Kyle Long is legit. Athletic and strong with a mean streak. Perfect pulling guard that can pass protect.

Which really is what this team, and especially the offense, needs the most. You can get play nasty without being a playing dirty. Play with an edge.

And yet, he probably could've been had in the 3rd round. No matter how good Long looks, you do not draft any guard in the 1st round of an NFL draft.

Honestly, kind of true, however getting Mills later on REALLY makes it look ok. In today's NFL I really think the athleticism of your guards dictates what you can do in your offense. They are underrated.

Yes, I'm kind of a homer even though he basically left in shame, but why isnt Pryor Oakland's starting QB? Their O Line is horrible and he is lethal in space.

From everything reported, that is a load of crap. He was going to go in the 1st round or at least that is what was reported following the draft.

He will be the starter at some point. He looked good.

Im not sure if he would have gone in the first but he definitely would have been gone in the 2nd.

Yeah, I remember reading Green Bay would have taken him.

Plus, Long doesn't project as a guard, he projects as a tackle, many think a left tackle.

He wasn't gonna be there in the third round

There were 4 guards taken in the 1st round this year...3 Before the Bears drafted. No chance they could have even got him in the 2nd let alone the 3rd.

It would have been nice if they traded down a few spots to pick up another pick but in hindsight the draft looks real good regardless.

Bears OL is gonna be working from the inside out, good guard play is a key to that, Long was absolutely the right pick and at the right time.

Stories after the graft had the packers and one other team ready to take him in the first round. Guys like Alan Faneca did well being drafted in the first. Besides in 2 years he will be the left tackle. He is only at guard to learn how to play O line.

How come everyone has it as a conclusion Long will be a tackle. I'd rather him be a dominant guard than a good tackle and with his athleticism I think he could arguably be the top guard in the NFL down the line. He obviously has the talent to be a tackle but not necessarily be as dominant.

Every talent evaluator on the score and espn1000 says he projects as a left tackle because of his size and athleticism. And they project him to be dominant because of his attitude.

It's all projections though, he could very well end up staying at guard

Either way, there has been a run on offensive line in the first round each of the last couple years including both tackles and guards. Tackles go first but guards have been steadily marching into the latter half of the first round.

I tend to agree with you. With Kromer and his OL operating from the inside out and putting more emphasis on guard play I'm cool with leaving him right where he is.

Almost anyone who goes in the late first round is going to have some teams that believe they're really more like third rounders. Heck, even guys that go higher will have that, especially QBs

I posted this over on talkbears in reference to the fact that Fendi Onobun wasn't apart of the first rounds of cuts and I'd like to get some more thoughts....

This might be a silly, out there, potential dumb comment that at the same time could be a somewhat innovative thought so bear with me(pun intended)....

Is it possible that the thought process behind keeping Fendi is using him as a decoy of sorts? When you think about a guy with his size(6'6") and speed(4.4 40) is just having him out there stretching out the middle of the defense worth having on the team? Just having him out there will demand attention right? Teams aren't just going to let him run free deep down the field.

It's certainly an out there thought but if I expected that thought from someone it'd be a guy like Trestman.

I would be ready to concede you're onto something here, but... Kellen Davis. 6'7", athletic, totally f***ing useless.

Yea, nobody is going to respect Onobun in the middle of the field if he doesn't start catching balls. And he has dropped some really well placed passes this preseason

The throw he had from Cutler wasn't the best placed, but there was NOBODY around him for like 5 yards and all he had to do was turn around and adjust. He got both hands on it and it fell. Marshall does this sometimes but he's Marshall, his next play will be a spectacular one-handed catch over a 6'2" corner while he was double covered for 16 yards.

But being tall and athletic never really translated into anything. He had some flashes, but even calling him "wildly inconsistent" is being too generous.

Wite, what the hell is a Jeff Tuel?

Something that you use in order to remove all hope of a winning football season before it starts. You can find it at Home Depot in the Snap-on Tool aisle
