Robertson Claimed by Yankees, pulled back by WS

Featured Replies

translation: Yankees aren't offering enough.

Right, but "enough" is a higher amount if the Sox believe they are contending within the next couple years than if they don't. Put Robertson and his contract on a team like the Marlins, Phillies or Rockies and "enough" is a lot less than if he's on the Sox.

Take LaRoche and Danks and you can have him

Take LaRoche and Danks and you can have him

Robertson is not going anywhere IMO., However, Danks and Laroche could be. Might not be at waiver deadline but this off season is a strong possibility.

The Yankees already have a strong pen. They have no incentive to make this work. It was to block the Jays and that's it.

LaRoche would strictly be a bad contract swap. Danks has rebuilt a small amount of value this season, but they wouldn't get much for him. I think EJ is more likely to get traded.

Yankees Claim David Robertson On Revocable Waivers; Trade Unlikely

By Steve Adams [August 31, 2015 at 11:50am CDT] from MLB Trade Rumors

11:50am: Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports hears from a source that part of the Yankees’ motivation in making the claim was indeed to prevent the Blue Jays from having an opportunity to acquire Robertson (Twitter link).

8:32am: The Yankees have claimed closer David Robertson from the White Sox on revocable waivers, reports Jon Heyman of CBS Sports, but a trade between the two sides is seen as unlikely. To this point, according to Heyman, there’s little indication of a deal in the works, and as of late Saturday night there hadn’t even been legitimate discussions between Chicago and New York. It seems probable that the White Sox will elect to pull their closer back off waivers.

Robertson, 30, has spent his entire career with the Yankees aside from this season. He departed as a free agent following the 2014 campaign, electing to sign a sizable four-year, $46MM contract with the Sox. (The Yankees, meanwhile, made their own significant commitment to lefty Andrew Miller: four years, $36MM.)

It’s still far too early to judge that hefty investment from the White Sox, but the early returns have been outstanding. Robertson has a 2.60 ERA with 12.2 K/9, 1.9 BB/9 (a career-best rate) a 38.3 percent ground-ball rate and 27 saves in 52 innings with the Sox. That ERA would likely be even better were it not for the fact that White Sox rate as one of the worst defensive clubs in all of baseball. SIERA, FIP and xFIP, for instance, all peg Robertson between 1.89 and 2.17 — significantly better than his still-impressive 2.60 ERA.

Robertson is earning $10MM in 2015 and has about $1.97MM remaining on his current salary, plus an additional $36MM through the 2018 season. The Yankees will have until 2:00 ET to work out a trade, per Heyman, indicating that the actual claim of Robertson was made on Saturday afternoon. It’s possible, though, that the Yankees made the claim not so much expecting a deal but more to prevent the division-leading Blue Jays from having an opportunity to add to their bullpen.

Even if that were the case, it wouldn’t mean the Yankees aren’t interested in a reunion. They pursued bullpen help in late July, and Robertson would mark at least the third elite reliever that the Yankees have attempted to acquire to pair with their already dominant late-inning duo of Miller and Dellin Betances. GM Brian Cashman reportedly showed strong interest in both Craig Kimbrel and Aroldis Chapman prior to the non-waiver trade deadline last month.

Though his specific trade probably won’t come to fruition, it’s likely that we’ll see a few swaps made prior to midnight. Players acquired on Sept. 1 or later are ineligible for their new team’s postseason roster, meaning that any last-minute trades that contenders wish to make in order to upgrade their potential playoff rosters will need to be completed in the next 14.5 hours.

Trading Danks will be difficult since he has trade restrictions in his contract.

Robertson, Laroche and Soto for JR Murphy

So they have 5 minutes to do something or it's just a block right?

Seems that way, yes.

The White Sox could in theory put him on irrevocable waivers and try again, but they're not going to do that.

Yeah I agree. If there was value coming back it could make sense to trade Robo, but his contract isn't a bad one on this team IMO.

I am sure it was just the Yankees blocking the Jays. No reason for the Sox to deal him now to just one bidder. If they actually wanted to trade him, do it in the off-season to a larger market.

It's the Sox season of inactivity so I don't expect anything to happen however... .

1) The Sox might secretly admit they blew it not getting anything for Shark and try to save a little face getting something for Robertson .

2) Having seen what Jones can do even though he's a good candidate to be reinjured , they might just have to take that chance.

3) The Yankees have seen how the Jays made up a lot of ground and now might be considered the favorites in the AL. Although the Yanks BP is good, it is not elite and with their starting pitching being so so the BP if upgraded give the Yanks a much better shot at a title.

4) Yankees have some interesting prospects . At catcher their is Sanchez who's work ethic and defensive skills are both highly questionable . Has a powerful bat but never sure where his head is at. John Ryan Murphy ( the current Yankees backup catcher ) doesn't have the upside of Sanchez especially when its power we're talking about) but he's hit for decent average and had a positive WAR for 2 seasons with the Yanks in limited AB's. Both are RH.

Luis Severino RH P tearing up the minors. Yanks #1 prospect no chance for him.

Jorge Mateo if the Yanks offer him the Sox should jump at the chance . RH SS speed to burn . Still rough with the glove much like Tim Anderson but has a good hit tool and its been coming quickly. Still just 20 ,he's at A+ now.

Other position players to look up Aaron Judge (OF), Greg Bird (1b), Eric Jagielo (3b).

Robertson has trade value especially to the Yanks since they know him well. To those suggesting a salary dump giving JR up for nothing , not a chance in hell.

I'd say 60/40 chance nothing happens but the Yankees want a quality reliever bad.

Robertson is no longer on waivers.

Took me so long to make my previous post that the deadline came and went :P No trade. Figures. Yanks just blocking Jays. Sox continue to do nothing.

Not really. Not like he needed to be a salary dump move. Of all the free agents brought in last season, he's the only one that fulfill his actual contract.

This is a good sign that money is not a concern and the future is now.

Having a high paid closer on a 75 win team seems pointless, I was hoping maybe he could bring back some talent at other positions or maybe even free up money to spend elsewhere.

Yankees did not want or need him............pure block off Toronto. Hopefully we can return the favor to the Yankees very soon.

Well this was fun.

Well they're gonna need a very good closer (notice I didn't say elite, not sure there are any anymore) eventually so IMO they might as well keep him.
