This is a great trade for Milwaukee. They didn't have room for LaPorta anyway, with Braun and Hart at the corner OF spots and Prince at 1B. Even if they lose CC they still get the picks.

There's no way CC resigns with the Brewers, and really, I find this to be a stupid deal. They gave up a top prospect for a half year of CC. They did the same thing with Linebrink, and it was stupid then and remains to be stupid now. Maybe if he was the one piece keeping them from a World Series would it be smart, but thats not the case.

 

Sure, the picks from CC are nice compensation at the end of the year, but they aren't nearly as certain as a player like LaPorta is (which isn't to say LaPorta is certain, but a player that has already done stuff in the minors is more of a sure thing than picks for players they don't even know will be around).

That might be true, but I think the hidden loss here is that the Indians most likely lose the "hometown discount" in an attempt to resign Sabathia. I think this is a pretty significant trade, at least symbolically. If you trade away your ace for prospects a minimum of 1-2 years from MLB, doesn't that indicate you don't expect to contend for 1-2 years?

LaPorta could be ready at some point next year. He's destroying AA right now, and he's 23, so you're looking for him to be ready next year, or the year after at the latest. All Cleveland is saying is that they aren't competing this year.

That's too critical. Sure, they're giving up more than they'll get in draft picks, but that's the price you pay to get the reigning CY winner for half a season (and a completely deserving CY, too). He's way, WAY more valuable than Linebrink.

 

I'm not going to say he IS the missing piece, but if they get lucky with Sheets's health, I wouldn't rule it out.

Is it just me or did the Brewers pull one over on the Indians here? A pretty good AA prospect (LaPorta) and two low level prospects for an ace pitcher? Even if the Indians resign Sabathia, I think they could have gotten more in return.

I also realize that this move is big for their fan base and is a money maker for them. However, they aren't going to resign him and they gave up a player who's going to be tearing apart pitching in a year or two for the league minimum.

 

Personally, I think 6 years of LaPorta is more valuable than a half season of CC. Just me though.

Why not go all out for it his year, they are losing Sheets and now CC, thats 4 draft picks. They can make a few more trades to bolster their staff and bullpen and rebuild their farm system in a year.

 

I wouldn't be shocked if they got both Fuentes and/or Brian Roberts too, they have many prospects.

Thats the quote. With the race the Brewers are in, and with CC only having this season left on his deal, obviously the Brewers want to get as many starts out of him as possible, and not wait right until the deadline, which would take away 5-6 starts from CC.

This trade doesn't affect the regular season much IMO. The Brewers and Cubs were both going to make the playoffs before this trade, but this just assures it (Cardinals have proven to be pretty good, but they will finish 3rd). Question is, who will be the Wild Card and who will win the Division. However, the Brewers better make those 5 draft picks in the top 35 work next year, because LaPorta is going to be really good and Sheets and Sabathia are both gone after this year. I just hope Sabathia signs with an NL team, or else this joy is temporary, but I'm glad he's gone from the AL Central for good (I think). This move is all about October 2008, and the Brewers hope Sheets can stay healthy. Sheets/Sabathia is the best 1-2 punch in the NL obviously, with Webb/Haren not far behind if Arizona can get in. The Brewers are taking a HUGE risk though, they could end up looking awfully smart or just incredibly stupid. Their lineup and rotation are top of the line, but their bullpen still blows. It is funny that Cubs fans thought they would get C.C. though, and now they think the A's will trade them Harden even though the A's are in the race and have an option to keep Harden next year. I wish the Cubbies luck with getting Randy Wolf and hoping Rich Hill turns it around though, as I don't think they have enough to get even A.J. Burnett or Erik Bedard. Cubs fans would lead you to believe their system is good, and they'd be very wrong.

Okay, but you also have to consider the two prospects they'll get in the offseason (I know they're not LaPorta and haven't done anything in the minors yet, but top draft picks aren't picked out of a hat, either), and the fact that half a season of CC is particularly valuable to the Brewers right now, when they're contending and have a healthy Sheets. Probably just for another week or so, but still... 1/2 season of CC for a contending team + 2 high draft picks ~= LaPorta, imo.

The Brewers rotation is going to be one of the top in the NL now with Sheets, Sabathia, and Parra as their top 3. Not to mention Suppan and Bush aren't all that bad for #4 and #5.

Sabathia has been quoted as saying that he wants to play out west closer to home (Oakland) and would like to play in the NL cause he likes to bat, so chances look good that he will be far away from the White sox for most of what left in his career...

They'll want to get as many starts from him as possible as two extra starts from CC could mean two extra wins which could be the difference of whether they make or don't make the playoffs. I'm also assuming if they did somehow fall out of things, they would put CC back on the market (since it doesn't seem as if they are going to make a significant push at resigning him).

 

IT appears that for all intents and purposes this is a rental. However, if things pan out and they make some noise in the playoffs, they could have increased attendance and be able to up the payroll which means the resigning of people like CC or Sheets.
