The amount of money the Tigers have thrown at VMart and Benoit is great for the Sox and the rest of the usually thrifty AL Central. The only downside is that this may have an effect on what AJ signs for, although I doubt it.

I was thinking the same thing. Heck Quentin might have 10 steals next year.

I have no problem with this signing, especially if reports are true and they're going to use him primarily as a DH. A good chunk of his value was positional, and if he's DHing, there isn't much room left for Dunn.

 

Also, for what it's worth, Martinez has a career .241/.318/.405 line in 116 AB's as a DH (small sample size, I know) so it's possible he's one of those types that struggles when he's not playing defense.

The Sox have offers out to bats on the free agent market, but certainly not Victor Martinez. If there was an offer of this size out to a slugger, which I have no idea of offer size, I can say with almost 100% certainty its not VMART.

 

I hate how one "source" names us and then 100 more run with it like its fact. I wish someone would fact check one of these days.

Somebody was talking a week or so ago about how offering AJ arbitration makes him less attractive to other teams because of the draft pick loss, and that we might not offer arb out of respect for him, giving him a better chance to land on a new club. With the kind of money being thrown at Buck and VMart I think we should definitely offer AJ arb now, PK as well. Apparently the price of catchers has gone up considerably, so even though they are nice guys, too bad, it's a business.

The Tigers really like Alex Avila who is one of the better young catching prospects in the game. In fact, his father is the Tigers' assistant GM. I really don't think V-Mart will be catching substantially going forward.

That offer is bogus. No way vmart wouldn't have accepted 3/48 over 4/50 to teams with essentially the same chance of contending and offer identical roles.

Martinez likely will see a significant number of at-bats as Detroit’s designated hitter. With Miguel Cabrera ensconced at first base, there is no room for Dunn on this team.

Everything I've heard, and I see what you might be implying, is that Dunn is the primary target of the Sox this offseason.

I'll say it again and again, when was the last time the Sox actually signed a top-tier free agent? They don't get involved in a bidding wars in free agency. I refuse to believe we will be a top contender for any of the big boys except Konerko since he is one of own. The Sox MO is try to find free agent bargains, re-sign their own guys and trade for proven talent. They just don't do the big-time free agency thing, which in some respects is good because then you don't become the Cubs and get stuck with horrendous contracts.

This is such a silly factoid. It implies that the Sox don't go after high priced free agents, which they do. (Remember offering Torii Hunter $75 million?) It also ignores that they have brought in plenty of high priced contracts from other teams (Peavy and Rios being the two most recent), and they also give big contracts internally. (Buehrle and Konerko being the two big ones recently.

 

Basically it means the Sox won't over pay in free agency. At the end of the day, they will just wait a year or two on the same player, but with a shorter term contract. It really is a smarter idea if you think about it

Except you're taking a chance on an older player who probably is starting to breakdown and you're pissing off the White Sox fanbase who believes we should never have gone after the guy as he's past his prime. It's only a good idea when you have great talent in your farm system.

Manny and Griffey (the 08 trade) were deadline deals for expiring contracts. Alomar was a FA the first time and an expiring contract the second time. Thome was the only real relevant example, and I don't think there is much of an argument that we got our moneys worth out of him.
