This isn't the time of year to make "long term" decisions anyway. Work those out in the offseason when you aren't "buying' per se and don't have a buyers premium. Sox have a lot of good players; but they aren't great. There's no one really outside of catcher to push out.

Detmers career summary: 2021: Tough, short rookie season 2022: Nice 25 start performance, peripherals a little mediocre but nothing to complain about. 129 innings 2023: Decent 28 start performance, peripherals somewhat consistent but the actual run scoring went the wrong direction 2024: Horrible, some signs of bad batted ball luck (FIP et al not as bad as 6+ ERA) but he made half a season of starts in AAA and got bombed there too 2025: Solid season out of the bullpen, although the numbers aren't great for a reliever. Fielding independent statistics continue to like his performance better than ERA does 2026: Nice season, quickly approaching all-time high in innings and again fielding independent statistics think he deserves better than his 4 ERA. Had a really bad stretch of starts recently but his most recent 3 were good. To me, I just have a hard time endorsing paying a real high price for this guy. The stuff is good, no doubt. But there's not that much of a track record of strong performance, his last reasonably good season as a starter before this one was in 2023 and even that was a year he posted a 4.48 ERA (4.13 FIP, 4.57 xERA, 4.14 SIERA for the sabermetricians at home). He's still young and there's not many injury issues in the past that I know of. His recent performance is more or less his best performance, although that's almost always true of players who get lots of attention as a top trade candidate — you are frequently buying high. This season, the metrics say he deserves better than the 4.03 ERA, although I also take note that he has rather consistently underperformed the metrics. Statcast says the defense behind Detmers has been 6 runs worse than average this season, so maybe that explains it all. But there's a lot of explaining you have to do about why this guy is not just worth having on your team, but worth paying a high price for. You get 2 more years after this with team control. Have to weigh what you expect happens with regard to a lockout here since that's half of your future control. Obviously, he'd a big upgrade for the White Sox. But if you think Bonemer is a top 25 prospect, then no way you trade him for this guy. IMO, of course

They desperately need some starters for the Rays series. That is going to be rough if Schultz and Fedde are pitching.

I think something might happen tonight

Schultz to the bullpen as he nears his innings limit?
With Schultz I think of Randy Johnson because they were both 6'10" LP. Randy has said that it took him years to figure it out, hopefully Schultz can put it together sooner.

What is katie Perry's bootyhole reporting?- Trade Ideas/Rumors/Proposals Thread
Given Teel’s inability to hit lefties, needing a platoon partner was always a strong possibility. It’s too bad Quero forgot how to hit LHP. The catching position went from a strength to a full blown disaster.- Trade Ideas/Rumors/Proposals Thread
Yeah, I don't disagree, but I also don't know if the Sox can count on Teel at C full-time. The injuries this year are REALLY alarming. You might need more of a legit catcher platoon, with Teel also getting time at 1B/DH when Murakami gets a break. If Rutschman doesn't cost too much I'd at least consider it.- Trade Ideas/Rumors/Proposals Thread
I don’t like idea of spending big on a catcher with control. Teel will be back next year and you’re going to want that DH spot for Murakami or Vargas if Roch comes up.- Trade Ideas/Rumors/Proposals Thread
i don’t hate the idea, depending on the cost. Also let’s all hit up some Orioles message boards and absolutely lowball the s%*# out of them.- ESPN Buster Olney: Sox need to trade for a catcher and starting pitcher. No surprise there.
Buster Olney of ESPN, ranks the Sox as the #2 MLB team behind the Cubs, that needs a trade deadline move the most. Nor surprisingly, he refers to a need for a catcher and one starting pitcher. As possible catchers to target, he refers to Kyle Stephenson and Jose Trevino of the Reds or Francisco Alvarez and Luis Torres of the Mets. He refers that Noah Schultz needs an upgrade as fifth starter. Hopefully Getz can pull the trigger on a good catcher. Sox cannot contend well with Quero/Romo duo. Detmers was BA’s #8 prospect in the 2020 draft. Didn’t officially pitch that year due to COVID. Went straight to AA in 2021 and dominated before being promoted to AAA and the majors for a brief cup of coffee. Ended up being BA’s #28 overall ranked prospect in 2022. So much better pedigree as a prospect. He strikes out a lot more guys than Quintana and has better velocity & stuff. He lacks the control that peak Quintana had though, although it’s improved a ton this year. Quintana also ate a ton more innings, but Reid is getting better there. They are both lefties but I wouldn’t consider them all that similar. Regarding the price, Quintana was traded right before prospect valuations changed significantly. And candidly, Hahn got very lucky a separate Epstein was willing to give up those pieces. He waited out for an offer for his price to be met after successful Sale & Eaton trades and I’m not sure any other team would have been willing to trade that level of prospect capital. Detmers will certainly cost less just given the current baseball operating environment.- Trade Ideas/Rumors/Proposals Thread
True - it’s a challenge managing development paths of pitchers while also trying to contend. I think one reason they want two starting pitchers is so they can back off potentially derailing Noah. He obviously isn’t there yet and we also know he hasn’t built up to a full starters workload. His last outing was one of his most promising to date but the hook he had shows the complete absence of trust they have in him due to the circumstances your describing.Today

2 starting pitchers, a reliever, and a catcher / RH bat is the haul some pundants proclaim Getz to be after. Not sure if that’s conjecture or if they have actual intel… but it makes sense. Especially if the majority of that package helps for years beyond this run.- Trade Ideas/Rumors/Proposals Thread
It’s not just fans who have changed expectations and patience has disappeared. If Schultz was doing this last season we all would be chalking it up to first year/development year, keep sending the kid out there for experience. They are getting him as soon as they are any sign of trouble now.- Trade Ideas/Rumors/Proposals Thread
I like the profile more. Groundballer with big stuff. More well-rounded arsenal. Proven success. Same age, same control. Detmers has arguably the best slider in the league, but that's all he's got. His fastball and changeup are some of the worst among starters. If the league figures out the breaking pitches (stop chasing it), his walk rate balloons along with the FIP.- Trade Ideas/Rumors/Proposals Thread
Adding Detmers, along with Holmes, Minter/Weaver, and Stephenson would be huge for this team. Make it happen Getz.- Trade Ideas/Rumors/Proposals Thread
Detmers's slider is an incredible pitch. He's at like 99 on breaking stuff at Baseball Savant because of that pitch. His fastball does not grade out that well though, at least according to them.- Trade Ideas/Rumors/Proposals Thread
Yeah, good call. How would people compare them from a talent perspective?- Trade Ideas/Rumors/Proposals Thread
RIght, I'm saying if Soriano is cheaper I'd be fine with getting him instead.- Trade Ideas/Rumors/Proposals Thread
That was when they had the 2024 White Sox to beat up on. The entire Central was over .500 because of that. Sox went 10-42 against the Central. - Trade Ideas/Rumors/Proposals Thread
