White Sox listening to offers for Buehrle
QUOTE (since56 @ Dec 14, 2010 -> 12:47 AM) I've watched Buehrle his whole career and numbers can lie. He is not as good as he once was. At least not consistently. It seems as though he has trouble getting the ball over 85mph. I am not saying our beloved Buehrle is worthless just don't expect teams lining up to take his cintract and give us there star players in return. Trading him for no-names would be a pr disaster and cost more in the long run than paying him. I think his numbers haven't been good. My eyes tell me he's still damn good. He's a damn good pitcher and we tend to undervalue our own. Somebody would gladly pay his salary. He's a damn fine pitcher. I'd say he's an great No. 3 starter on a staff and still a good No. 2 starter.

White Sox listening to offers for Buehrle
MB for Melky Cabrera and Jeff Francour! Obviously kidding. Can you imaging being a Royals fan?

White Sox Off-Season Catch All Thread
QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Dec 12, 2010 -> 11:53 PM) I love Teahen, as a person. As a player, well, he better improve. He's such a good guy maybe we should all try to give him a clean slate. I know I was his worst critic. Maybe I can pretend he's such a good clubhouse presence he'll have a decent year his second season in Chicago. The problem is his fielding is so bad. I'm not sure it can improve at all.

I'll check and ask my friend what exactly he means. This is not a slam but a serious question. Is Obama our worst president in the last 70 years?

Ron Santo has passed away.
I guess we agree to disagree. I can understand it completely and no, I wouldn't freeze my butt off even for 3 hours at a Bears game in January. I'm a little surprised since you were there when Santo was doing his thing you don't understand it more. I'm not a zealot fan, but I kind of think it's very cool when somebody dies and there's this kind of outpouring. I don't think it's creepy at all.
-
Multiple Sources: Sox actively shopping Quentin
If this means a lot of Mark Teahen and I think it does mean that, then that is simply not good. I mean if CQ is gone, Teahen will play a ton. I think that's a fact, jack.

QUOTE (PlaySumFnJurny @ Dec 10, 2010 -> 04:27 PM) I certainly can't argue with you, because grief is personal, and people deal with it in different ways. However, I didn't mean to imply that folks were losers just for going or wanting to show respect in general. My point was that, imo only, camping out for 8 hours in extremely cold temperatures for someone who likely wouldn't have recognized you or known your name extends the definition of "fan" to "fanatical," and in my mental dictionary, there's a small leap from "fanatical" to "loser." And I just can't imagine any of that happening outside the realm of cubdom. I don't recall anything remotely close to it for Red Kerr, who is the closest, non Cub-related comparative I can think of. And for the record, I thought the people I saw sobbing after the last game at old Comiskey might be a little off, too. You don't get it. Santo was a great Cub player. He was a sideshow as an announcer. A lot of baby boomers remember Santo the player and like it or not, he, Ernie Banks and Billy Williams are a big deal. When many boomers think of Santo, they think of their youth and rightly so. He was a big deal. As far as the final game at Comiskey, I remember my last game in there. I didn't cry, but it also was a big deal to me. It's OK to show respect for memories.

Twins trade Hardy and Harris
QUOTE (justBLAZE @ Dec 9, 2010 -> 10:52 AM) Thome officially said he wants to play 2 more years. As hard as Thome swings, kudos to him for being able to keep his back healthy all these years.

Ron Santo has passed away.
QUOTE (Kenny Hates Prospects @ Dec 9, 2010 -> 04:31 PM) Santo was a god awful commentator and he didn't add much if anything to the game from what I've gathered listening. However, he was very passionate for his team and that's probably pretty important when you lose year after year. Not trying to rip on Cubs fans for losing either, just saying. Not all Cub fans are idiots who don't understand baseball. A lot of them are smart baseball fans who know Santo wasn't exactly the most talented announcer around, but I'm guessing the love for the team made up for that. I mean, sometimes you have to hear someone go "Oh NOOOOOOOooooooOOOOOOOO!!!" right along with you. Anyway, I hope when it's Hawk and Farmio's time, both of whom are major homers, that the city shows the same kind of support and forgets the Sox/Cubs thing for a little while. For instance, seeing the tribute the Bulls did was really cool. I'm the biggest Sox fan and don't care about the Cubs at all, but there's no comparison between Santo's death and Hawk and Farmer's passing, whenever that happens. Farmer was an average pitcher at best. Hawk is only an announcer in Chicago; he didn't play for our Sox, although he was the GM. Santo was what a nine-time all star for the Cubs? Big difference. Hawk should get a good amount of coverage, way more than Farmer, but neither should rival Santo coverage. On a side note, I was at Harry Caray's at Midway Airport this week (don't recommend the food or service; better have more than an hour to kill to chance it) and there's a big Santo newspaper front page on the wall in the back. It's a whole front page of when the Sox acquired him. It was a BIG DEAL in Chicago when the Sox acquired him considering there was a column, news story and 2 reaction stories all on the front page. Little surprised that was the framed front page was of Santo getting moved to the South Side instead of all the other Santo front pages from his Flub Days they coulda picked.

