I am not surprised by this in the least. This and Buehrle re-signing are the two things I was quite sure about at the end of the season.

I'd guess that this move does increase the chances he's moved...but that moves Santiago into the pen as a 2nd lefty, and Reed is still barely making it. No room for Axelrod, no room for Stewart, no room for Infante, unless they outpitch Reed in ST.

 

I'm sure Santiago can handle the duties of a second lefty. I expect much more out of him in the future, but that seems like a very basic duty that I'm quite sure he'll succeed at.

I think we'll see it in 2013. Maybe they feel they have to strike while the iron is hot. The Yankees and Red Sox have pitching issues that they aren't going to be able to fix this offseason. If you want to win the AL, you have to do it when the two powers are down.

Problem with that is the two powers in the AL currently are not the Yankees and Red Sox. The Rays and Rangers are. And Detroit is still a lot better than us with money to spend this offseason.

Frasor, Crain, Ohman, Thornton could net some nice returns at the trade deadline if we're out of it.

You should know better than to count things as firm before they actually are. The Rangers are likely to lose CJ this offseason, that will leave them more reliant on Harrison and other youth in their rotation, which is always a risk. Then there's Cruz and Hamilton staying healthy. And like it or not, Verlander probably just showed you what a "Peak season" looks like...and they had other very helpful things like great years from Avila and Peralta.

I thought the Rangers were toast after losing Lee. That obviously wasn't the case. They've got money and a strong farm. They get the benefit of the doubt as far as I'm concerned. So you're saying Verlander is going to fall off or something? Even if '11 was his "peak" year, the guy has been god-like for a while now.

There is a huge difference between the 1.15 WHIP/3.45 ERA he put up in 2009/2010 and the 0.92 WHIP/2.40 ERA he put up in 2011.

Good point. It could be that the White Sox wanted some veteran arm like him there, but plan on moving somebody else then - I just don't see the White Sox, given that they will be cutting back on payroll, not moving 1-2 arms out of that pen.

 

Then again, I think Frasor only has the 1 year deal so maybe that makes him somewhat attractive rather than signing a middle reliever to a 3 year deal on the market.

I think they do. There was a reason he was one of the first guys up this year. You have Ohman to be the first loogy out of the pen and Santiago the second and long man from the left side.

 

I firmly believe that almost every player on next years team is already in our system or on our roster.

He probably won't. That wasn't my point. '09 Justin Verlander is still pretty much a top 3 pitcher in the AL.
