He could have just called his homers “Mune Shots”, rather than coming up with this lame nickname — “And that’s another Mune Shot for Murakami!” It would definitely be wittier than a played out Japanese reference. Obviously, it is a legitimate historical reference to Japan but it’s just too much of a stereotype these days. It would be like if we had a Chinese player named Kim and Schriffen called him “Kung Fu Kim”. It’s a bit in poor taste to overgeneralize one historical fact and apply it to anyone of that ethnicity, as if it’s all they are known for. It’s definitely a pretty cringeworthy nickname and I would hope Schriffen checked with Murakami through his translator to see if he was okay with it at the very least.
