  1. QUOTE (Jerksticks @ Nov 15, 2010 -> 01:53 AM) I don't think Putz is going to cash in this offseason. Hopefully we get him for another 1yr deal, with better incentives. I agree with this. He was very good in his comeback year, s*** I'd give him and A- even. But considering how he imploded at the end, I can't see anybody giving him a good deal. Bring him back for a year.
  2. There have been many many worse pitchers in Sox history than Jon Garland. He's put together a fairly nice career. Those who called him Judy pissed me off. He did fine as a White Sox and has continued to be serviceable if not decent in his post-Sox career. I prefer this part of his bio on wikipedia. Many blast me for always mentioning 2005 but hey, he is one of many who stepped up to provide us with our greatest sports memory of our lives. The 05 postseason. " In Garland's first career postseason start, he threw a complete game, 4-hitter, with 7 strikeouts against the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, in the ALCS. In his other postseason start, in the World Series, Garland pitched 7 innings and gave up only 2 earned runs." Garland prolly prefers this part: "Following the 2005 season, Garland signed a three-year $29 million contract, avoiding salary arbitration."
  3. QUOTE (pktmotion @ Nov 14, 2010 -> 06:59 PM) That's almost Linebrink money. I think I'd be ok with Thornton (Closer), Putz (RHSU), Sale (LHSU). There's an uneasiness whenever Bobby came out the pen, that self-doubt is infectious and barring a trade(which is very unlikely) he should be non-tendered. Uneasiness? There's a meltdown of epic proportions whenever he takes the mound, at least from a great majority of fans at least on here. It's got to be closer by committee. f*** traditional roles. Thornton, Puts and Sale are the three, folks. Oz is going to have to ride the hot hand. Let Putz start out the season as the closer or whomever looks sharpest in April and go from there. But it needs to be closer by committee. There's no way in hell Putz is going to be reliable the entire season. He hit his rough stretch. Thornton had his lousy outings. Maybe Sale is the next great thing, like Soria. I don't know. If he is, I guess give it to Sale. If not CLOSER BY COMMITTEE baby and I hope Bobby goes to the NL for reasons I post before which get people so mad at me. Yes I hate when former Sox go against us on a regular basis and oft times beat us.
  4. QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Nov 13, 2010 -> 07:25 AM) One could argue every White Sox first round pick from 1991-2007 was an epic fail. That is a credit to the organization that we've been able to have the success we've had with absolutely no help from the amateur draft. Great point. It's also another reason I don't get excited about the draft. Some guys make it; some don't in baseball. Either scouts suck or it's just a tough sport to predict.
  5. QUOTE (Chet Kincaid @ Nov 13, 2010 -> 04:26 AM) Good God why couldn't somebody in the Sox organization teach this guy how to swing a bat? Think of our defense with BA in center and Rios in right... Sometimes the guy holding the bat has to accept the responsibility. Man, what wasted talent. Wasn't he a first round pick? Too cocky?
  6. QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Nov 12, 2010 -> 05:07 AM) Beckham was horrid in '10 and Morel has proven nothing. How is that a championship caliber IF? I thought Beckham had a good second half. Lexi is very very good. Paulie is amazing. That leaves Morel. He's proven great with the glove. That's a damn good IF in my opinion. Much better than our outfield on paper.
  7. Danks hands down. Not to be a downer, but why all the hope for Peavy? Don't pitchers generally reek after coming back from major surgery?
  8. It's wild that on paper, we have a championship caliber infield in Paulie, Beckham, Alexei and Morel. I mean seriously, that's not a bad infield. Our outfield leaves something to be desired right now. Juan is average at best in left; Rios is fine in center, but very streaky at the plate, while CQ remains the enigma. For our outfield to be above average, Quentin has to hit a TON.
