From what i hear he is the 'next big thing'. That may be an over statement but at least we have a pitcher in our farmsystem to finally look forward to seeing kind of like McCarthy back in the day..

I think Poreda sounds great and all, but I didn't like reading that he says he wants to throw 70-90% Fastballs, and his secondary pitches are "good enough". I don't think he will be able to survive on 70-90% fastballs in the majors. Big league players can smash fastballs, he needs at least 1 more great pitch before I can see him doing anything in the majors.

Poreda seems like a good guy and smart, too.. Howver, this is soley based of an interview on whitesox.com. At least he is a potential closer in the making, but if his secondary stuff is coming along as people are saying, he could become a top pitcher.

He'll prob end up in the bullpen as he really has one pitch, though that pitch is extremely heavy.

I'm trying to rationalize what we're hearing now based on a series of posts/conversations that took place on the board back in November. For example:

 

"LHP Aaron Poreda: Poreda complained of a hurting shoulder & elbow and the player development guys said he had complained much of the year (this is why he missed a good portion of time mid-season). Poreda is a disaster with his arm swing and is an injury waiting to happen. He possesses some power stuff, but he has no feel for a breaking ball. He can't spin a curveball or a slider. At this point, he projects much more of a pen-guy than a starter, but even that is in question because of his inability to throw a breaking ball to keep Left-Handed hitters honest. The West-Coast coordinator & regional scouts both lost their jobs for this draft pick recently. Should say something about his future ability." BureauEmployee171

I'm not trying to be critical of anyone. I'm just trying to understand how people could be fired for drafting the player who is considered the top prospect in our organization... and who management is talking about fast-tracking to the majors. What am I missing?

That our minor league depth is really really bad

Bartolo Colon only used his fastball back in his hay-day, and i think that he was pretty successful.

Johan throws a ton of fastballs too. He uses the changeup as that go-to pitch. I don't hardly ever see him throw the slider, maybe a handful of times a game, he really doesn't even need to.

According to this Santana has thrown less than 60% fastballs each of the past three seasons

What I'm trying to say is that the vast majority of his pitches are fastballs and changeups, and that you'd think there would be a lot more breaking pitches but there really aren't.

Yea but at least those other pitchers probably have other good pitches to compliment. He basically just said all he has is his fastball, and if I read that, im sitting fastball every single time. If his other pitches aren't good as well, you won't have much trouble.

It doesn't matter. It's all good. We will likely trade him in a year or two for someone else's top minor league pitcher anyway.

If you have control and command of the pitch, you can have a long career throwing fastballs. I have heard Hawk say many times that the best pitch in baseball is the properly located fastball.

Randy Johnson has 2 pitches. Given, both are like HoF caliber pitches, but he has two pitches all the same.

 

If Poreda can make a decent slider out of his slot, hes got a chance to be a starting pitcher.

I'm just happy the Sox finally have another pitcher in the minors who could be a potential stud #1. As happy as I am having Swisher...the cupboard felt kinda bare when DLS was traded.

I think that one's quite simple.

 

1) We have by far the worst system in the majors, so being the top prospect in it ain't no thang. I think Slav could be a top 5 starter in our system.

 

2) Management is probably full of s*** and not intending on fast-tracking him.
