Another good post. All interesting possibilities IMO. Would Floyd and Tom Gorzelanny agree to be relievers however?

Tom Gorzelanny is already a reliever for the Brewers and is a free agent as is Floyd and Gregerson. Floyd would probably do anything to keep collecting an MLB check considering he's lost so much time to injuries as a starter.

I like it. Some decent names to start rebuilding the putrid bullpen.

Gavin Floyd coming back from a fractured elbow could be converted to a reliever. Tom Gorzelanny will be available as will Luke Gregerson.

Gregerson's going to be too expensive for another "rebuilding" year.

I don't think we're ready to pay top market value for relievers like him, Miller, and some of the closers out there on the FA market.

Why can't the Sox spend? That is the question. If they want to have a second team in Chicago compete they need to have a large payroll.

you know I agree with you, except for 1 thing. there is always options, esp with salary spending

I do not know any inside info, but if the sox identify a need and can not fill it with what is avail

through trades, waiver pickup, I truly think they will go the free agent route to fill it. again if

the free agents is / or will fill the need.

miller would be a great pick up, esp if he comes without a QO.

I don't think we know that this is going to be a "rebuilding" year. The Sox could easily improve by another 10 games next year and that puts them right in the middle of contention.

Also importantly, looking at the Tigers, they could be looking at a fair amount of slippage. If they lose Scherzer, they really can't replace him. Age may well be catching up with guys like Miguel and Verlander. Torii Hunter is a free agent.

The Royals will lose Shields too. It will take some sleight of hand but the Sox are closer than people think.

I think the Tigers have another year or two, but who knows if age and weight are catching up to Miggy or if he's been banged up. Victor Martinez is not going to do this again and he may leave for greener pastures anyways. JD Martinez has been a revelation for them, but how likely is he to even come close to repeating the year he's had? There are a lot of question marks for them moving forward, you're correct.

Still, I don't even worry about that. Depending on the moves made, I don't think it's unreasonable for the Sox to be a team projected to win 85 games next year prior to the season and at that level, it's only 4 or 5 breaks over the course of a year that can push you up to 90 wins.

A bullpen that could hold leads and I think we're +10 games over this season.

And add back the 30 games that Robin has lost us this year... This is a 110 win team, easy.

The Tigers are the team to beat in the AL Central as of today, and unless a crazy off season happens, in 2015 as well. But that gap is narrowing more and more each year.

Plus all the players who had DL time, so they were really a 120 win team.

Add in some lineup protection for Jose Abreu, and all his intentional walks would have been homers. This is a 130-140 win team if you add Victor Martinez.

Not to mention if Nate Jones didn't get hurt, he probably would have had at least 60 saves, and had an ERA around 0.00. Lindstrom could have been the set up man, and probably would have made the rest of the set up men in baseball pale in comparison.

I am thinking 145-17 or 150-12.

Even though I am not ready to concede the 2014 season yet I may have a major announcement on Sunday

I was being serious in my comment... :P

I know you were, but at the same time I couldn't resist the 30 games thing.

My thoughts on the 2014 pen consist of a barge being set afire and afloat

Well then.....

Nate Jones said he feels great after surgery & that his back and hip also feel good. He hopes to begin throwing the week before Thanksgiving

....So much for him being out all/most of next year??

No idea how the recovery on that works but it'll be interesting to see what the velocity is like.

After doing some research I guess I'm overreacting here. Read that you start light throwing 4 months after your surgery. November would be 4 moths after his late July surgery.

"Real" throwing doesn't start till 9-12 months.

So ya, that tweet is nothin. Disregard.
