I’m not counting on him…just listing him as one of four depth options for the #5 spot in the rotation.

The only true “headliners” we have are Carlos, Fauske, Hagen, & McDougal, so I’d consider all those guys as legit possibilities of being moved come August 1st. The Sox will also need to thin out the 40 man roster further, including guys who will need to be protected. I love me some Mason Adams, but he’s a primetime candidate to be traded for a SP. Bergolla also fits the billing, but harder to get fair value for him given his injury status. The same applies to Ky Bush and to a lesser extent Thorpe, who I think they’d like to hold onto for next year. I think Gabe Davis is far more likely to be moved than Oppor, who you’d be selling for pennies on the dollar. He’s the best pitching prospect available after the guys mentioned above and Sandlin, who is might be too important for depth purposes to trade. Pierre George & Matthew LaCombe could also be of interest as a secondary pieces as guys with big stuff but reliever profiles for now. Beyond that, I think Boston Smith, Colby Shelton, & Kyle Lodise all could get moved due to upper level redundancies. Mogollon fits the same billing, but serves as a younger alternate who provides more upside but less proximity.

Lots of Sox expats including Jake Burger, Tyler Alexander, Ben Peoples, and, the pride of Pedro Grifol, .300 hitter Nicky Lopez, who actually is hitting over .300.

Twitter/Reddit burned me to the stake for that tweet but that’s what I was trying to say. I guess I should’ve specified by saying backup catcher. I just can’t handle much more of Drew Romo. He’s not even good enough defensively to make up for his nonexistent bat.

Gavin Fien, drafted 2 spots after Carlson, was the main piece for Mackenzie Gore, a similar pitcher (Gore probably had somewhat better performance overall). They did throw in several other guys. Seemed like an overpay by Texas. Then I look at the Crochet trade. Crochet was an ace and he essentially netted us 2 Carlsons plus 2 other pieces. I would just think that Carlson should be the max for Detmers, who's really been a lackluster pitcher until this season. Also, I would try to win this division with a 6 man rotation; keep them fresh and Martin seems to do better with extra rest.

I agree. You don’t do something stupid, but you got to add a SP.

I definitely feel you. We’d almost certainty be selling low. I don’t like the idea either. Just think for a controllable SP it will likely cost him because Bonemer should be untouchable and you can’t trade the guys you just drafted. I guess maybe Fauske is another possibility, but not sure he’d have the same value.

It isn't and he wasn't. There are at least 14 better shortstops with better power on this team. Sox fans have been destroying this pick since he was drafted, then he did a Tim Elko impression for a month and he's suddenly a star? It fits a narrative but not necessarily the facts of reality. Gonzalez isn't Tatis or Semien. Even at the time of their respective trades, everyone knew how good those guys could be. Gonzalez though, he's just some guy. I think he'll be a pretty good regular 2.5 WAR kinda guy which was, IMO, the pick to make in that pretty bad draft. With hindsight, there are several better players we could've selected after him. Still not a terrible pick like some on this board made it out to be, but he's also...not really a difference maker and he certainly has no role on this team. I've been loling for a week reading that Gonzalez thread wondering why anyone actually cares all of a sudden. I think it relates to some notion that the Sox rarely have quadruple-a talent to call up and so now we're overvaluing our injury reserve, Zach Remillard type players (I miss Zach) and we forget that a proven path to sustained success is to consistently inject talent into the system at the lowest levels, even if it's risky and means...losing a couple more games at Charlotte. Getting a first round pick and slot $$ for 'some guy' is terrific value in any sport, particularly good value in a sport like baseball where you can't typically trade picks. Of course, this is one of those things where you can't actually make a judgement for several years, but I have been collecting Sox fan receipts since I started looking at this board, and there's enough evidence that Sox fans are typically wrong and overly emotional. I would be very interested in looking at a perspective on Gonzalez from someone who was as high as me on him when he was drafted. I liked him better when we didn't have a million guys playing his position who are better than him. I think there's a very good probability that the two guys we were able to draft by trading him will be better MLB players. Does Prosek get overslot value if we don't make the trade? Ignoring Thome's surname, he's a better raw talent than Gonzalez was. It's hard to think about the future, but replacing a bench player/guy who shuffles between AAA and MLB with two potential major talents is just what organizations should be doing even if it doesn't work out. It's the sort of thing that good organizations do. Another thing that good organizations do is make players like Jacob Gonzalez look like trade assets a couple of months after looking like they'd never make MLB. Anyway, let's reassess in two or three years. Somebody will inevitably necro this thread like they did with the Vargas one and it will be another lesson into the notion that SoxTalk posters have no clue what the f*** they're talking about.

I don’t think this guy has ever gotten anything right in the years he has cosplayed as an insider. It’s quite impressive that he hasn’t gotten a single thing right just out of sheer luck.

There's not a lot of people on the planet with the athletic ability to throw a baseball 95+ with control. If there was they wouldn't be getting the money they make. And agree completely that pitchers get injured a lot more this year for various reasons that experts have been discussing for several seasons which is why the adage "you can never have enough pitching" rings true. So when you come across pitching, good pitching you need to hang on to it regardless of cost especially if they are younger. And I've preached for years today you need six, maybe seven competent starters because someone is going to get hurt or slump. In 1983 the Sox had seven starting pitchers on the roster who won at least 10 games in a big league season. Man to have that depth today.

There really are no dominant teams in the AL. You have to get 1 more pitcher but can't break the bank. I would love detmers but can't overpay.

DeGrom can get roughed up and given his season history he's just about due. But with 13 days off he's probably going to be pretty sharp.