  9. I think it'd be dumb to develop a guy for two years, then trade him, but that's just me. As far as him being a mental midget ... I think we nitpick on here sometimes regarding our own players. It seems to me there aren't many better second baseman prospects than Beckham. I guess if he sucked next season, maybe he's another Alex Gordon bust, but it seems to me you don't go trading guys that you develop, guys who have shown signs of brilliance like Beckham.
  10. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Nov 11, 2010 -> 11:20 PM) It was so predictable, its sad. He was offended at playing for $3 million last year so he sits out and now money isn't a concern. Maybe he has a greater appreciation for how lucky he is to be able to play baseball and make that kind of cabbage. I still think he's Paulie's replacement if Paulie leaves. Funny, he's going to make the major league minimum. Amazing how the pride goes away after getting bored sitting out a season. He's certainly going to be refreshed mentally, that's for sure.
  11. Has it officially been reported he's not coming back? I think we all agree it'll be tough(er) to be a Sox fan this season if he's on the team again. I personally would like to hear we don't want him or Jones back, though Jones at least hit a batch of bombs.
  12. QUOTE (JPN366 @ Nov 11, 2010 -> 05:24 AM) So, when will Oakland trade him? He's one Royal I wouldn't hate acquiring, but he's still nothing to write home 'bout.
  13. What former Sox would you want on the team next season if you could only pick one pitcher and one position player? At their current ability. I would choose Hudson for the staff barely beating out Richard. For the position player, I'd choose Uribe I guess (taking the role of super utility man from Teahan and Omar).
  14. I know nobody cares about my argument and you'll all point to different sabes stats but ... if the AL is so f***ing superior, how did the Giants maul our big bad Rangers in 5 games?? I think the AL-NL thing is overrated. Baseball is baseball folks.
  15. QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Nov 8, 2010 -> 04:16 PM) I think we end up with Carlos Peña or Aubrey Huff. I'd put my money on Peña, though. Didn't Pena hit under .200? For some reason I also could see him coming to the Sox.
  16. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Nov 8, 2010 -> 08:41 PM) Which is all we do on this site during the offseason. I actually like that the author here took a different approach - ignore rumors and try to analyze practicalities. Sure its speculation, but it actually added something to the discussion. I liked it, too. It was well done I thought. It obviously was an opinion piece so it was entertaining for an offseason story. I am also a little surprised he dismissed Arizona so quickly. I do think the family situation for a good guy like Paulie eliminates Yankees and Red Sox. He'd be a moron to want to go that far east, being an Arizona boy. I think he'll go to Zona or stay here, but hell, his wife might tell him to take the most money. That's possible too. For 3 years she may tell him she can live anywhere. s***, he and AJ both may go to Texas if they have the cash.
  17. QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Nov 8, 2010 -> 11:38 PM) Dude, I seriously hate you sometimes. Outside of probably 2-3 1B, there wasn't anyone at that position that had a better year than PK. Vizquel was a f***ing roleplayer who was pimped out by dumbass Hawk as the lone savior for our mid-season turn-around. Now give Omar his due. He played a role. But don't get it twisted. It'll be A LOT easier for Omar to repeat his '10 than PK. And I say this with love, greg. You know me and you are cool. I've proven that. I actually am one who thinks Paulie is not done and can come close to the numbers of this year. I must have written my note poorly. I think he was a stud this entire season. He hit for power, roped balls into the corners and what I love about Paulie, whacked several singles as well when we needed them. I was meaning to bag on the people that think it's all great to sign Omar and don't really care if Paulie goes cause Paulie magically is going to see his numbers drop big time. He's 10 years younger than Omar. Paulie is far from dead. I'm also a fan, on the record, who wouldn't mind Paulie playing even if he dips fairly dramatically offensively in the second year of his next two year deal, which I doubt he will. I like watching him play defense. I don't care what the numbers say, my eyes tell me Paulie is pretty good on D. I love watching him scoop everything. Yeah, he sometimes stumbles a bit as an oaf on plays to his right, but so what? Nobody's perfect.
