Reports are mixed on Loaiza. White Sox GM Kenny Williams called the Rangers and told them if they could get Victor Zambrano from the Devil Rays he would send Loaiza to Texas for Zambrano. The Rangers, who were prepared to deal outfielder Kevin Mench for Zambrano, weren't going to trade Zambrano to the White Sox for Loaiza.

 

Not that it matters to the Yankees, but they saved $12 million on the deal. They are paying $1 million to the White Sox this year, $1 million next year and $2 million in 2006.

 

Contreras, who went 15-7 for the Yankees and was 8-5 this season with a 5.64 ERA in 18 starts, left Yankee Stadium when informed of the deal, which he could have vetoed but didn't.

 

"He figured if they don't want you, why stay?" said someone who spoke to Contreras, who was 0-4 with a 16.44 ERA in five games against the Red Sox.

 

After exhausting every avenue to get Johnson, the Yankees turned to the White Sox about 70 minutes before yesterday's 4 p.m. non-waiver trading deadline.

 

Contreras for Loaiza wasn't the only deal discussed by the Yankees and White Sox, who almost swapped Scott Proctor for lefty Scott Schoeneweis. But the Yankees believed Schoeneweis wouldn't be happy in their bullpen and scrapped the deal.

With his new pitches, Clowneweiss would be a much better reliever than a starter.

 

He throws 3 mph harder as a reliever; his mechanics/control is sharper; change-cutter combo adds another dimension to getting RH out; hitters only see him once.

 

But I guess he'd rather be a miserable failure of a starter, a folly that will undoubtedly culminate in his back-elbow ailment returning. Real smart, Scott. rolleyeyes.gif

What i mean is that Cashman and Kenny said the deal was done Yesterday way before not 70 minutes like the Post says

I would be surprised if the Sox bring Schoney back next season. His attitude alone will sink him here I believe.

I'm just glad that we got rid of that chump Elo.

I'm going to enjoy seeing that punk give up 6 runs a game for the Yankees (of course knowing the Yanks he will still win 20 games... }

I just wish that we could of gotten rid of Shoey and brought Diaz up.

If he doesn't like it put his ass on waviers and hope someones dumb enough to take him.

If this team does somehow scrap themselves into the playoffs, our bullpen is going to be very, very good. Schoeney/Garland or Contreras/Marte/Politte/Shingo.

 

Let's hope we can get there first, though...

Can someone inform me on this Proctor guy? How old is he? Is he a reliever/starter?

I'd rather have Schoeney than Proctor. I don't know what y'all are thinking. Proctor wouldn't help at all this year. He's 27 and just made his major league debut this year. Plus, it's not even like he been good this year. He's got a 5+ ERA.

I would've loved Zambrano.

I love Schow...he's my favorite player. I don't f***ing want Scott Proctor.

Knowing that what you say is the truth I might add that Show needs to suck it up and pitch with more consistency and win some games, if he remains as starter #5. He seems to be making some big demands for a guy that has been struggling big time after that fast start to the season.

Guillen backs Sweeney

DETROIT -- White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen said he almost called general manager Ken Williams when he heard one of the many trade rumors that have been circulating in the past week.

 

Guillen heard the Sox were considering moving highly regarded outfield prospect Ryan Sweeney.

 

"I almost called him back to say that if you are going to give up Sweeney for any reason, think about what you are going to do," Guillen said. "I thought we better get something real good because this kid has the chance to be a superstar."

This deal was in the works back when Brown went down and he was going to come for ML talent and be placed in our pen. Since that time ELO became expendable. I pointed out around the AS break that I thought Torre had an unusual trust in ELO.

 

Now I get it. The Yanks traded for a two time All-Star wheather the second time was deserving or not.
