1. James Shields

2. Zack Greinke

3. Anyone other than Axelrod

i would prefer shields over greinke. its going to take a lot to get either and we would have shields for another two years at an affordable contract. greinke would most likely just be a rental considering he will get more than 5 year$$ and the sox wouldnt commit for that long(esp. with whats happend to danks after getting 5 yrs) i saw on mlbrumors that a scout thinks shields is fustrated and could use a change of scenery. he was great last year and pitches in the toughest division. with grienke, theres also the whole pressure/pitching on the road/large market thing to worry about as well

I don't see how the Sox could get Greinke without giving up Viciedo.

Not without getting very creative and incl. big leagues. RT @ErikPerez08: @Kevin_Goldstein Do the ChiSox have the pieces to acquire Grienke?

Is Greinke a free agent after this season?

I would usually agree with you but times are changing. Greinke will be a rental and without the chance for teams to get a draft pick for him, I have to believe that the offers will be reasonable. Texas has the deepest farm system involved and I don't think they would even consider Profar or Olt without an extension.

yea so he would be a rental

According to Cot's, Shields has two team options left, $9m for 2013, $12m for 2014.

I'd trade Viciedo and pieces for him, then go out and find a mediocre LF on the cheap.

marty already gave a suggestion ^_^

If we can resign him I'd give up Q, Jones, and Mitchell maybe even Castro/Hernandez if it takes that much

If we trade Viciedo for Greinke. Make another deal with MN for Willingham.

Milwaukee would be crazy to do this.

If the Sox were to go after Greinke, I'd hope they wouldn't offer a ton with him being only a rental. I would think there's no way the Sox could afford to re-sign him.

We do have Peavy, AJ and Floyd money coming off the books.

The White Sox, as CBSSports.com colleague Jon Heyman wrote today, have prioritized starting pitching in trade talks this week, with Zack Greinke the top target.

#WhiteSox are expected to make a big offer for Zack Greinke, source says.

Looks like Greinke is KW #1 choice.

True, but I thought I remember seeing that he'd be expected to make $20+ million a year. It would be nice, though.

Could AJ and Greinke play nice?

KW is absolutely doing the right thing here. Greinke is a difference maker.

what happend between the two?

For starters, they are from rival schools in Florida. That may be the extent of it; I'm not sure.

i don't feel like we have what it takes to get greinke, but you might as well get involved if for no other reason than to drive up the price.

We'd have to give up way too much to get Greinke, unless picking up his salary and some minor league prospects were enough. No way does Kenny get rid of Dayan IMO

Marty34 coming into 2013 when the Sox don't make the playoffs...because their offense goes into the "Tanks" when Juan Pierre puts up a .597 OPS replacing Viciedo.

"KW should be fired for giving up Viciedo, Mitchell and Jones for Greinke. We didn't re-sign him and now this team's at least 3-4 years from being able to compete again. We won't ever draw 2,000,000 fans again, and customers at Applebee's in Lawrence will forget Ozzie or the White Sox even existed by 2015."

:hawk:

Notice not even Marty's saying we should sign Greinke for $120-140 million over 6 years. He now just thinks we should "rent" him for the next 2 1/2 months.

I wanted Greinke way back when he was with KC, but I do not see how we can outbid some of the other teams for his services.

I think Shields makes more sense than Greinke, and that Tampa might have more use for a corner outfielder like Viciedo. The Brewers have absolutely no need for Tank.

I want nothing to do with Greinke (for the price it will take). His struggles on the road in the NL the last two years raise some red flags to me.

Okay, then who are we going to play in LF if we did trade him?

Dan Johnson? Pierre?

I can see Williams giving up Mitchell and Jones (if Crain is going to be healthy), but not Viciedo.

And Shields' contract is pretty similar to Gavin Floyd's ($9.5 million for 2013) so it's not like we're getting anything resembling a cheap pitcher. Tampa Bay really can't afford to keep pitchers like Shields on their roster with their attendance issues anyway.

Under no circumstances would I deal Viciedo for Shields. There have to be other options. Shields isn't a #1 guy in the true sense of it. Good/solid, but not great.
