Prince Fielder Speculation

Unfortanatley it will likely cost the Sox both Viciedo and Hudson to get this done. With Peavy out- this would hurt us unless KW goes and gets another pitcher prior to this move.

Attaining LaRoche and a mid to back end of the rotation starter won't cost Viciedo or Hudson. If the other team asks for them, the Sox should find someone else.

If we're adding a "Mid to back end of the rotation starter", then there's really no obvious reason not to go with Hudson instead. He's close enough to big league ready that he's got a good shot of being a mid to back end of the rotation starter this year, and there's possible long-term benefits in letting him pitch for the big league squad this year.

That is also banking on the health of the rest of the rotation. Danks has never had any real injury concerns, save some blister problems from a few years back, but Floyd went down for a month last year, the Sox have almost coddled Buehrle at times in recent years, and Freddy Garcia is anything but a clean medical bill. Having a 6th guy - which is what Hudson would be - is still nice to have.

On top of that, if the Sox do actually make a big move for a bat and need to trade Hudson, getting a back end of the rotation starter becomes a bit more of a pressing need.

I don't trade for a back of the rotation starter and send Hudson down "In case" someone gets hurt.

I make that trade after someone else gets hurt.

I'd agree, but an injury could easily happen in August or September. If it's in August, and the Sox are in 1st place (or even 2nd place with Minnesota/Detroit in 3rd place still within reach), either team could put a claim in on any feasible pitcher the Sox could get and the Sox are still left with Carlos Torres.

I think a lot of what the Sox are going to do in regards to rotation depth depends on how they feel about Carlos Torres. If they feel he can be an adequate #5, they won't. If they don't, it's very possible that they will.

If Hudson falters some, although his stuff looks good, just had zero control of it Sunday, I would give Pena a shot at starting, when he is in for multiple innings he doesn't look like he overthrows or tries to make a perfect pitch every time and seems effective.

Would you give up Viciedo+Morel+Hudson for Fielder if he agreed to an extension, but also meant saying goodbye to Paulie after 2010? I would probably say no deal, but we'd still have a strong lineup for next year

Why would that mean no PK? I imagine he'll sign for 5-7 mill for 2-3 years which I'd do in a heartbeat. Then you can just rotate them at 1b and dump Kotsay's ass.

I still don't think that package would be enough though, and at this point I'd keep Viciedo.

Because I doubt Konerko signs for 1 year, and I don't think Jerry would tie up that much money between him and Fielder at the same time

I'd salivate over a Prince/King (Kong) rotation at DH/1B... *drool*

I don't know where exactly the salary limit will be next year (hopefully this winning streak will help) but I think it's entirely plausible that JR would be willing to go "Over the JR limit" to hold onto a guy like Fielder who he believes is a long-term, marketable player who will put fans in the seats (a-la the $17 mil a year offer to Torii Hunter).

I just don't know how to think about the middle/latter part of a $25 million a year deal to an overweight DH.

It rubs the lotion on its skin or it gets the hose again.

I can't see a Fielder trade happening. I read where Boras is telling Milwaukee that he expects Fielder to get a Texiera-like contract and that is ths basis for any extension he would sign with the Brewers. It makes it a catch-22 sitauation. I guess that would make him more available but why give up a ton if you can't sign him.

The White Sox, Rays and Angels could be fits ( for Fielder ), but rival officials doubt the White Sox would have enough to offer the Brewers unless they offer Daniel Hudson and Gordon Beckham

And on to Dan Haren or Adam Dunn.

Though what would they do with Gordon? They have Weeks and Escobar...

They also have Brett Lawrie.

Pretty much. Especially when we have no idea how Peavy is going to bounce back. I DO NOT want to see the team mortgage the next five years to go for it this year. I'd rather roll with what we have.

They're trying to move Weeks now as well.

I don't get that sentiment at all. The team has been on a ridiculous tear -- one that I've never seen in my time as a fan. They are kicking the s*** out of everybody. They should definitely address the main weakness (offensive production/consistency) and go for it this year.

If someone was available for a reasonable price, I'd consider it...but the response is...next year, we really need some young guys to fill the holes we're going to create due to FA. That's still my big worry.

If the price is right? Sure. I just don't want to see some drastic overpay.

What is the right price for Fielder?

It sure as hell ain't Beckham and Hudson. No f***ing way. Especially now that they're serious doubts that Peavy will ever be the same again.

Nowhere near as much as the Brewers are asking for.

Got that right. And the Brewers are doing exactly what they should do. I don't fault them. You just don't succumb.
