What is a "yipeta"?

Someone got too close to his yipeta (four-wheel drive vehicle, from the word ‘jeep’), and got shot in the stomach and hands with some type of pellets.

Yipeta is slang for SUV.

Yipeta is slang for SUV.

The article says the men were passing by the SUV, which may diminish the likelihood of it being self-defense.

White Sox shortstop Juan Uribe and his brother are being investigated in the Dominican Republic for their alleged involvement in the shooting of two men, according to El Nacional newspaper.

No one was killed in the incident, which took place Friday night in San Cristobal, about 15 miles from Uribe's hometown of Bani. According to the newspaper, the two victims suffered wounds but were released from a hospital.

According to a police report, Uribe and his brother, Elpidio, thought the victims had walked too close to their Jeep. Dondolin Alessandro, 41, a captain in the Italian Navy, suffered wounds to his stomach and hands. Antonio Gonzalez Perez, a farmer who tried to intervene, suffered a left-elbow injury, according to the paper.

Alessandro was in the Dominican on a humanitarian mission, the newspaper reported.

A White Sox spokesman said Sunday night that the team had been in contact with Uribe's agent and would not comment until more information had been collected. Telephone messages were left for Martin Arbrurua, who represents Uribe.

Col. Gabriel Santos Melo and Mayor De La Cruz Blanquin are in charge of the investigation, the newspaper said.

The incident occurred two weeks after general manager Ken Williams endorsed Uribe as his shortstop for next season. Uribe, 27, is coming off a disappointing 2006 in which he committed more errors (14) than he drew walks (13).

Uribe hit .235 with 21 homers but had only a .257 on-base percentage. He is scheduled to earn $4.15 million next season, with the Sox holding a $5 million option or $300,000 buyout for 2008.
