Not if Castro is performing like this. It actually would make us worse.

well i will give way to you and all on this point.

i really don't follow the northsiders and i am looking at the only the stats for the last 2 yrs, i am way over my head on this stats that you use.

the problem for me, is not knowing those advance stats.

but for me, getting rid of danks and his salary vs who can help now and in the future at SS does that for me.

it is a win - win situation.

Excluding this year's salaries. Danks is owed 15.75M on the remainder of his contract while Castro is owed 40M+. I just prefer the Sox to have that financial freedom for future teams.

Exactly. Castro's defense and lack of hitting this year does absolutely nothing to inspire me to trade for him.

i understand what you and Balta are saying, but outside our present SS and who is at SS in the minors, Anderson being at least 2 more yr of development time, i was thinking, wouldn't he be a good replacement?

Use the simple ones. Castro has a .658 OPS this year. Castro had a .631 OPS in 2013. Those numbers are really bad unless a guy is a plus defender which Castro is not. His OPS in 2014 was .777 which is a really solid number in this league even if he's not a great fielder, but 2 of the last 3 seasons he's been really rotten with the bat.

I guess my point of view is their contract lengths. I would rather have Danks for the next 1.5 years than Castro for the next 4.5 years. I just do not trust Castro's defense and his bat has not been very good this year either. Castro is just too lackadaisical on defense. IMHO, I pass on him.

We have that now. It would be another guy who has to adjust the AL pitching.

If he wasn't such a bonehead on defense, yes he would be a good replacement. Castro has always had that problem and shows no signs of improvement. Sometimes he just looks like he is mentally somewhere else. Perhaps a tropical island in the sun? :P

I do see your point though about the future at SS.

Anyone read the Sullivan column on Castro and Ventura? I didn't know Sveum got fired in part because of his "tough love" act with Castro. Sully wrote Maddon uses a pat on the back approach, and seems to be getting the same results.

They say the guy wants to win and be really good. It appears despite a ton of talent, (and he at least was ahead of Pete Rose in hits at his age earlier this year) he either doesn't have it in him or he has to grow up.

I don't know if his contract is bargain enough to consider him a huge piece of a trade at this point.

Yup. How many times have us Sox fans complained about players defensively having their heads up their asses? Now we want to add another? Lol.

Good point on the adjustment to AL pitching.

thanks i understand that now.... it is kinda of simple.... jeez.

but how bad is he defensively??

a very good point there.

If all we do is use fWAR at its most basic, his contract started in 2013. 2013-2015 he's been paid $16.8 million and unless he improves upon this season's early start, he will have been worth about 2fWAR. In other words, based on what he's done during this contract so far...he's actually been slightly overpaid.

If we were sitting in a position where we were desperate for a SS to make a competitive run immediately I'd take the gamble on absorbing that contract and probably even give up something non-terrible for it. However, there's an equal chance that he keeps this performance level up and becomes even more overpaid as his contract increases.

I just don't think I'd do it with where this White Sox team sits. It wouldn't outrage me, it might be a worthy gamble to take, but it's definitely a gamble.

Without going too far into advanced stats, his range is below average and he commits an above average number of errors per year. He's not terrible but he's below average.

excellent point and i would too. but in this case, no thanks

If we picked up Stalin Castro in a deal for John Danks for some unforseen miracle, we wouldn't keep him. He'd be dealt to another team who actually needs a SS, and we'd reload prospects.

The biggest myth is that Castro is signed to some great contract.

$50+million owed is an albatross.

Sox should be nowhere near Castro.

What they should be doing is working on Alexei trades, because teams could still use him (like the Mets).

Never do I want Starlin Castro on the Sox.

So for some reason if this happened, yes, Starlin gets flipped.

Sox have guys who can field the SS position. That's not what they need to trade for. 3B or OF. Or just good prospects. Catcher in December.

The only myth here is that Castro is owed 50+ million dollars.

Bout $45 million if you prorate this season and assume option isn't picked up.

Honestly, I wouldn't even trade Danks for Castro.

Wait, what? Are you serious?

if you read through the subsequent posts at least it's a more muddled case than it appears at first glance.

THE CUBS AND WHITE SOX ARE NOT TRADING WITH EACH OTHER!!!!!!!

I don't think the teams are on bad terms or anything like that, but you won't see a deal that involves Chris Sale and/or Starlin Castro for sure.

I don't think so either. They typically don't trade with each other though for whatever reason.

Whenever I brought up the possibility of the Sox trading Q, it seemed like people wanted burn me to the stake, but I digress.

Anyway, I was thinking about the Nats as a trade partner for Q at least during the offseason. Both Jordan Zimmermann and Doug Fister are free agents after the season. I think they both sign elsewhere, so that leaves them with two holes in their rotation. They are going to be looking for quality arms as they see themselves as contenders. The only starters that they have under contract are Scherzer, China Doll and Gio Gonzalez.

So I ask this, would you trade Q to the Nationals in exchange for Lucas Giolito and change (Your pick of lower level prospects, comp picks, international bonus slots and/or cash)?

I know I would. Giolito gives you a monster arm and the more comp picks you have the more talent you can add to the system through the draft.
