The fact that he becomes a FA in 4 seasons adds to the total. If they had regular control like the Sox had for Ramirez and Viciedo, the $ figure probably shoots up to what was being estimated. If this guy has to spend any time in the minors or isn't very good for a couple of years then becomes good, the $50 million estimate assuming 6 year control once someone hits the majors is correct. This is a crazy contract, but apparently something the A's have to make. Someone on twitter said Oakland couldn't afford big bats so they had to do this. I think the big bats don't want to go there, that's why they did this. We will see. I don't think there will be any in betweens with this signing. Beane is either going to be a genius or a fool.

And if he ends up being a good hitter, he will be a Yankee or Red Sox in two and a half years because of the opt out. I don't see how Beane wins this deal with Cespedes able to leave after four years.

Yeah, and look at the annual breakdown

susanslusser Susan Slusser

Cespedes will make $6.5 million this year, $8.5 mill in 2013 and $10.5 mill in each of the final two years, the Chronicle has learned.

If he can turn him into a boatload of prospects, maybe that works.

Am I the only one who thinks the Marlins should be investigated? Where the F did they get all this money?

It's justifiable because the addition of Ozzie itself guarantees 2 Championships over the course of his contract. If you knew for a fact that you had the winning numbers for the next powerball, you too would probably buy ridiculous things like a Yoenis Cespedes, or a small boat that fits into the pool of a large boat. I would buy something like Yellowstone National Park and then yell at people to get off my lawn.

They've had it per the Deadspin documents, they've been sitting on revenue sharing money. Also they have back loaded some of their FA deals. IIRC, the had to increase spending to starve off a MLBPA complaint.

With Ozzie going to Florida, Theo to the North Side, and the incredible talent of the Royals farm system, I think every World Series title til 2020 is spoken for.

Fascinating how this all came down with the opt out. Never even thought that was an option.

I can't fathom why the A's would do that either. Do the A's think they have a 4 year window? If not, then they're just blowing money on a guy so they can trade him.

Agreed, I bet Beane is already taking offers for him. This seemed like easy money for the Marlins.

His coming to Oakland might seem stranger still in light of his description as a five-tool center fielder, since the team's one major financial commitment this winter was to its veteran center fielder, Coco Crisp, for two years guaranteed at $13 million, with a 2014 club option for $7.5 million (with a $1 million buyout). Whatever you want to say about Crisp’s virtues, a large chunk of his value is tied up in his glove -- he won’t be an asset to a big league lineup playing regularly in a corner.
One other bit.
