  1. Watching them as I per force must since they are the in state team, I do agree with you.
  2. There is only one Pudge and he wore 72. White Sox stars mean so little to us we give their nicknames to others? As far as Detroit, it should not be forgotten that the GM who built the Marlins (other than the series win) is Detroit's GM and Trammel has a good rep. Throw in some attendance incentives and there is all the reason in the world to go there.
  3. thank you yahtzee for the post it is as you say there is no such thing as a free lunch nor is this a free country nothing is free, especially America it has been purchased at great cost to say "it would interrupt my life" is to place self over country the question is, what do you value most: a year or two in the job market or service where our county needs you the answer is everything whether it is in military service or a peace witness in Palestine or a civil rights worker in Selma or a student at Kent State or on an airplane in Pennsylvania - what would you give your for? what would you give you life for? Jesus said, greater love has no person than this, to lay down one's life - what will you give your life - alive or dead - for?
  4. I have never (to my recollection) copied something from whitesox.com but this is very forceful 14088.120 in reply to 14088.115 Rose has now admitted to gambling on the Reds to win, exactly as the Dowd report says. Where are all of the apologists now?? On July 5th, 1987, the last day that Rose placed a bet on the Reds to win, they were 46-35. He owed his bookies well over $100,000 and had no way or resources to pay them off. The Reds then went 27-40 until the last 2 weeks of the season when he obviously paid off his debts If you are a bookie and the Manager of the Reds (who by the way owes you a lot of money) all of a sudden stops betting on his team to win, what would you do?? The bookies bet on the Reds to lose and that is exactly what they did. He also won two huge Trifectas, one for over $200,000 and the other for over $300,000. What is the likelihood of that happening?? Pete Rose is a sleazeball who compromised the integrity of the game as a Manager. He allowed known gamblers into the locker room, was suspended from Baseball for justifiable reasons, lied about it for the past 13 years and now when he sees that he can't get out of it, admits his guilt in a book that will make him more money. HOF??? NO WAY!!!!!!
  5. I have been sick of Pete Rose for years, and the place to be sick of him is in the Sports Bar where one can vomit in the restrooms rather than in Pale Hose Talk it is comforting to known that others feel as I do - he is such a scam artist
  6. without looking it up, that sounds like a better ration than Ozzie ever had wear a coat to USCF so you don't catch a cold from all the breeze from the swinging bats
  7. you think so? I am not asking to fight, I am asking because I ponder the question: given everyone involved has egos, etc., and all, isn't it true that every ballplayer in this "possible declining years" scenario will take a smaller amount of money from a new team rather than accept a cut from the old team because to stay on the old team when your salary is cut is a loss of face but to go to a new team means the ego doesn't get involved when KW cut the offer, that was pretty much a way of saying goodbye anyway and I thought it was curious since the Alomars have a tw0 generation connection to the Sox (Sr. having played for us) and as we are grooming Jr. to be a coach, KW wouldn't insult Robbie with the slashed offer unless everyone knew Roibbie was leaving anyway OR his skills have declined more than we realize but they all know it I am just thinking out loud, not arguing with anyone here or even stating a fact
  8. Give Bob my warmest greetings and if they keep him in the hospital we can stand outside and yell "Let him out" and "keep him in." Not the exact quote but he'll get the idea
  9. I think combining would be a good idea and you may do the honors
  10. f*** no to letting Rose in and I am moving this to the Sports Bar where a lengthy thread on this already exists; this forum is for White Sox discussions only.
