As it is, he has a ERA of 4 and a WHIP of 1.4 Is that development? What about the inability to develop anyone beyond Nate Jones in the pen? Or a #4 or #5 starter? What about not letting Junior Guerra pitch and then cutting him? Gonzales is 32 - he was not developed by Cooper. He stabilized Gonzalez into a solid #5. Throw a parade. The staff as a whole has been a little better than average at best, but mostly mediocre, for years. Cooper is a solid coach, but there is something to be said for some fresh thinking. Yes Gonzalez regained velocity which helped him return to form. His velocity was way down in spring training. Unless it was something mechanical it can't be attributed to Cooper. I'm laughing at this... how does one develop a #4 or 5 starter? I think Q had the ceiling of a 4 or 5 in many's eyes but turned out better than that. In short, there aren't many pitchers who are long term #4 or 5 starters, you either improve or get replaced. Putting that blame on Cooper is asinine. Seriously, are there any pitching coaches we could confidently assert would turn around Kanhle, Michael Ynoa, Jacob Turner, and the rest of the riff raff that was our pen in August and September? Other than expecting Rodon and Fulmer to perform instantly like Sale and Q, where has he failed? Isn't that just as much on the scouting/evaluation side of things, if not moreso?
