There have been a lot of reports saying the O's will not go above 100 million for Cespedes. So I doubt it. Not to mention there was a report yesterday that they (the O's) haven't even offered a contract. So unless this market is really going to take a few more weeks to break, Cespedes may be off the board before Davis makes a decision.

I'm still not quite getting how Heyward was a "steal" at nearly $200 million and this guy is too risky for $100 million.

Here's a category the White Sox pitching staff overall was last in the AL, KC first. The Royals were better in whip, ERA, baa and ops.

 

Whether it's starters or relievers that are your comparative advantage, you still need solid defense and offensive balance.

 

And Complaining about starting pitching is irrelevant in the same way it will be in Yankees' games this season. If you have one of the top five bullpens in modern baseball history for two years running, why would you care if your starters go 6.5 vs. 5.25 innings on average?

You might be the first person I've seen to actually argue that the Royals' SP was better than the Sox SP. Your own link proves your argument wrong. First of all, you didn't adjust for only starting pitching, so the stats you show are for pitching overall, including relievers. Secondly, DIPS% shows how much your pitching benefited or was hurt by the defense. KC being first means their pitchers were helped more than any other team by defense, while the Sox being last means our pitchers were hurt the most. Sox SP were better in WHIP (1.30 vs. 1.37), ERA (4.12 vs. 4.34), BAA (.261 vs. .269), and OPS too (.739 vs. .755). There was pretty much nothing KC SP had on the Sox SP in 2015, except being the benefactors of great defense, it was a garbage rotation.

I don't think anyone thinks Heyward is a steal. I just don't know why some assume Cespedes will be the player he was during his walk year. This is a scenario we have seen played out time and time again. One reason I like Gordon more is I think the chances are better he doesn't have mediocre seasons even though he supposedly is older. But Cespedes had a couple of years in Oakland where he wasn't a guy you would want to give $120 million.

That article says the Orioles won't sign another big free agent if Davis leaves, so I'm not sure why you're assuming they'lo get Cespedes if he does.

It is the lack of teams willing to spend a lot of money that is holding the market up. The traditional big hitters are all gone now, and all that remains is the second tier of spenders that is by nature a lot more cautious.

 

Internally I think if we have seen one major difference that lets me know that Rick Hahn has a lot more control of things than people give him credit for it is that the moves the Sox are making are NOT impulsive. He has a price in mind for a particular deal, and he doesn't really seem motivated to leave that price. Look at how long the Frazier deal took to come together. Anyone really think Kenny would have held out that long? I don't. It feels to me that the same thing is going on with Cespedes/Gordon/Upton. Hahn has an amount and year for each player that is his ceiling, and he is going to do everything he can to get into that window. Realistically all Hahn has to is look around at who is competition is right now to see that there isn't any real urgency to overspend either. The market is coming back. Rick is doing the prudent thing by waiting it out. If worst comes to worst, he can always up his bid at the last minute if market conditions change.

Honestly I just want someone to sign so the other dominos start to fall. The past two weeks have been useless for me, all I do is check back on here and Twitter to see what's going on. For the sake of sanity I hope the market starts to move after this holiday weekend. I hope we end up with one of the three but really would just like a conclusion. This board needs it just as bad too I think.

The Heyward signing was thought to be the first domino, but I believe that the structure of his contract with the opt out slowed things down. These guys may be looking for a similar option...especially Upton because of his age.

 

Also, as someone else mentioned, there aren't a ton of teams lining up to get these guys. There are probably only a half dozen teams that are really serious about them.

 

I know we're all anxious for a signing, but it's looking more and more like we'll be waiting another week or so.

 

I just hope that when the dust settles, the Sox will have signed one of the big three.

Pretty sure everyone realizes the world doesn't revolve around baseball rumors but it's hard to focus on real life which is why I would love to get a conclusion to this thing. So my productivity can increase in the other facets of my life that matter

I don't think the opt out has really anything to do with slowing things down. Maybe for Upton's case but not the other 2. Or the second tier free agents.

There were big boys like the Cubs, Nationals and Angels in on Heyward, not so much on the others. It depresses their market. If a team offered any of them what was projected in November, they most likely would be signed right now.

How does one gain access to this life beyond baseball rumors that you speak of?

At this point, I think Gordon and the Sox were just using each other as leverage. Gordon using us for a higher KC offer, we using him for Cespedes to want to accept our offer.
