What happens when Chris Sale bulks up?

Featured Replies

We hear Stone talk nonstop about how Chris Sale should be happy to be getting MLB sized meals and bulk up...but what happens when/if he does.

Could it negatively affect his delivery? Or could he (somehow) throw harder? If he threw harder he'd essentially be knocking on Chapman/Strasburg territory...though it will probably go down as a starter.

But that's where the bulking up comes in. If he gets bigger, would he be able to keep his fastball where its at right now as a starter?

I would assume he would throw 110 mph

I would assume he would throw 110 mph

Steve Dalkowski

He is sometimes called the fastest pitcher in baseball history and had a fastball that probably exceeded 100 MPH. Some experts believed it went as fast as 115 MPH, others that his pitches traveled at 110 MPH or less.[3] As no radar gun or other device was available at games to measure the speed of his pitches precisely, the actual top speed of his pitches remains unknown.

AKA he threw nowhere near 100

Nothing. He's still a pen arm and will be a very good one.

This question reminds me what Ranger fans/org wanted McCarthy to do. (to throw harder, avoid more injury risk) The kid then adds about 10-15 pounds of muscle in the off-season.. and is now even more injury prone than he was before (I believe he had surgery on his shoulder a while back). Adding bulk doesn't add velocity. Hell the two players you named are actually relatively skinny guys. (Pedro Martinez was a tiny f***er as well) Thats like saying Sabathia/Broxton should lose weight so maybe they can touch 100+ instead of 95+. It's pure god given talent. Either you have it, or you don't. There were guys in high school I played with that threw much harder than I did and they were very thin guys. There was also a fat guy who touched the mid/high 80s on my team as well. I'm sure there are many guys in the minors now that wished they could hit at least the mid 90s. (especially if their other stuff/repertoire is already fringe or average) Chris Sale is obviously very fortunate he has an arm like that. (how fortunate with his delivery though.. we'll see in time)

I'm still waiting for Anorexei Ramirez to bulk up. It shocked me when the say he lost 5 lbs. during last offseason.

If he's 98 lbs and throwing 100, he'll either slow down as he puts on weight or he'll end up knocking out catchers.

People will complain that he's too fat the first time he blows a save.

I dont think its a given that he bulks up. Some people just arent able to put on a lot of weight, no matter what they do to attempt to put it on. Look at Randy Johnson, he always was a tall thin guy, he put on a little bit of weight, but not so much that you would say he bulked up.

I think we'll see Sale come into camp next year with a little more bulk on his frame. I can't see this changing his velocity in any significant way, but there's potential that it could lead to an increase in durability as he transitions into the role of a starter.

He's going to be a very good starter. His best pitch, his changeup, isnt even featured out of the pen.

Regardless at some point his elbow is going to give out and he will need TJ. Hopefully we've unloaded him by then.

I like this. I like this a lot.

If he bulks up, he'll be all the way up to 145 pounds.

One Alexei, One Sale, plus one Vizquel, equals one Prince Fielder.

And became the best SS in the league.

Defensive, sure.

FWIW, according to his AAP page, Sale is listed at 183. He lost a fair amount of mass early this summer though (5-10 lbs) in a bout of food poisoning.

i still remember the good ol days when Jenks was throwing 100 mph

Bobby was still touching 98-99 earlier this season.

That trade would never go down.

Sale is uncomfortably skinny.

I think he meant in terms of "mass".

He looks like one of the dudes that played MLB baseball in the pre Steroid/Selig era.
