  1. I had to go with Chip. One, he's so f***ing stupid about baseball, which is a problem when you're announcing it. Two, he's there because he chose his grandfather well. Three, did I mention he's so f***ing stupid about baseball?
  2. I think the Sox know he's gone for the year. The boot he's wearing was their only prayer he'd be able to make it through the year. My guess is he'll have season ending surgery in the next couple of weeks. Which would make Beltran an even more valuable pickup.
  3. Arte you hang on to those prospects. Hello, Arizona?
  4. Biggest play of the year so far? KW dumping Koch. But seriously Timo gets the call - for the 9th inning homer against Florida, the 8th inning single against the Angels and the homer off of Maddux. He's Timo, and he keeps on ticking.
  5. I don't know if this has already been posted, but that Disco Demolition special that was broadcast this week is available according to the Sun Times at www.discodemolition.com, for all of you out of towners out there.
  6. Well, at this point both will be free agents, and Maggs is an easier sign that Beltran will be, so I wouldn't read too much into that.
  7. This might be difficult to do. Do we still have Brian West and Daylon Holt?
  8. Last year we couldn't win in Minnesota, this year we've played well there. Last year our manager was Jerry Manuel. Last year our closer was Billy Koch. I say live in the present. We'll handle Detroit. Worrry about Oakland Thursday through Sunday.
  9. Well, for the record, Dusty screwed up last year's Cubs chances (and by the way, thanks, Dusty) when in game 7 he flat out refused to use Clement out of the pen, in favor of the immortal Dave Veres. When it comes to using his pitching staff, in Dusty they busty.
  10. What if the White Sox think there's a good chance Frank Thomas is out for the year? Then wouldn't it be nice to add a switchhitter with pop, like Beltran?
  11. Yasny, I was 9. If we get Randy effn Johnson, I declare a moratorium on KW bashing. Might be tough to enforce, but it can start with us. If the Sox can get RJ, I say give till it hurts, and if that's not enough, throw in some cash.
  12. I think they would live with looking foolish if they saved a lot of money as their season has gone down the crapper. They'll be able to say, hey we tried, it didn't work out, it's time to move on. DOn't forget they traded Billy Wagner because of money during the offseason, then when Petitte and Roger happened they changed courses. Which they must now regret. I'd prefer Randy, but I suspect 3 months of Beltran may come cheaper than you think.
  13. Some Yankee pr guy got into an argument with one of our clubhouse attendants, and security was called in, if I recall correctly. It was a big to do over nothing, so I don't think it has anything to do with the All Star team. I just think Torre doesn't think we're very good. Remember, Buerhle's worst game was the 8 run first against the Yankees. I'd bet Torre remembers that game, and lowered his opinion about Mark. Paulie can't put a solid first half with a solid second half. The screw job was Tom Gordon over Shingo.
  14. Or Seattle, Toronto, Baltimore or the Dodgers.
  15. I would like to nominate this for pun of the year.
  16. I went Bolton, but my heart said Ronnie Woo-woo
  17. Thank you. I'm here all week, try the pork chops and remember to tip your waitress. Alternative answer to when did HC die: When he went to the Cubs.
  18. I was in the upper deck (it was lower back then) between first and home, 4 rows from the railing. I thought early on in game one, this is either the best promotion they ever came up with, or the worst.
  19. I think his liver died in the mid-1970's.
  20. I think it's a great idea. Hell the Cubs are still marketing Harry Caray, why can't we? BTW, the idea of curtain calls after big home runs? Started at Comiskey with the South Side Hit Men.
  21. Well yesterday was Thurman Munson day at Yankee Stadium, and what greater tribute could there be to the late Yankee captain than naming him to the AllStar team?
  22. It's a gong. Sort of a Japanese thing, you see. But it's cool, no doubt about it. On the subject of cool scoreboard stuff, the opening every night gets me going too. They use the Dave Wills' intro, then they have a great video, Gene Honda says on your feet, they use the board to show the starters in groups (outfielders, infielders), the whole thing works for me. Way to go Brooksie!
  23. Joe Torre is a fair man. If there is an opening, it will go to the best available Yankee.