  11. wow that says it for me too
  12. Steff, When I dealt with the draft it was no esoteric question - I had 22 in the lottery. I had to decide what to do. I had to make a choice I felt was moral and in love for my country. I made it and lived by it. For someone to say that my opinion should not count because I am not affected by it is very wrong. I am perhaps one of the few - ncorg comes to mind - around here who has actually dealt with the draft as a real life issue. I am sure YASNY and others are enough younger than me that they did not have to face the draft. I did. I am incredulous that such an uninformed and selfish statement was made to me. As I said, I have a son who is an active duty Marine. No one here can imagine what it is like when I hear over the radio or tv the announcement... "there were more American casualties in Iraq today..." I have two grandsons. In 9 years the older will be of draft age, if there is a draft. 9 years may seem like a long time to some, but it is not to me. In this question I have a lot at stake. The women posting in this thread are making some very intelligent points. As for the male under 30 crowd, there are only 3 whose political decisions I respect: nuke, with whom i disagree with 99% of the time but I respect him highly because he lives what he believes; apu, who would never ask another to do what he himself will not do; and wino, for the same reason. When Pearl Harbor happened, people signed up, they enlisted. When September 11th happened, people put a flag decal on their car, played flag waving country music, and said, call up the reserves, but don't ask me to be personally involved, I've got my own life to live. As someone from a generation that was drafted and with 58,000 who did not come back, one may surmise what I think. Moral authority does not come from being an armchair patriot who speculates. One has to live it, be it. IlliniBob is right that there are some of us who believe that a draft would be timely because it make issues politically real for a lot more people. Exactly. And I respect IlliniBob because he knows the lay of the land, even though he and I map it differently. And what did I do with the draft? I did not serve, no, because I was a conscientious objector. (And I am very proud of my son, the Marine - he is doing what his conscience says is right.) I did not go to Canada. So whatever I did - there were only a few other options. But I made my decision and lived it. Incredible that my opinion shouldn't count.
  13. don't give that s*** about things not adding up I faced the draft, and dealt with the draft, in my day as did all of my friends, some of whom never came home. My son is a Marine on active duty. How many people are against the draft because their ass would be on them line? How many people are in favor of military adventures as long as they or their children or grandchildren have no risk? It is always easy to support things with other people, with other people's children. Don't tell me I have no right to opinion. Those who think military adventurres are fine should be the ones on the front lines and as an American citizen I have my rights to my opinion on every issue facing our nation and how dare you suggest otherwise.
  14. no. There is elitism these days where too many people feel that they are too good, too important, they are made for better things than to serve and others should serve in their place. Or that making their fortune must come before service to their country. And the national discussion might be a bit different if everyone had their ass on the line - if they had to actually risk putting their bodies where their mouths are. And with September 11th in 2001, the invasion of Afghanistan in 2002, and the invasion if Iraq in 2003, how can anyone argue that these are not monumental times? Our military is stretched thin. I would love to see all the the real gung-hoers actually face having to go rather than send others. This discussion has been had here many times. No one should be willing to send others off to war unless they themself go. And for all those that for physical reasons cannot serve in the military, several years of national service would be fine, especially as so many national guyard troops are now serving front line. And imagine the good uses we have out there - in schools, hospitals, everywhere. Yes, the draft should be reinstated. Absolutely.
  15. I was doing the book, and not quoting but riffing on it - that is one reason it might have made no sense to anyone but then again nothing I write does so what the hell

not as hot as Rowand's wife thinks she is. did I say that?
  22. see that's why I didn't do it - hell if this is fun to some go for it and I will stay away however as I look at my Timex quartz watch and flick on the Sony 12E-B3 halogen desk lamp, the Y Tu Mama Tambien (green) poster over the Steelcase Suite III computer desk, clad as I am in the Armani slacks (a deep blue that is almost black except in that moment just before dusk when the sun catches the angle just right) that I picked up at Prado's while I was looking for a match for the Gucci casual kind of a teal but yet not pullover that makes my gym-chisled chest bulge exactly right, I thought to myself that if anyone did a real parody of the way Patrick Bateman (the literary character) thinks, no one would get it. So I plunge the Haverhill knife with the double serrated stainless steel edge into the still heaving chest of my date (what was her name) as her one still open eye fixes on me with that all waxy, glassy blank stare and get out the Habit-Trail while stopping to drink the last of brut champagne gone so sadly flat from New Years Eve, the Field's crsytal long stemmed glass clinking dully on the Wisconsn marble counter top. but see, only Patrick Bateman will get this and the rest of you think I am more looney than ever so I go away and leave everyone to their winter indoor fun.