Financial News
I have a friend who is in the financial field in Chicago and he thinks it'll be 2 more years before the economy even starts to turn around for the better. I have a question: A.) Do you believe this? And B.) Why isn't the economy a national crisis issue. This issue needs to be ATTACKED as much as the terror issue and all other SERIOUS issues. WTF? People are outta work.

Cancer, modern medicine
QUOTE (Middle Buffalo @ Dec 7, 2010 -> 04:51 PM) It would be the perfect cover. Take that in the spirit it's intended. My mom is getting her last round of chemo this week. She's 71, goes every three weeks, and she still shows up for work. After her last treatment on a Friday, she worked a double shift the following day(she's a waitress part-time to keep busy), and then one shift on Sunday. And I work with people who call in sick with minor aches and pains for three days at a time. Thanks for sharing. What a lady. If I were you I would email the Trib or Sun Times health writer. She is worth a story. That's f***ing inspirational.

Cancer, modern medicine
QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Dec 5, 2010 -> 04:12 PM) I'm sorry that he was getting poor treatment before. I hope the new treatment at UoC works out for him. Stomach cancer is a tough one. Doctors and medical researchers are people, too. People who have dedicated their life to studying various cancers and trying to find treatments and cures for them. People who probably had or will have friends or family who get some form of cancer. As others have said, there's no single cure for cancer because it's not a single disease. It's like asking for a cure for infection--there's many different types, many different pathologies, different treatment options and concerns. Thanks for that post. It made me feel like there are people trying to cure the bastard disease after all.

Crawford to Boston, $142 Million, 7 Years
Seven years is too much for any baseball player. He will not have 7 excellent seasons. I bet he has four good seasons and three lousy ones or vice versa.

Paul Konerko Re-Signs with White Sox
66 pages? Somebody please summarize the thread for me. My opinions: • Fair deal. On paper it gives us nice pop with Dunn-Konerko. • Yes, I personally expect Konerko's numbers to decline some. I still think he's going to be a productive hitter for at least 2 of the 3 years of the deal. I don't think he'll whack as many home runs as he did this past season. Hope I'm wrong. I just hope he has the same approach and comfort level at the plate next season as this past season. He really was a joy to watch hit pretty much all year long. • Arizona was dumb for not offering more money. If you are going to go after him, outbid the Sox. • It would be dumb for Sox fans to compare Konerko's every at bat to Derrek Lee's next season. We got Konerko, not Lee, so f*** Lee. • The loss of Putz is not ideal, as now we have just Sergio, Sale and Thornton. Sergio is going to have to step up, or we're f***ed. I see Kenny mentioned Tony Pena, but my opinion is if we're counting on him to do much, we are truly f***ed.

Lee or Konerko?
Yeah, just like we have to kinda retain Paulie and Buehrle. Just gotta do it.

Lee or Konerko?
How come we always talk about age of players on here and the Yankees don't give a flip about age. They are gonna sign Jeter and Mariano to huge deals and there's a chance their performances could start dipping because of age. I saw somebody concerned about Lexi's age. That to me is kind of nutty.

Ron Santo has passed away.
QUOTE (Pants Rowland @ Dec 5, 2010 -> 05:45 PM) ^^^^This. I am sort of ashamed to say it, but when my coworker alerted me to Santo's passing, my first response dripping with sarcasm was "I guess now he'll finally get into the HOF." I did not wish him ill health or death and feel for his family like I would for anyone losing a loved one. However, from a baseball standpoint, he was an atrocious announcer and an unconscionable self promoter for the HOF. Yes, Bernstein can be a jerk, but I do respect the fact that he will not waiver on an opinion just because someone who he criticized gets sick or dies. Too many people change their stance and start making someone on to be a saint because they have an ailment. I know you probably don't mean to come across this way, since you mentioned you were ashamed to say it, but you come across like kind of a modern day Scrooge/monster in this post. Your last sentence ... I'd counter by saying if someone has an ailment or dies and people speak well of them, that uh, shows class. It's barbaric to blast people when they die or have some bad ailment. Also, who cares if he b****ed about not being in the Hall of Fame? I don't. I like when people stand up for themselves. The Hall of Fame has many many faults and the way players are selected is very very dumb. And as far as his horrible announcing, it's the way it is with homers. Cub fans obviously loved his announcing. I happen to love Hawk's style and he's an incredible homer as well.

