QUOTE (pittshoganerkoff @ Oct 19, 2010 -> 12:09 PM) I would think the job of a major league manager could be quite stressful. A manager like LaRussa and even Ozzie probably don't care that much about the second guessing of the fans. They can't really, and be successful. I agree that Pinella might get bored. He's a volatile guy, and all he's really known for a long time is managing...and he's been pretty good at it. You never know, he might resurface somewhere with another team. I would think it is stressful, but the fact LaRussa only needs a couple weeks to think about it every offseason (and Leyland too) to decide to come back proves it's a pretty nice way to early zillions. I realize Leyland was out of the game a while, but he's in no hurry to quit anymore, even though someday he's going to probably regret all those cigarettes he smoked because of the stress of managing. I can see smoking during ones 20s when people party a lot and go to the bars a lot, or smoking just on the occasions you are partying in your 20s, but anybody over the age of 30 who smokes is really pretty stupid unless they have a deathwish. Sorry about getting sidetracked, but I started thinking about the pressures of managing.

QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ Oct 14, 2010 -> 11:19 PM) First round needs to move to best of 7. I would 100 percent agree with that.

This definitely says something bad about Ryno. What do the insiders say? Is he too dull? What? He's definitely qualified. And he wants to do it. Why didn't the Cubs just name Ryno? Weird.

QUOTE (fathom @ Oct 19, 2010 -> 05:44 PM) I saw they released Melky today. Wouldn't shock me to see Cabrera with the Sox next year, as he's always been rumored to be a KW favorite. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Oct 20, 2010 -> 05:08 AM) Poor showing by Yankees fans, leaving before the game is over? Weak. Ugh on Melky. Why do the Sox add players who just make me feel blah all over? Just say no to Melky. Yankee fans poured out of the stadium the last two nights. It made me realize when you've won as many pennants as they have, this just doesn't cut it. Down 5 in the ninth and they are long gone.

It'd be harder to win it all if they expand, but it is pretty tough to make the playoffs if you are not a big money team. The wildcard will go to an AL East team every year so we have to figure a way to beat out Minnie or we stay home.

Lee was pretty much unhittable tonight. Amazing how some guys' arms get stronger as the season progresses no matter how many innings they throw. He was money. Unhittable.

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Oct 18, 2010 -> 06:39 PM) No his range is pretty piss poor Is his range really that bad?

He always takes a couple weeks after the season and decides to come back. Time off is overrated. By spring training, he'll be raring to go. It's a pretty good gig if one can handle all the second guessing. And the bucks the managers get paid, it's probably pretty easy to handle second guessing. I bet Piniella will get bored as well unless he has a cushy TV gig.

QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Oct 19, 2010 -> 02:43 AM) 3/4 starter. U can't possibly think he's a 2 at this point. And he's not worth no 12 million. Yes but Jackson isn't worth it either, so what's your point? Our rotation coming through big time as well as the bullpen is about the only way we'll win anything of significance next season. We don't have the bats to do much of significance.

If we can afford to pay Edwin that kinda money you'd think we'd make it happen to keep Konerko. Thing is, even if Paulie drops off offensively the next 3 years, he's a human vacuum on scoops at first and doesn't have too bad of range either.

QUOTE (kitekrazy @ Oct 18, 2010 -> 12:10 AM) Won't help when they play the Yankees. True, but we seem to be OK against the Bosox and Yankees, except for that road trip two seasons ago in September. We get up for them. We need some former Twins to at least wake up our dugout or shake our dugout out of fear when we play Minnesota. Can't you already picture all those doubles and gappers the Twins will rake against us again next year already?

Which Sox home grown talent will have the best career with the Sox?
greg775 replied to Quin's topic in Pale Hose Talk
I put Beckham but the verdict is still out on whether he'll be a star. I think he's already proven enough that he'll have a Durham-length career at second for the Sox. Should pencil him in for double digit years at 2B. Is he a star? We shall see. -
I still think Ankiel would be good n cheap if he could stay healthy. Also DeJesus is finally available if we wanna go that route. This might sound dumb, but I'd like to acquire a Twin or 2 for karma's sake. We need some former Twins on the team.

QUOTE (gatnom @ Oct 16, 2010 -> 08:25 AM) He actually had 2 days off, but Juan is the kind of guy who doesn't like to sit. He played in every single game from 2003-2007, and he even averages 162 games a year for his career. I really dislike his game, but it's hard not to like his attitude. Also, people may look at his .341 OBP and say he had a decent year, but this was also inflated by being hit a little more than twice as much as he ever had before in his career. If you use his average number of hit by pitches (9) instead of the 21 he had this season, his OBP is just barely .330, which coupled with his slugging percentage puts him at an OPS of 646. Juan Pierre is not a good baseball player, and a terrible fit for our stadium. He may not like to sit, but I would like him to sit once in a while. I hear what you are saying though. I like his attitude, too. I like the guy personality wise. I probably would like him more if he was batting ninth for some reason. Of course I like Teahen personality wise as well, but not the player. The post about Juan's slow starts was informative as well. We can't afford Juan and Lexi to stink it up the first five weeks next season. They got to figure a way to get off to better starts. Same with the majoirty of our guys who were .200ish for so long early on.

