Sox trade for Yonder Alonso; Alex Call to CLE
I don't mind the deal, but I do wonder what some of our posters who have been positive or quiet about this deal, the ones who stress age and amount of money a player makes is important, truly thinks about this deal? Yonder is old by board preference standards (turns 32 in April). And frankly, his stats? Is there any doubt the younger, lower paid Palka and Davidson given these same amount of at bats in a plattoon/DH could do as well or better than Alonso? I believe they could do as well as an every-day Alonso. That said ... it is a great move for an organization trying to sign Manny. It's obvious to me this will help greatly in trying to land Manny. Of course you'd think he wants to play baseball with his brother in law. Prescient move by Hahn in that regard. I would like to hear from those who thought Avi was overpaid and too old for the rebuild and all that. Take Manny out of the equation and I would think most of the Soxtalk regulars should be against this trade. So are you for the deal greatly because the Sox could and maybe will get Manny as a byproduct of it? If Manny like George Bailey had never been born would you still like this deal?? Speak up please. For the record ... I credit Hahn for thinking outside the box here but remember I worshiped Davidson and Avi and they are gone.

Sox trade for Yonder Alonso; Alex Call to CLE
Thank goodness. I want to see him hoist our next WS trophy. We need some WHITE SOX veterans. We're not going to win it all with newbies folks. We need Abreu to be around for the title.

Good job Fathom. I would expect this will help the Sox land Machado. Why else would we acquire Alonso. Sox looking good for Manny. Hope he continues to rake if we get him.

White Sox Sign C James McCann
I don't care either way. I have heard of this guy which for greg is something to cheer about when we make a move. However, these 2 graphs in the ESPN story intrigue greg. ... The article said: "The 28-year-old McCann hit .220 with eight homers and 39 RBIs in 118 games last season with Detroit. The rebuilding Tigers didn't offer him a contract for the 2019 season, making him a free agent.McCann was selected by the White Sox in the 31st round of the 2008 draft, but he decided to go to the University of Arkansas instead. He then was drafted by the Tigers in the second round in 2011." The rebuilding Tigers don't want him but the rebuilding Sox do? Weird. He is a former second round pick. That's talent right there according to scouts. GO SOX!

Mets sign Familia, 3 for $30
We've had some horrific pitchers on our team, starters and relievers, since 2005. Really bad ones.

Mets sign Familia, 3 for $30
How so. This board loves the idea of flipping guys at the all star break for prospects. We could easily be doing that. Acquiring guys we can trade if they get fixed or even better than they are by Coop.

Avi Garcia non-tendered
Yeah but he's "pretty good." Sounds like we truly might get Harper, though.

Avi Garcia non-tendered
I would love to get him back. Just for the reasons KW suggested. The guy hustles, cares, is a gamer and has some hitting ability. He's not the only outfielder in MLB who gets hurt a lot, folks. They are out there. It happens.

Update per Heyman: White Sox one of 3 teams meeting Machado
I have said many times I don't give a flip about Jerry and the partners' wallets. However I am a realist, albeit an annoying one to many. As a realist I am saying it would be dumb to offer 50-100 million more just to make sure we get him. Maybe call the Yankees' bluff and offer a tad more than they do, but this is one player. Heaven forbid something happen to him paying him all that moolah. Again ... I am all for making Jerry hurt in the wallet, I truly am. I just wonder about giving one guy all that loot when oh, so many injuries occur in sports. If you say I'm a hypocrite, then nix the first part of this post and let me change to say "Pay him whatever it takes; greg wants him!" As I do want him, but if you understand my position, even the better.

Harold Baines HOFer
The guy almost got 3000 hits? The controversy is annoying. He's a credit to the game of baseball but more than that deserves it. Congrats Mr. Baines. We love you in Soxdom.

Moncada hopes to stay at 2b
This is an alarming theory. If we are not "coaching and treating" players correctly this rebuild could be a self defeating prophecy. We got a lot of younguns being developed in our system. If a majority are all busts because of poor coaching, yikes. I have a sneaky feeling Eloy is going to be the best hitter in the game in a short period of time. That's why if we somehow added Machado and Harper, to go with Tim and Moncada and Abreu even, we might be special for a long time to come.

White sox active in starting pitching market
If we decide not to compete in 2019, why not? We need innings eaters. One year, 4 million with incentives. He's probably worth that just as a good influence on the staff.

