It's not an issue of caring... its an issue of mental toughness, discipline and accountability.

 

The team doesn't have the leadership in the front office, the managerial staff or from the players to consistently show what it takes.

This road trip to KC, NYM and Detroit is going to be huge.

 

The White Sox IMO wouldn't have released John Danks if they weren't off to such a great start and occupying first place. They would have muddled along like the last 3 years. It has been quite some time since the days of Bevington, Lamont and LaRussa being fired in the middle of a season.

 

That said, it just depends on how long this 4-11 "slump" continues. Obviously, we've let all three of our main opponents back into the AL Central race when the Tigers and Royals were on the verge of being buried.

 

They're going to be playing before large crowds in three very hostile environments. Yet, for whatever reason, the White Sox have tended to play fairly well on the road and inexplicably haven't defended the home field well at all, other than stretches of 2008, 2010 and somewhat in 2012.

 

Maybe they need that excitement and energy of being the underdog and being left for dead to get going again. For whatever reason, White Sox teams can't stand success very well when they are front-runners with higher expectations and manage to put themselves in a situation nearly every time where they have to battle back.

Has a first place team ever fired their manager during the season?

 

The only one that strikes me as close is Ned Yost in Milwaukee...but that was nearing the end of the season.

 

And "first place" by 1/2 game at the moment feels more like it will be 3-5 games back on June 28th after being up 6/7/8 games coming into the bottom of the 8th inning in Texas with an 11-6 lead.

Hahn's perfectly fine negotiating contract extensions and with the business/administrative side and will never do anything to embarrass the organization in terms of PR like KW, but talent evaluation? Not really his forte.

 

You can't give Hahn credit for Eaton and Abreu and then turn around and overlook 75% of the remaining moves that have backfired and put this organization more and more behind the 8 ball.

 

I'm not even sure you can applaud him for the Shark deal or Frazier if we don't get to the playoffs in the next two years...especially if everyone was wrong in their assessment of Trayce Thompson. Time will tell on that front. Holding on to that draft pick is turning out to be a critical error (see Bob Nightengale article at USA Today about Fowler) error as well. Being stubborn to show SOMETHING for the Shark deal isn't helping us when we really need it, at the MLB level, RIGHT NOW.

I think JR is the problem and until he passes I think the team will continue to get what we've had the last 10 years.

 

The new owner has to treat this team like a big market team and build a new stadium either in the suburbs or in a more accessible part of the downtown area.

 

My idea would be to create a man made island extension to Northerly Island to support a baseball stadium and have the batter's box facing west northwest right at the heart of the Chicago skyline. This stadium could utilize the same parking structures that the Bears do since there wouldn't be overlap with the sports seasons.

Hire the Chinese for that project (due to their "expertise" in the South China Sea)...they can do the high speed rail line too, haha, since they're theoretically working on the Vegas to LA line.

 

At least we have some "out of the box" thinking here tonight.

I think this comment is on the money. Just substitute Ventura and add Hahn, and this organization is trying to do things exactly as it did in 2005. Not being able to develop position players has really taken its toll, and even a complete dedication to that concept could take a good handful of years to get where it needs to be.

I think you got the Bevington part wrong. He was never fired in season he lasted until the end of the 97 year then was dumped. JR went to personally talk with Jimmy Leyland about the job who said no because of the resentment he felt towards the way the organization fired his friend Gene Lamont. Then Tony LaRussa was involved in negotiations and according to Nightengale then with the Sporting News had agreed on a handshake deal with JR. That supposedly was torpedoed because Scheuler was upset LaRussa wanted full authority on player moves for the major league roster. Somehow JR chose Schu over Tony when Schue gave him an ultimatum.

I wonder how quick the additional cost would pay for itself in attendance. You have to figure we could get an additional 5-10k attendance per game just given how great the location would be.

Why do we have to choose between a bad manager and an alcoholic. Hire a real manager. Heck, give Renteria a shot.

If Ozzie was the last manager on Earth I wouldn't want him. After the way he quit on the team, whined about a new contract right before the biggest series of the year against Detroit in August 2011 if I remember correctly plus how he embarrassed the organization.

 

No f***ing way.
