last cent matters.

I actually think it's the opposite. They weren't willing to trade good prospects. They took on plenty of $$.

Your Cult of Getz and St. Getz profile image are on their way!

Some were speculating about the Sox trying for Hunter Green. He just went on the IL and is having elbow surgery.
