September 24, 201411 yr QUOTE (BigHurt3515 @ Sep 24, 2014 -> 02:18 PM) I loved the feel of the phone and it didn't feel that big too me. I am looking at the Spigen ultra fit case. It is their thinnest and less protective case they have and it is only $10 on Amazon, figured I would get it just in case I want to have a case on it if I go somewhere. I highly recommend Spigen. They make some of the nicest looking and best quality cases.

September 24, 201411 yr QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Sep 24, 2014 -> 03:49 PM) Never heard of them, now must have them. Fairly durable too. I had their Slim Armor with my Nexus 5 and I didn't care when I dropped my phone.
September 24, 201411 yr I don't think I'm ever going to go bigger than the HTC One (basically iphone 6). I think any returns would be small. Also, it's surprising how little room you get when browsing the web on most sites anyway.
September 24, 201411 yr QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Sep 24, 2014 -> 11:15 AM) My galaxy 3 stopped charging so had to get a new phone. Went with the 5. Does anyone else have problems with the headphones not being recognized? I bought a case, think im going to return it because its impossible to open the charger latch when its in it, who designs this nonsense. They worked fine for me, but I am just using a cheap $5 set of headphones.
September 24, 201411 yr QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Sep 24, 2014 -> 04:45 PM) They worked fine for me, but I am just using a cheap $5 set of headphones. Yeah this turned out to be user error. The headphone jack requires more pressure than other ones, so I was annoyed and jammed it in, then it worked lol.
September 24, 201411 yr So Apple prematurely rolled out iOS 8.0.1 today and it killed carrier connect/TouchID. If you installed it OTA, the only thing you can do is a restore via iTunes on a Mac/PC to revert to 8.0. Jackasses. IMO, fragile hardware is one thing, take better care of your s***, but releasing software that was obviously untested should get people fired over there. And I'm not talking about a few minor bugs...it literally prevented TouchID from working AND prevented your phone from connecting to it's carrier.

Yea wayyy to many bugs in this release, never should've made it to market at this state.
September 24, 201411 yr IIRC wireless Genie invokes a one-time $99 installation fee. Funny, since it takes infinitely less installation than running coax
September 24, 201411 yr I am sure when you are signing up for a new contract you can negotiate that 99 fee to be waived. Just have to ask and be forceful and point out you won't subscribe if they charge you.
September 25, 201411 yr http://arstechnica.com/apple/2014/09/apple...iphone-6-fixes/ iOS 8.0.1 update disables TouchID and cell service. Apple has pulled the update, but if you see it right now, don't download it. They are telling folks that if you have updated, you have to do a system restore

Just have to ask and be forceful and point out you won't subscribe if they charge you. Yeah, new customers would get all installation free. The NEW Genie system is wireless (everything but the one base unit). That came out like 6 months ago. Re: the screens on phones, i've had my Note 3 for a while. Never got a case, never use a screen protector. Seems like a waste. I've dropped this thing from 3-4 feet onto hardwood floor and cement floors, even right on the corner, and it's fine. Some nicks on the aluminum decorative cover but that's it. With gorilla glass you don't have to worry about scratches (you have to seriously gouge it to leave a mark, so just watch your keys/tools).

Funny, since it takes infinitely less installation than running coax It's a $99 fee for the wireless unit, not so much for installation, but I'm going to be saving about $40/month over cable so I don't mind shelling out the $99 up front.
September 25, 201411 yr Author QUOTE (Y2HH @ Sep 23, 2014 -> 03:10 PM) Personal preference I guess...I don't really watch movies or anything on my iPad mini (or phone), I use it to read/browse, and 5.5" is more than big enough for that. You know, stopping to think about this for a minute, it's truly amazing how much has changed since 2007 when it comes to phones/tablets/computers, especially phones and tablets...it's truly spectacular where we've come from in such a short amount of time. First 3.5" was considered huge, complete with low-res screens, then 4" with higher resolutions came around, then 5", then 6"...and it's crazy how much it's changed our habits. Browsing from the couch used to be a chore (in comparison to today), but with bigger phones and tablets, it's now quite amazing. and now enter the smartwatch...

I wonder how far its come in the last year.

September 27, 201411 yr QUOTE (SleepyWhiteSox @ Sep 26, 2014 -> 08:24 PM) Yet the rumors persist... Let me rephrase that... I doubt they will only make a new 6 inch Nexus. I think a lot of people would be put off by it, but then again the Nexus phones aren't really a consumer-first device. It's designed for developers. That thing is huge...just look at the spacing of the navigation buttons. They're usually pretty close together on the phone UI. That's more or less a tablet UI on a phone. I think there's a good possibility they make a 5.2 inch version based off the new Moto X and the 5.9 inch version that's shown up there. There was a picture of that phone next to an LG G3 on reddit yesterday and someone made a to-scale cut-out from that image. Apparently, it'll be similar in height to the iPhone 6 Plus, but slightly wider. I also doubt this thing will be cheap...say good bye to the sub $400 price tag. All phablets are expensive, especially ones with a 2K 6 inch screen. Edited September 27, 201411 yr by chw42
September 27, 201411 yr QUOTE (iamshack @ Sep 25, 2014 -> 11:45 AM) and now enter the smartwatch... Speaking of that, I've had the Moto 360 for a week now and while it's not as good as I had anticipated, it's not as bad as some of the original reviews. Reviews said the battery was awful...it's not. I've never gone lower than 20% on it yet. You have to charge it every night, but it'll last at least 20 hours if you don't over-use the watch (i.e. play around on it for no apparent reason). Android Wear still needs work. There's still too many annoying bugs, like the watch disconnecting from your phone 4-5 times a day for no apparent reason. They also need to give you more options for quick replies so I don't have to speak into the watch to say something as simple as "see you later" (that's not a quick-reply option, I have no idea why). There's no speaker on it, so you don't get a voice for turn-by-turn and it doesn't do the vibrate once for left and twice for right like the Apple Watch does. It does, however, vibrate twice when you get close to a turn. Overall, it does what it's supposed to do, give you a glance at your notifications, tell you the time, let you set alarms/timers, and use Google here and there (I found out how old Ellen Page was in about 10 seconds yesterday). But in order for it to gain mass appeal, there needs to be a lot of refinement by Google and a lot more development by developers to take advantage of the form factor.

September 27, 201411 yr Reviews that talk about battery life that don't use some sort of standardized test do often understate the battery life. Not because the reviewer is necessarily biased, but because they were constantly using the thing to test it. When there is a standardized battery test, I find that it usually overstates the battery life.
September 27, 201411 yr So far enjoying the galaxy 5. Big improvement on speed and function over the 3.