2018 catch-all
OK. I have to remember people don't like discussing most of the things I do like discussing. I have to remind myself to post less.

I don't go back and read old comments. I didn't know my comment got deleted. Somebody should send people a pm to tell them if their posts get deleted.

Kyle Seager
He's 31 and his advanced stats stunk last year. I would think if he were a member of the Sox a year ago fans would not be speaking highly of him at all. I wouldn't mind adding him though. I won't blast the move if we get him.

Sox Non-tendering Matt Davidson
I wish somebody on Soxtalk would write an essay on payroll and why fans care about it. It's not their money and all fans do is shell out their own money to support the team. Why does anybody care if the Sox have a 200 million dollar payroll someday? If teams released the monetary figures it'd be said all teams can afford 200 million dollar payrolls. Look at the projected sale prices for all these teams and the TV contract figures. My motto is: Spend, Jerry, spend. IMO from a fan perspective there is absolutely no upside to having a low payroll.

Avi Garcia non-tendered
I kinda liked the guy. I don't always look at the total body of work, rather some big moments in a guy's career with the Sox. I recall Flowers hitting a few majestic, DEEP home runs that made me feel like my MLB.com subscription was somewhat worth it.

Avi Garcia non-tendered
I can't help it. I love certain players and I loved his hustle, his improvement in right field (yes he got a little better whether advanced stats show it or not) and enjoyed two seasons ago when he was so damn locked in he sprayed the ball all over the place and hit a few bombs, too. Damn I am a fan of Avi Garcia.

Sox acquire Alex Colome For Narvaez
I hope Colome is nasty fast. We need a flamethrower for the ninth. If he is a valuable bullpen piece, Hahn will be considered a genius following this trade. We gave up a catcher who cannot catch effectively for hopefully an automatic save machine. Fastballs and cutters, compared to Mariano Rivera is what I read. Hahn may win over a lot of fans with this trade.

Leury Garcia agrees to deal
I don't really understand why some players like Leury are beloved and others (Avi, Davidson, Palka, Abreu) bring out the anger in (many) fans. To me, Leury being on the team draws a reax of "really?"
-
Sox Non-tendering Matt Davidson
True, but as a Sox fan if you are gonna cut my guys (Avi, Matt) well you ought to show me some STUDS who are gonna replace them pretty soon. It's sad (to me) that we sign Leury (blah) on the same day we cut two of my favorite Sox. There is a lesson in here somewhere to Avi and Davidson. Players better start studying modern metrics and start improving in the areas of modern metrics that matter to fans/GMs now. Obviously the occasional to fairly often "electric" play means nothing. You got the ability to whack a Kittle-like bomb (Davidson; if we played in old Comiskey Matt and Palka would have roof shots to their resume), that means nothing today. You got no value. Sorry if I'm passionate. Two of my fave players got cut so forgive me pls.

Sox Non-tendering Matt Davidson
Sad day for Greg. I feel like some of Matt's bombs and Palka's bombs (and Matt's funny pitching outings, 3) were the only saving grace in me spending 100 or more for MLB.com last season. The advanced metrics peeps win out again. Hate to break it to some of you, but Matt and Avi are way better than a LOT of players in White Sox history. There are plenty of players worse hitters than Avi and Matt who played for the Sox in history. I'd be SHOCKED if KC doesn't sign him. He's cheap still and they have no third baseman. Give him 600 at bats and see how many dingers he mashes and what his final BA will be for the season. Well, Mr. Hahn told me today with these moves that Matt and Avi are not good enough, plain and simple. OK, Mr. Hahn, I don't love your work or hate it yet in your tenure, but sign me some players WAY BETTER THAN Avi and Matt and if you can, bring 'em in now. I wanna win. Go Matt D! Go Avi baby! Go Sox!

Avi Garcia non-tendered
Sad day to just give up on Avi when we currently have no decent options for rf. I worship Avi so I'm glum. In some respects I hope a Central team signs him or the Cubs sign him since we allegedly are tanking one more season and maybe Avi will gain revenge on the Sox for just releasing him. To be fair, I am no medical expert, have no medical records and have no idea what the medical staff thinks of Avi. Perhaps they think his body is really broken and his contributions will be horrific the rest of his career. If that's the case, fine. Good luck to Avi and better luck to the Sox who apparently are deciding Avi and Davidson aren't nearly good enough to play for the Sox. If that's the case, WOW me, management and bring me some stars as soon as you can! Go Sox! Good luck Avi.
