Northwestern hires Fitzgerald as football coach
Gene Honda Civic replied to Goldmember's topic in Alex’s Olde Tyme Sports Pub
Recruiting is good, but I'd think you'd want somebody with an offensive mind like Walker. NW has to succeed without getting the blue-chippers that other B10 schools have access to. Fitz, although I know nothing about him, doesn't strike me as an offensive guru. Who knows though. Stoops wasn't supposed to be a great offensive coach, but something from Spurrier rubbed off on him, and he had that OK team piling up points on everyone in just a couple years in Norman. -

QUOTE(Frankensteiner @ Jul 7, 2006 -> 10:11 PM) What did Hawk say about McCarthy's ineffectiveness? Only what you've been able to read at that uninteresting blog practically every time McCarthy pitches. -
No conspiracies... Let's just hope he didn't throw a bat at him.

Lummy, Broadway, Fields (cutting his K rate), Sweeney(learning to hit for power) and a bunch of suspects.

QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Jul 6, 2006 -> 12:39 PM) I would also be curious to see what his percentage of runners he left for a reliever have scored as well. It doesn't seem like it has been good. According to BP JG has been saved .09 off his ERA thanks to above average bullpen work. FG has been hurt by .07 JV has been hurt by .18 MB has been saved .12 JC has been hurt by.07 Which evens out to say our bullpen has been very average this season.

QUOTE(Gregory Pratt @ Jul 6, 2006 -> 01:20 PM) PS: When/what time will the winner be announced? Last year, they announced Pods had won before the 7th(?) inning the night the polls closed. -- We should probably know before then end of gametime tonight.

Factually, Garland has gotten the least run support of any of our starters.
-
QUOTE(chitownsportsfan @ Jul 6, 2006 -> 12:03 AM) His great outing tonight only lowered his ERA to 5.30. He's got quite a bit of work to do to get anywhere near his career averages. He'd need to throw about 107 innings of 3.62 ERA ball to give him 215 of 4.5 ERA ball on the season. Incidentally, Garland threw 101 innings of with a 3.65 ERA after the ASG last season.

Cortes is really holding his own. He was probably a little out of his league to start the season, but he weathered the terrible defense that plagued Kanny early in the year, with his peripherals and hit rate have been improving ever since. He's just 19, so he's well ahead of the age curve in the Sally league. Holding his own should be considered a victory. He'll be one to watch in the second half and next season.

QUOTE(Flash Tizzle @ Jul 5, 2006 -> 07:11 PM) Guillen better have some golf experience to atleast make it interesting. If Woods would be legimately interested, I would have Bobby Jenks throw against him. Have Garland or Vazquez throw and he may actually hit a HR. If you saw him no the Big Break thing they filmed, you'd know that Guillen has no shot. That being said, the bet is skewed. Getting a single hit against a major league pitcher isn't equivalent to shooting par. Shooting par would be about equivalent to hitting about .220 for an extended period.

QUOTE(JimH @ Jul 5, 2006 -> 02:39 PM) Lastly ... saying that you as a fan know the White Sox well and don't know other teams well ... but can still tell what's bulls*** and what isn't ... nothing personal but that tells me you don't know a whole lot about how trades are discussed and ultimately come together. I know how trades go down. You check the guys you want to put on the block. Other teams email you with their offers. You accept or reject them. or You make a trade offer to another team, and when the reject it, you go back to the settings and deselect 'fair trades,' then make the offer again. There's only one side to trades afterall :rolly:

QUOTE(JimH @ Jul 5, 2006 -> 07:45 AM) It's my opinion ... ok? Or is that not allowed anymore? What you don't understand, and what you've never understood, and what I doubt you ever will understand is that site is a clearinghouse for things the guy reads, hears, or is told. It really is that straightforward. The problem with people who bash that site IMO is this ... they are frustrated that some of these rumors don't come true. They keep little pencil and ruler scorecards so they can claim the validity or non-validity of that site or others like it. Maybe people read that site because it gives them another viewpoint about what discussions might be taking place? You go out of your way to dismiss it every chance you get. Everyone wants the scoop in trade discussions. Unfortunately, no one ... anywhere ... has the 100% scoop. He doesn't, beat writers don't, radio people don't, heck even a GM doesn't (because they don't always know what the other GM is doing). It is all part of a big puzzle that fans enjoy putting together. I don't understand why that's hard to understand, nor do I understand why you take shots at the site. But that's your perogative. I've read your blog twice, I think it's far less interesting than his site ... so be it. It's all the readers opinion anyways, in terms of what they get out of a site and its content. If you try to position yourself as an expert. You're going to open yourself up to criticism. If you're going to claim to have a source within the White Sox, then over the course of 8 months as the Sox make move-after-move, you have nothing of note on such moves, yet write about other non-moves, you're going to get called out. If you're going to say that a 16th rounder drafted 4 months before, having played only 30 innings in the Appy league, is part of the centerpiece to a major trade, you're going to get laughed at. Time to get make up a new source. I don't claim to have any inside knowledge of the White Sox. But I know them well. I know them well enough to smell bulls*** a mile away. Some of his stuff doesn't smell like s***, for that I give him credit. But the evidence for them having a source in the White Sox is far outweighed by the archive of missed chances to prove his source and the lone Woodson episode. That site has no more inside knowledge of the White Sox than a number of posters here, including yourself -- who might just be MLBTR's White Sox deep throat given your staunch support -- I've never had anything to say about that site re: other teams because, well, I don't really know the other teams all that well. I only chime in when the White Sox 'source' bulls*** starts flowing.