White Sox Off-Season Catch All Thread
I don't know how he could mention Cliff Lee and the White Sox. We'd have to trade Buehrle and likely Edwin immediately to afford him.

Pierzynski Back; 2 years, $8 million
Good job, Jerry. This shows again a couple things. Other teams want our players as much as we devalue them on here and on the talk shows. And there's no burning desire for players to leave because of the sometimes perceived feeling that Oz is a clown and our team is a sideshow. Players are not dying to leave the White Sox. Ozzie is obviously a good manager to play for if you produce for him and even if you don't (Kotsay, Linebrink, Jones, Teahen, etc., never grumbled publicly).

Ron Santo has passed away.
QUOTE (whtsoxfan @ Dec 5, 2010 -> 07:31 AM) Good take... Atrocious in the booth, and the stories that are calling his playing career "legendary" are preposterous, but he did a lot good things and raised a ton of $ for the JDRF. Decent human being in a world where a lot of people aren't. RIP. Great point about him being a good human being. It baffles me why so many people today are assholes. It makes no sense. People should live by the f***ing Golden Rule.

Cancer, modern medicine
Thanks for the posts. I just am a bit skeptical about the medical world. My dad has stomach cancer and is going through chemo. He was getting poor treatment in suburbia and decided to go downtown to u of chicago for treatment and he's undergoing a radical new form of treatment. Hopefully the university is trying to find a great cure for cancer.

Lee or Konerko?
Why aren't we bringing Freddy back? He'd be worth a small contract wouldn't he? He was OK.

White Sox trade Scott Linebrink to Braves
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 4, 2010 -> 03:59 AM) The ball Thome hit off Thornton was hit harder. I didn't see that one thankfully. But Roberts crushed it. Hopefully Putz running out of gas last season is because of his comeback from injury. But those that hated Bobby's implosions are not gonna like Putz either if he has 4-5 outings like that. That's all it takes to hate a closer, especially if two implosions come in a row.

Ron Santo has passed away.
QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Dec 3, 2010 -> 09:27 PM) He also added that people dont mention that a LOT of Santo's health problems could have been minimized had he taken better care of himself. Please expand on what he said. Lots of people drink heavily and smoke in their youth. Til they are 40 or so and wise up. What did Santo do to not take care of himself so much??

Lee or Konerko?
QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Dec 3, 2010 -> 06:07 PM) Besides the fact that D.Lee is one whole year older, everything else is in his favor. He's got a higher career ops, much better defender, better athlete and will make much less money on this upcoming contract and once again, this is a real easy decision imo. The fact that Derrek had a bad first half of last season while battling some injuries doesn't change that fact. QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Dec 3, 2010 -> 06:41 PM) I really like the idea of Dlee. I don't know what his long-term health outlook looks like, but if he's fine than I'm ok with him on a 2yr deal worth 14-20M in guaranteed plus some incentives. I think it would be foolish to assume he's going to get half of what Konerko gets in general. It isn't like Lee is some scrub. I think a lot of you suggesting we can get him at 5 to 6M are severley underestimating his value. I could be wrong though, but he's been pretty productive the past few seasons and has been relatively healthy over his career. If he ends up with 5 to 6 per season, its because not enough teams are in the market for a 1st baseman and he ends up having to take less, but he'd look damn good at 1B. If we had an option of Paulie and no relievers or DLee at a few mill less plus an added arm to our pen, I'll go Dlee. Little surprised you two mods are in favor of dumping Paulie for Lee. Don't get it. It's not our money. Ticket prices/parking/concessions will go up every year no matter if Paulie signs or not. Paulie should get a final three-year deal with the Sox. If he insists on huge money again after this deal concludes, then I guess he has to walk at that point. Jerry's getting old and wants another WS winner. I still say if money's the issue we can get by without Edwin. Trade him.
