It's not essentially the same player. Nobody ever mistook Hill for a starting CF. That's Doyle's ceiling, gold glove starting CF with some pop. And it's weird. When we trade Hill for 2 minor leaguers, we "gave him away for free". So in that same vein, we got Doyle for free, as well as Bart and Brazoban.

Quero seems to need work on all parts of his game, whereas it could be assumed that Doyle's defense will play. I don't know how catching defense affects fWAR, but I've always found that fWAR and bWAR were pretty useless when including catching defense. Does Baseball Prospectus still have the best catcher ranking system?

It is. There was a 40-man crunch before spring training, coinciding with the Hicks/Sandlin trade. Romo and Iriarte were cut to make room.

About a week ago, Romo made a challenge later in the game that looked ridiculous. But the way he made it looked exactly like he was just trying to buy Davis Martin a breather, and I think it's possible he's the most on the same page with his pitchers out of the bunch.

It seems like the pulse of the community is that they would have liked another starter, and everybody seemed resigned to punt on a catcher. I just caught up on the trade strings. The prices being paid were nuts. And to a comment you've made a couple of times, that you would have liked the pieces traded for Doyle (Adams, the DSL SS) used to get a starting pitcher. I think those two would have had to be the 3rd and 4th pieces in a Carlson-headlined deal for run-of-the-mill, 2nd tier dudes.

Yeah, nobody is ranting here. I think some of the individual reactions in the general trade string are extreme (worst trade ever, etc.), and those just make me consider them, more. I'm not criticizing anyone for their viewpoints. I don't think that single play changed the org's minds on Pereira, but if they were leaning, I don't think it helped.

Because we're a rebuilding club running prospects through the queue. Hill wasn't a long-term piece. And if they found a taker, they had to move him to give Pereira a shot to see what they had. Same with Acuña, Kelenic, Peters, Murray, Notch and Nishida.

Yeah, the more hyperbolic our glum chums rant, that makes me look for more positives, and then I find them. I've already reasoned Pereira out of my mind over that 8th inning single he let bounce past him on Saturday, and if Castillo can right the ship, I think he's a dude.

I want to say that play on Saturday, 8th inning, flyball to CF, Pereira didn't dive, or block the ball that dropped in front of him. Monty was backing him up, but that may have made the decision for them.

I thought they focused on SP, a reliever, and a RH OF bat. They need two starters, but I believe the asking prices turned them back to Thorpe and Schultz.

C. Every trade seemed like an overpay for dudes they have to work on to build the value they traded for. But they did what they said they would do in the way they promised. Each of the 4 trades makes them better. I hate to lose Adams, Boston Smith and Gabe Davis, but the mere fact the Sox traded them shakes me out of my stan-hood. I don't like losing Pereira.

They're going to pick up that last option and try to trade him in spring training next year, aren't they?

What is there to defend? They got a very good defensive CF whose bat might be coming around. Calling it Dominic Fletcher and Fernando Tatis just shows a limited range of analysis. The Fletcher deal was a wash. It looks to me that Getz did everything they said they were going to do, in the way they promised they'd do it. The only part I don't really like is the DFA of Pereira, and maybe he's a porcelain doll who doesn't look that good in CF.

If we were trying to teach Marcelo Mayer and Roman Anthony to hit a baseball right now, yes, that trade would have been fucked up.