QUOTE (buhbuhburrrrlz @ Oct 16, 2010 -> 09:38 AM) As long as they get a split it'll be a long series. I am expecting them to split. They totally had this game won. Should they lose tomorrow PANIC MODE. The Yankees lineup is so sick. They just keep coming back. Good call. And nice bounceback by Texas, even at home. Hopefully the Rangers' Lee will whup the Yankees in NY. That would be cool to go up 2-1 after the lousy Game One implosion. GO TEXAS!

QUOTE (joeynach @ Oct 14, 2010 -> 07:34 PM) The one thing I didnt like about Pierre this year was Ozzie's use of him. I can think of two things in particular. One being that as an aging veteran I think Ozzie needed to rest him a few more days. Before we even got to Sept I had a gut feeling that Pierre would begin to wear down a bit due to the immense load on his legs and body over the first 5 months, and I was right, he hit something like .232 in Sept. Second, I didnt like how Ozzie treated him like any other sox hitter. Meaning he never really realized oh wait this guy is incapable of hitting the ball to the warning track like everyone else did. That is why you would see LF for other teams playing shallow to take away his looping line drive. But Ozzie would still do dumb things for Pierre. Like with no outs and Alexi or whoever on 2B he would have Beckham bunt him over 3B with 1 out for Pierre. And Im asking why. How are you supposed to manufacture that run with a sac fly to a hitter that is incapable of hitting the ball out in even a little league park, he has no ability to hit a deep fly ball so why are you doing this. Those are my big grips with Pierre and the use of Pierre. Other than that he showed solid D, a decent OBP, and excellent capacity to steal bases. It was also nice to see a good base-runner out there, not Pods and his ability to get picked off anywhere. For the record I agree with this post 100 percent. For the life of me I couldn't understand why Juan never had a day off? Oz loves to give guys days off. WTF? Great great post.

This may sound dumb as well as many of my other posts, but ... Can the Rangers bounce back from this? This is one, tough loss.

Am I dumb for thinking Damon would be a good addition to our team?

QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Oct 15, 2010 -> 04:30 PM) Can I ask why? Why not? He's obviously a good baseball guy if the Brews want to speak to him. Great suggestion of subbing Omar for Joey. I'd be OK with Omar playing 50 games next year as well, but please not as a starter.

Not to flame, but we have Edwin Jackson now. We don't have the guy we traded for him. So no sense looking back. It's time to hope Edwin is a dominant pitcher. He showed flashes this year.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 14, 2010 -> 02:17 PM) The thing is, there would be just as much complaining if we had held on to Hudson and Hudson pitched like he had the first few starts of the season. Maybe, but I think reasonable people realize or should realize not everybody comes up and dominates right away. It's impossible to hold an argument about Hudson anyway, because way too many people will just dispel any NL pitcher's performance as the fact it's happening in the NL. So it's an argument not worth getting into. Too many people consider the NL a pathetic league and they simply write off performances there as flukes.
-
I'd prefer Hudson but I don't want to look back any more. Jackson is here and I hope he has a great year.

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Oct 14, 2010 -> 05:05 AM) The only thing that was wrong with the Juan Pierre deal was that it was made with the intentions of having Juan Pierre leadoff, when in all reality, he should be hitting 9th. The White Sox gave up 2 borderline arms in Ely and Link. I kind of agree with this. Bat him ninth and I wouldn't be so against him I guess. I wonder why I devalue a guy with 70 SBs so much. I just don't like him much.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 11, 2010 -> 04:40 PM) So in otherwords it is pretty universal that fan bases think they have the worst manager in their game. Yes. Yes. Yes.

QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Oct 12, 2010 -> 09:29 PM) You mean 2001 when KW took over? And yeah, caulfield likes to remind us plenty that we're in the top 5 or so in games won since then. Only numbers that matter for me are 2/10. Our playoff ratio in a division that doesn't feature the Yankees or Red Sox. I'm really surprised we weren't able to dominate our division for years after winning the WS. I really thought we were "built" to do so. Years later color me disappointed and surprised that it's the Twins that have the winning the division thing going for them more than us. Of course a lot of people also thought the Bears would continue to roll after '85. I like the reloading rather than rebuilding. The article mentions our starting pitching staff. On paper ... it's awesome, phenomenal, etc. In reality it has to start dominating ... at least in divisional games. Our great staff on paper sucks on many occasions. Now that Thome flamed in the playoffs and we can calm down about this year's awful DH by committee demanded by Ozzie, maybe the team can rework that position and perhaps add some youth somewhere? It's alarming Ozzie wants Omar back. If he comes back, Oz won't be able to resist making him the starter, not bench guy/tutor. And Juan? Yeah on paper he had a B season, but are any of you excited about Juan? The other scary thing is our team really had a good record this year. That's kind of scary cause we finished six back of Minnie and we were never in the wildcard hunt. I guess we all can keep cheering and hoping. But the question marks remain huge as the Sox try to beat the playoff choking Twins and the 3 mediocres in our division. Didn't you all think we'd be pretty dominant in the Central after winning the WS rather than getting beat down by the Twinks many seasons?
