That's going to happen at the end of next season anyway right? So why not get paid for next year whether it happens or not?

I don't think it works that way. No play, no pay.

Exactly. So if he takes the buyout now, then he gets paid part of next year's salary no matter what; it gets paid to him right now.

Let me write out the scenarios, maybe that'll make more sense. To make the numbers easier, I'm just going to assume that he's making $12 million this season, $12 million next year, and he'd take $6 million next year in a buyout.

Scenario 1: no lockout. If Hamilton stands pat, he makes $24 million. If Hamilton accepts the buyout, he makes $18 million + playoff bonus + whatever contract he gets next year.

Scenario 2: 1/2 the season lost in a lockout. If Hamilton stands pat, he makes $18 million (less if the union accepts league-wide salary reductions). If Hamilton accepts the buyout, he makes $18 million + playoff bonus + whatever contract he earns for next year, even if it's just a short $1-2 million veterans deal somewhere. Plus, he gets all that $18 million up front.

Scenario 3: full season lost in a lockout. If Hamilton stands pat, he makes $12 million. If Hamilton accepts the buyout, he makes $18 million + playoff bonus.

The only scenario where Hamilton makes more money is if there is no lockout or a very short lockout with no large league-wide contract cutbacks...AND you assume that Hamilton would only get a crappy contract next year. All the other ones, he risks taking quite a bit less money if there is a long lockout.

Love Kevin?

So how could the NBA dunk contest not have been rigged after seeing the KIA commercial.

The Los Angeles Clippers have bought out Rasual Butler, and he plans to sign with the Chicago Bulls, a league source told ESPN The Magazine's Ric Bucher.

Butler must clear waivers before he can sign with the Bulls.

Butler had the best scoring season of his career in 2009-10, averaging 11.9 points and 2.9 rebounds. This season he's averaged 5.0 points and 1.9 rebounds.

Butler is making $2.4 million in the last year of his contract.

I like me some Business as Rasual.

I like me some Business as Rasual.

He's shot over 40% from 3-land almost every year of his career except this one.

It had to be rigged. The commercial wasn't even a replay...it was just too perfect.

Also, diggin' the possible Butler signing.

In New Orleans he was.

In the Vinny-offense, he hasn't been so hot.

Big 3 there from Billups.

Be interesting to see if the Knicks can hang on here.

How was the dunk contest rigged? If Griffin doesn't make his 2nd dunk in the first round, then he wouldn't have advanced to the finals.

The Eastern Conference NBA Playoffs are going to be amazing. Not just quality basketball, but great storylines as well.

Im just glad the east is so much better than its been in the past

Guess who's tied with the Heat in the loss column now? Beautiful.

Heat won't be winning anything in the playoffs until Spoelstra is fired.

Butler's a 10-11 PER guy. Very meh. If this means he'll start over Bogans, I guess it would be alright.

How long until the Heat get that Wade should be taking the last shot? He's a clutch player that has proven he can hit the big shot at the end, whereas LeBron's resume includes many more misses that hits in that spot.

For the Knicks to shoot 39 percent, have 16 turnovers, not sniff 100 points, and still win at Miami....I can't decide if that's a good sign for them or a horrible one for the Heat. The Heat have had some issues with even just decent teams if one of the big three isn't hitting shots, and tonight Wade was 5 for 15 for 12 points.

Kevin Love eats small children. Oh, and I underestimated 'Melo and the impact he would have. Screw depth. Superstars are what win you titles in the NBA. I want no part of the Knicks in the first round.

You mean like just about every other player in the NBA?

I want the 2nd seed, because that means we'll get either the Heat or Knicks in the second round.

The craziest scenario would be Bulls vs. Knicks in first and that'll be Immovable Object vs. Unstoppable Force.

Bulls vs. Heat in second round would be an absolute war because LeBron or Rose is getting that MVP and the other is gonna be pissed.

Bulls just need to worry about winning games, because no matter what seed they have potentially tough match ups. If I were the Bulls the only seed Id be thinking about is the 1 seed.
