Of course. A team taking his contract would take on the entire contract, and the Sox would still get the money the Padres are paying them.

 

I think he means that the team would take on on what we owe and we re-direct the money the Padres give us to the team receiving Shields.

If you've followed him since he was drafted you'd know he struggles each time he moves up a level for a short time. This was to be expected.

The problem is there is no guarantee that pattern continues, and the Sox need him to produce now which makes the move a bit baffling.