  18. I'm no doctor, but he prolly should get that "achy" wrist checked out.
  19. QUOTE (Tex @ Nov 7, 2010 -> 09:49 PM) seems like an easy move to make. Versatile bench players with all the intangibles, are not the easiest to come by. Especially someone who seems comfortable in that role. Funny how a lot of us figure Vizquel will be equally productive next season yet most people figure a guy 10 years younger in Paulie is about to hit the brick wall where he suddenly declines. Just.Pay.Paulie.
  20. QUOTE (JoeCoolMan24 @ Nov 7, 2010 -> 07:12 PM) Keith Law came out with his top 50 Free Agents list. Not surprisingly, Konerko isn't viewed highly in Law's eyes. He ranks Konerko as the 12th best Free Agent, behind the likes of Jake Westbrook, Jorga De La Rosa, Andy Pettite, and a couple other LOL names. About Konerko he describes Konerko as "The biggest time-bomb in this class as a low-defense, old man slugger". He says that whoever signs him will be an overpay based on his name, and says Konerko is very close to "the cliff". Wow. That may be true, but from start to finish, he had a great great season last year. Low defense is unfair. He's not bad. I agree he could regress and maybe drastically but he's worth a two-year deal. Law basically is saying he's a mind reader and Paulie is just too old to offer a nice deal, to. Because nothing about his performance suggested he'll suck next season.
  21. QUOTE (SEALgep @ Nov 7, 2010 -> 01:34 PM) I love PK, but I think it's time to turn the page. You can't discount his leadership abilities, but I feel it's time for a new group to step up, and a new leader to emerge. Maybe even someone with a little more fire... Besides, I feel Guillen is still the ultimate leader for this team. Don't get me wrong, PK has been extremely valuable, and I appreciate all he's done. I just feel this is the time. Like who, Brandon Allen to play first? Wait, he gawn. We don't have anybody unless you want to put Dayan there which may be disastrous on D. If he is refusing to play winter ball, that isn't a good sign right there. I could live with it either way, but Paulie is coming off a monster season and we still didn't really contend for a division title. We got blown away. Losing him in the lineup won't help us catch the Twinks.
  22. QUOTE (sin city sox fan @ Nov 6, 2010 -> 01:20 AM) If Konerko and Martinez sign for virtually the same money and we don't end up with Paulie, I'll be very disappointed in White Sox management. Victor is a good player, but I would take Paulie over him any day of the week. Exactly. That would be very very disappointing. Why the hell would he be worth that kind of money over Paulie? He had 79 RBIs in 538 at bats last year. In 2009 he hd over 100 RBIs with 2 teams which is good. He had 23 homes and 20 last year. He did nothing in 08. He's about to turn 32. He is not worth that kind of money. No way. Or put it this way, if he is worth that kind of money, so is Paulie. You think Paulie will decline; well assume Martinez is going to decline as well.
  23. QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Nov 4, 2010 -> 08:54 PM) I'm not saying i want him but John Buck could probably hit 20-25 homers playing half of his games at the Cell. Also, anyone who questions the emotions of this team post-AJ hasn't met Mr. Jake Peavy. Yeah but Peavy won't be very effective if he is a shadow of his former self. Guys have to produce to be emotional leaders. To be fair, he was pretty ordinary to s*** early on this season, then got good, then got hurt. He has much to prove in a White Sox uniform, largely because he's coming off a serious injury.
  24. QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Nov 5, 2010 -> 03:56 AM) Does the Marlins' interest in Guillen make him a good manager? I feel like the main reason the Marlins would want Guillen is due to him name and not his managerial skills. What other organizations are lining up for Guillen? Not many because he already has ... a job.
  25. QUOTE (JoeCoolMan24 @ Nov 4, 2010 -> 08:49 PM) MLBtraderumors is saying the Sox are trying to extend Danks now to a long-term contract. Great, so now we are going to have even less money going forward. I mean, as long as it's no more than $7-8M a year, I'll be content w/ it. Don't worry. Be happy. Signing Danks is a good thing.
