We have been on one for almost 24 hours now.

Good game from Ozzie. Went with his gut and he was right.

If the team wins - the fans think ozzie makes the right choices.

If the team loses - the fans think ozzie made the wrong choices.

 

 

Even if he makes the same decisions on different days - his decision making process is not what fans use to evaluate his managerial skills...

Whats better is when a team wins, the manager doesn't really have that much of an impact on the game. But in a loss, its almost solely the managers fault. Such stupid logic

They are stupid good. I think they are the best team in the MLB this year. Even when they have a bad game they are in it at the end.

As of right now they look like the best team in baseball IMO. Very balanced.

I would have been happier had Ozzie put Thornton in to overpower Griffey, but there's also the problem with the roles in the clubhouse. Jenks is this team's closer, to have Thornton close one instead of him would make for some bad drama.

 

Ozzie also let Danks get through 8, which I thought was ballsy and worked.

 

The thing is, when Ozzie puts himself in a position to fail by putting in Randy Williams or playing Mark Kotsay instead of Andruw Jones, that's when he gets into trouble and that's when he should be criticized. Today was a day where his instincts worked, tomorrow, it probably won't. Just like players, Ozzie can have good games and bad games. Today was a rare good one.

Who would they have up instead? Jack Wilson can't hit right now because he's got a wrist injury. Rob Johnson can't go in since he's the backup catcher. Bradley probably wasn't going to play.

 

Griffey was their ONLY option there, other than letting Adam Moore hit. Either way, Thornton probably retires him.

You don't pull your closer unless he gives up the tying or go-ahead runs. Period.

Nothing instills confidence in your closer more than pulling him in late april when he's 3-3 in saves

Well, he also has had one "escape by the skin of his chinny chin chin" save (can't remember the specific game, I think it was last week against TOR though)...the 2-2 lead that was blown, and also the Minnesota game, that could easily have ended up very differently except for Scott Ullger getting so excited he drifted into the Twilight Zone and allowed Hardy to go.

So because it is not customarily done, we should not consider doing it?

 

I agree with doing things a certain way because they make sense. I do not agree with staying with custom sheerly because it has been custom in the past. If the custom is silly, which, when it comes to the closer position in baseball, it certainly is - there is absolutely no logic behind the closer's position in baseball - then you change it in favor of doing the the thing that allows you the best chance to succeed.

They also made it pretty clear they didn't want to use Matt again if they didn't have to because of the extended outing the other day. At the end of things you have to have multiple guys in your pen. If Thornton is going to be counted on to do everything, we aren't winning a damned thing anyway. Jenks learned his lesson and did what he needed to do in the situation.
