Are the Red Sox cheating?

Featured Replies

Hearing reports that certain members of the Red Sox bullpen have been drumming on a street light when the opposing pitcher throws a fastball.

this board makes it hard to be a white sox fan sometimes.

They're on a 31-5 stretch after looking like guaranteed sellers, literally a historic run.

Unfortunately, they look like one of those teams that starts off slow and then takes off like a rocket all the way to the World Series. It happens every now and then.

Get ready for a BoSox vs. Dodgers or Cubs World Series.

Yeah, you can lock them in there with some certified NL powerhouse. You know, like baseball's richest team and defending World Series champs, or that second place team that hasn't won its division in 6 years...wait

The below is a heat map of where Brazoban has thrown his sinker in 2026. The bottom image is the pitch in question that was hit. You'll notice it's almost like the Red Sox just have a.... scouting report!

I know you already looked at this already, but If we're talking scouting report, he throws his sinker on 2-2 just ~18% of his career/this year. Meanwhile his change usage is at 67% on 2-2. If youre sitting on a pitch there, you're likely sitting change. There's not going to be too much change in profile between the two there, but important distinction regardless. That second picture also does not do it justice. He hit that ball at his ankles. Really a nasty pitch. Regardless of all that, I dont think youre going to get any story from just a single pitch.

All I'm saying is that once in a while there's a team that looks to be totally out of the race in the first couple of months and then catches fire and soars to the World Series and Boston looks like they fit that pattern. Nothing is guaranteed.

As far as the Cubs go - yeah, they still have to get past Milwaukee. But lots of teams make it to the WS without winning their division. Unless you think they won't make it as a wild card?

.....I'll also add that the 2021 Braves are the most recent example of this. They were under .500 at the break and then totally caught fire and ended up winning the WS. We've seen these kind of teams before. Boston reminds me of this, but of course, they play the games for a reason.....anything can happen.

I will admit Red Sox have a horse shoe up there you know what right now…but I tip my cap. They are hot…it happens and move on. The meatball changeup was the 9th inning pitch to have back and that sinker…tip your cap…that said I also wouldn’t be surprised either as it did seem like they knew what was coming but that could also be Sox pitching predictable

Kind of think something will come out in a few years about them cheating.

After they win the World Series. And of course, they will be allowed to retain the title and teams will be punished for any perceived retaliation.

Sadly this is why this topic—which would have been treated as totally ridiculous conspiracy theorizing in the pre-Astros era—is something you have to consider. MLB incentivized cheating with its flaccid response to the Astros scandal. I’m surprised we haven’t seen it more, and I sadly will never dismiss cheating allegations out of hand again.

I don't know if they are or aren't but I wanna say this, as someone who worked many years in IT

Every team uses pitchcom, which is a simple device that uses UHF to send likely encrypted signals from the catcher to the pitcher.

There's a device you can buy online, it's been around for years, it's called the flipper zero. it can intercept any radio signal, such as 2.4ghz RF, Bluetooth, Wifi, UHF(with an extra module) , encrypted or unencrypted etc and store each signal as it's own profile. people use these to steal your key fob frequencies, among other things.

you could save each pitchcom input from the catcher as it's own "pitch profile", and just find out which signal corresponds to what pitch

It would be insanely easy for someone on the Red Sox (or any team) to have someone in the stands relaying signals to each batter immediately after intercepting the pitchcom information from the catcher.

once I first found out about pitchcom, flipper zero was the first thing I thought about and how teams could steal signs with it digitally

Flipper Zero. Bought one for my son. Fun times…

I can't find any info on if pitchcom uses rolling codes or not, I would assume it does. however with AI tools, and people building their own portable "cyber deck" (basically a tiny Linux powered laptop with the hardware capable of RF scanning, people have been using these to access flock cameras), I'm not sold on pitchcom being unhackable at all

Yeah, that’s why my son couldn’t unlock newer car doors with the Flipper Zero. Because they went to rolling code key fobs in the mid 1990’s.

Never underestimate someone else’s ability to not update a password or to just leave old security measures in place out of laziness lol.

I used to audit company’s networks in the Chicagoland area. Numerous companies had security camera systems management portals accessible on the Internet with defaulted admin credentials.

Idk. Its pretty ridiculous to accuse a team of cheating with zero evidence based solely on the idea that they beat you badly and are on a hot streak.

When I was playing, we'd call that being a sore loser.

This is where my mind went when thinking of possibilities. It seems completely plausible. Their clutch hitting right now is simply on another level, one we don't see too often. They do, indeed, look like they know what's coming.

I would like to see a team go back to flashing signs between the legs against them and see how it goes.

Not sure that's what's going on here, but aren't you the poster who actually accuses Jim Thome of cheating all the time with zero evidence based on the fact that he was good, big, and played at a time when other people were cheating?

How many strikeouts per game did the Red Sox average before July 3rd and how many after?

Essentially unchanged — the offense is striking out at the same rate.

Before July 3 (games 1–85, through the July 1 loss to Washington): 698 strikeouts in 85 games = 8.21 per game (22.0% of plate appearances)

July 3 onward (games 86–113, through Aug 5): 228 strikeouts in 28 games = 8.14 per game (21.4% of PA)

So a difference of about 0.07 K/game — noise. Whatever turned the season around (they've gone 25-3 in that stretch) it wasn't contact. The gains show up elsewhere: they're scoring roughly 5.6 runs per game since July 3 versus about 4.2 before, with a big jump in slugging. Same number of strikeouts, much more damage on the balls they do put in play.

All the time? Well, no. But if you think Jim Thome didn't take steroids im not sure what to tell you. There's also plenty of evidence... like him ballooning in size from his debut to his period of home run masher.

Dont know if youve noticed, but guys dont suddenly get that huge anymore!
