Did anyone else enjoy seeing Billy Beane's trade deadline strategy go up in smoke last night, at the hands of the lowly Kansas City Royals? I'm talking about the Jon Lester trade, which Beane must have thought was his ticket to the NLDS should the Angels somehow pass his A's and he be forced into a one-game wild card game to get in!!

The bad trade he made was for Shark -

You don't give up a top 5 prospect for 2 years of a number 2 starter.

Otherwise, he was trying to win.

He's also going to be just 29 and has a career slugging percentage of .449. Wanting to buy low on him is not a bad idea.

Going multiple years is probably not the best idea though.

29 and his body type means maybe 2-3 more productive years.

If Butler hit left handed, I could see taking a flyer but he doesn't. If the Sox end up with a right handed bat backing up Abreu, it should be a guy like Kemp and not Butler. Not that I'm assuming the Dodgers will be interested in trading Kemp, its probable they would prefer to move Crawford or Ethier. I have confidence in Hahn's creativity to do better than Butler.

Exactly!!

Sorry for those who love Beane. Kenny Williams doesn't get nearly the same adoration but he has a World Series ring. Okay, the Sox have more money to spend. But still. Beane isn't the only smart GM in baseball.

It's funny how one great 12-game stretch overrides bad underachieving 162-game seasons. And vice versa for Billy Beane. Overachieving full seasons get forgotten because of one inning or one game in October.

Butler is trash. Christ, what the hell is wrong with some of you guys?

If Butler angers you so, and Sox don't acquire him, then put our own version of Butler, Viciedo at DH and get a new leftfielder, Markaikis. Easily solved there. Viciedo hit eight more homers than Billy.

Butler actually would be an OK gamble cause he's going to come cheap and you might get him to sign for 2-3 years like Kepp did. If you want another plodder, base clogger who will hit into a ton of DPs though, don't acquire him. Hahn knows what he'd be getting.

So let Viciedo DH add Markaikis to play left.

p.s. Billy Beane got OWNED on the Lester deal. The A's sucked after the trade. Lester didn'tlead them to postseason greatness. Bye bye Billy Ball. You and Sabes lose.

LOL. Again, the Red Sox 3 World Championships disagree with the idea that "sabes" lose, especially when EVERY team uses some form of sabermetrics in today's game.

You approve of the Cespedes trade and what it did to the A's?

It was a worthwhile risk. Cespedes has a lot of power but he also has a lot of swing and miss ability. He's a decent player, but not a great, franchise changing player. Beane didn't think he'd be able to retain Cespedes following next season, so he went and got something for him.

Not to mention the two the Cardinals have won using it.

I've never heard of the term "Sabes" before Greg decided to use it.

Please name me one person who has suggested this.

Also, Kenny Williams is no longer a general manager but I have absolutely no qualms with Rick Hahn holding that position either.

Which other baseball GM has had a major motion picture made about him, starring Brad Pitt, no less!

He did not have a major motion picture made about him. There was a major motion picture that was made about the book Moneyball, which was written by Michael Lewis as he documented the Oakland Athletics' season and organizational philosophy (which was fluffed to no end). Beane did do something ground-breaking and radical when he came into the job in Oakland, and now every team in the majors is doing it. It doesn't mean he's the only smart GM in the game.

WTF difference does that make?

Regardless of whether or not you agree with the approach, the reason Beane was set to film was that he was among the leaders in doing something unique and difficult - he changed the way front offices looked at the value equation. Hell, more specifically, what he did was actually make prolific use of a value equation at all. He (and a few others) changed the game. He may not be a wonderkind or superhero, but then no one here is saying he was either. Except the straw man you keep pointing to.

I would agree Bill James is a superhero, not Billy Beane.

Not really....drafting/player development young pitching in droves and the best catcher in the game when healthy. Cardinals' way 100+page instructional system integrated at every level etc.

Luhnow was part of that...but mozeliaks more of a traditional baseball guy. Combination of both aspects.

And the m's pitching just ran out of gas down the stretch.

LOL. I assume the 12 game stretch you are referring to is the 2005 postseason? The Sox had the best record in baseball and lead wire to wire. To say they overachieved or to cherry pick the playoff run like they were the '03 lucky-ass Marlins is insane. Ridiculous post. They ruled baseball that entire season from April 1 to the Uribe throw to Konerko on October 26th. Time and revisionist history doesn't erase that fact.
