Not back related. He took a nasty foul ball off his lower leg last night and was pulled. Sounded like he tried to tough it out today but the smart thing is to sit. This game doesn't mean much in the grand scheme and Acuna can fill a roll hopefully.

What exactly is going on with Colson and his back? Is this something that is going to get worse every year? A back issue of any kind is not good. Do we know exactly what the issue is?

I judge these by the "process" I guess is the term. Crochet was a budding ace: not quite there, but only because he didn't have a full season. In return, we got 2 top 50-60ish prospects and 2 other interesting players. Fair deal and it worked out great. The Vargas deal. Fedde was a top 10 WAR pitcher, but with a mediocre past and legitimate "career year" concerns. Kopech was an underachiever with great tools who had a great July and is the type of pitcher the Dodgers love. It was a bit tricky to figure out what fair value was. Vargas was an ex-ranked prospect; decliner or just someone who aged out a bit and the Dodgers had no room for? Worked out great but it felt like this was on the Dodgers terms. Cease trade was similar in process. But Thorpe was a soft tosser ceiling #3 and was a questionable main piece for Cease, who is a #2 and #1 at times. Felt like it was on the Padres terms. Overall, excellent talent evaluation by Getz & Co., But the negotiation aspects seem less solid.

Agree. Kath was overslot 1.8 million. Kelley got 3 million. A reminder that not all of these draft picks are going to become stars or even MLB players.

I actually would despise selling the farm for a reliever. Gross. If you are going to lobotomize the farm you need a controllable top end starting pitcher so much more.

Yeah, without the historic extra rookie ball team, most of these days stay in the Complex and play sims there against the other teams. Been like this for a few years now. Some guys will eventually plug into the holes of other teams, but most won't see action. We almost certainly won't see Thome and Prosek until next year. Roch will plug in somewhere. I expect we see the college pitchers log some innings here and there, while the college bats get used on an ad hoc basis, based on need.

Roch gets a couple weeks in Winston Salem then a month in Durham to close it? Hopefully rakes and looks ready for a promotion sometime next year.

This is great news for Teel. I thought it was an Achilles injury or even a strained calf. The fact that its an ankle, even if it is a high ankle, is much better news. I hope they are conservative with the timetable. Lower body injuries compound on themselves without significant rest.

As for what we saw from Thorpe's arsenal in MLB, the changeup was basically as advertised. Generated a nearly 40% whiff rate which is fantastic for any pitch, but especially a changeup and especially a changeup being thrown as often as it was. That's basically Devin Williams level of whiff-on-changeup and he was having to face batters multiple times a game. The rest of the mix was pretty suspect with the other offerings generating really, really low whiff rates and getting hit hard too often. Some of that was command and sequencing, some of it was surely inherent to the pitches he was throwing. He had started using his slider more right before the injury and that pitch was looking pretty useful for him. But that would be the big question mark for him — what does he use around the changeup, how much does he use his fastball, whether to use slider/cutter/sweeper as the glove side breaker, etc. Many guys never figure those things out, so it's tough to say whether he will or would have. Not to mention that many guys lose the shape on some of their pitches post-TJS so I'm very curious to get Statcast data on what he's throwing in 2026.

Burke was just on the score and they asked him who he thinks is the most amusing friendship in the clubhouse, and he said Schultz and Fedde are really good friends and it’s funny because Fedde is oldest and Schultz is youngest. He said when they are on road trips those two love to hit up card shops and collectible shops, do card openings and things like that

You'll have to ask Drew. His statement at that time indicated that his elbow was very sore after that excellent third-to-last start. Tried pitching through it the next two times through and it didn't work. Then bone spur surgery, then TJS coming back from the bone spur surgery. The bone spur was surely there to some extent before, but I don't know how much he felt it in the time that he was pitching adequately because I can't ask him. I doubt he faked the whole thing just to try to get Soxtalk off his back about two bad starts though.

Chill lol. They are at draft camp. They also don't generally send the prep picks to affiliated ball anyways. They go the instructional league route in draft year. I know you are aware of this because you like to bring it up with Billy Carlson every chance you can.

It's kinda hard to add a Lee type on March when you've got so much roster flux, but yea. He stinks. He's not good. Probably one of the worst defensive catchers in AAA.