Phil Rogers: Cubs should seek the White Sox for help
Gene Honda Civic replied to RibbieRubarb's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Razor will not be with the Sox next year. He's gonna get his call in the next 6 months. -- Though I doubt it's with the Cubs. They're the type of club that needs a big name. Pinella is the only one who fits that bill right now. -
QUOTE(Heads22 @ Jul 4, 2006 -> 11:54 PM) Good thing Jason fought for him on the Top 25. He's not terrible... And he was probably top 25 worthy when you made the list. That pick sure looked good after his first outing this year; 10Ks 1BB. But that's been cancelled out by his last two outings.

Charlotte win game 1 of a double header? 2-1 -- Phillips with a nice start, CG, 7 IP 1ER. Fields 2-3 with a 3B. -- I don't see a link to another game. BHam got smoked -- Nanita 2-4 with a 3B. Winston Salem wins 3-2 -- A nice comeback thanks to 4 shutout innings from the bullpen. Not much of note from the 'prospects' on this team, Valido went 1-4 with 2 errors in the field. Kanny win in extras -- 3 scoreless innings from 2006 draft picks, OMGrosso and Long, though they allowed 3 baserunnners. OMGrosso hit a batter and walked another. Francisco Hernandes 2-6 with 2 2B and 3 RBI. Great Falls about to lose -- Unless Carter can save them again. He's 2-3 with a 2B, HR, and a BB. 2006 draft pick Cassel has had a good start to his professional career, another 3 scoreless innings tonight. Cruz 1-4 with a 2B. Bristol loses 5-3 -- MLBtraderumor's favorite Sox uber-prospect Alex Woodson struggles for his second straight start, though he may just have run out of gas.

QUOTE(JimH @ Jul 4, 2006 -> 05:29 PM) Because it's a lot more interesting than your blog? # of Trade rumors broken by MLBtraderumors.com that came true: 0 # of claims of insider knowledge by said blog: a bunch # of trade rumors broken by me that came true: 0 # of claims of insider knowledge at said blog: 0 Seems pretty even, though I don't claim to be anything more than a fan who gives a running commentary. # of moves reported in advance by Halos Heaven: 2 in the past 3 months -- But who's counting? Sure he says something about the 'source' -- that he doesn't know who would have a single source with insider knowledge of two front offices -- But I know Al, he works in the building that houses ABC 7 and ESPN 1000. I'd say he comes in contact with people who have close contact with both the Cubs and Sox front offices. In fact, that knowledge sure narrows his source to a few people. I just don't understand why anyone here bothers to read the site regarding the White Sox. He's presented nothing that isn't already discussed in the NY Daily News, Daily Herald, Fox Sports, Sun-Times, Chicago Tribune, or here first. Look at the number of moves the White Sox have made since the inception of that site. Vazquez, Mackowiak, Cintron, Thome, Riske... Now go back and look at the site. Not a single mention of any of such Sox movement re: said players, or at least not before it was widely reported elsewhere. Why bother claiming a source when it's clear that your "source" doesn't bother to give you any real info. Don't even get me started on the Alex Woodson thing again. That was just plain silly.
-
So just to update... Bleed Cubbie Blue says the Sox are talking about a BA+Pitching for Jones swap. 12 hours later, MLBtraderumors runs it, and get's cited here. Joe Cowley of the Sun-Times speaks directly with KW, who denies both Figgins and Jones rumors. A day passes. MLBtraderumors speaks with a source who says the Sox are content. Why does that site get so much attention here?

Harrell with his worst start of the year.... After two easy innings, he lost all control in the 3rd, and wasn't getting anyone out. I hope he didn't have an injury, but he wasn't put back out there in the 4th.
