Are we allowed to get nervous about Moncada at this point?
QUOTE (Jose Abreu @ Sep 10, 2017 -> 05:12 AM) An unsustainable, lucky .300 with limited sample size We love to hate on our own. Jose Abreu, I salute you sir. You play for a horrific baseball team but you have continued to give 100 percent in meaningless games. Jose Abreu is a stud. Case closed.

So Brother Rice scored 55 vs some Aurora school. Does that mean the youngsters have found themselves and they'll win win win? Or is that Aurora school lousy?

2017 AL Central Catch all thread
How much of Cleveland's success is Francona? Scary how good he is. Cleveland suddenly is on quite a run. For sure the Indians will win the AL. Back to the Series. Will it be a rematch with the Cubs or somebody else though?

Jose Abreu with 1st Sox cycle in 17 years
Congrats Abreu! He is so undervalued by some fans. The man is a star player, folks. I'll stand by that statement no matter what the advanced stats may say. I love Jose Abreu.

Something wrong with Avi's legs.
QUOTE (ptatc @ Sep 10, 2017 -> 03:21 AM) Watching Avi run to and from right field was painful tonight. He almost slides his feet. He turns it on while playing but you can see he is struggling. He had two good plays in the OF but after he tried to beat out an infield single, he jogged a little but then walked to the dugout. After this they pulled him and put in Liriano. Anyone else notice this at recent games? Doesn't sound good. What do you think it could be?

Are we allowed to get nervous about Moncada at this point?
QUOTE (NCsoxfan @ Sep 9, 2017 -> 09:12 PM) Meh, i actually don't think Moncada flopping would be disastrous. It would suck, but the rebuild is more than just one player. I thoroughly disagree. If Moncada flopped it would be horrific for the rebuild. He won't flop, though. He'll be great and I think Anderson will figure it out. He's hovering around .250 and still has a lot of homers, etc., during a season in which he's overall been blah at best. Anderson will thrive next season. He has talent folks. Moncada will be fine, but if for some reason he flopped that would be a huge failure of the organization. Huge.

2017 Offseason White Sox News, Notes, and Tweets thread
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Sep 7, 2017 -> 03:25 PM) His teammates sure loved the guy, which means something. Why would they bring him back? Makes absolutely no sense with all these solid prospects and some of the current guys needing at bats. Could somebody answer why you would accept Melky coming back when we have plenty of outfielders who could get MLB at bats in a season where we are tanking again? All you people who don't want to spend any money at all. Why the hell would you give Melky a contract that would keep him in Chicago 2-3 more years. I'd love to hear from anybody who thinks this is a good idea. Now if you say you want Melky so we can keep losing ... uh, we have plenty of hitters in the minors who could play the outifield next year to help us keep losing. I'm totally baffled and mad when I think about this Melky thing. New age Sox fans who worship the advanced stats just floor me. Sorry for my anger but Melky coming back makes NO sense to me at all. It makes no sense if you want to win; it makes no sense if you want to tank some more.

9/9 Sox vs Giants
Shields actually pitches a dominant game. Weird. I don't like him. Abreu is so good it's scary. He's a special White Sox hitter. Always glad to see Avi hit a dinger. Anderson excels today. Back near .250. Man our record sucks. Scary that we are four wins from 60. What a lousy ballclub. Great win today though.

Cleveland at Our Sox
QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Sep 8, 2017 -> 04:06 AM) Pelfrey - 86 ERA+ Shields - 76 ERA+ Holland - 70 ERA+ 1998 White Sox James Baldwin - 86 ERA+ Scott Eyre - 85 ERA+ (17 starts out of 33 appearances) Jamie Navarro - 72 ERA+ Jason Bere - 71 ERA+ I think 1998 was a hair better, but that's about as close as I think you'll find. Thanks for looking that up. Those were very bad starters as well. It's amazing how difficult it is to play MLB. Remember how Bere was supposed to be great? Navarro stunk for sure. Eyre was annoyingly bad and Baldwin was rotten at the end.

Carlos Rodon to the DL, will not pitch again in 2017
QUOTE (fathom @ Sep 8, 2017 -> 04:47 AM) Getting MRI tomorrow. I don't like that we haven't heard the words "precautionary" and "similar to last time" Sad if he is hurt badly. He's a very promising pitcher. PTATC?? What up with the MRI? What could show up?

Another United Airlines debacle
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Sep 7, 2017 -> 06:18 PM) No punishment for the United passenger dragging incident. http://wgntv.com/2017/09/07/federal-offici...gging-incident/ Wink wink. Nothing to see here.

Another United Airlines debacle
I was on a Southwest flight and a mom and dad had a 1.5-2 year old I'd say. I cringed as the child laid on the floor before take off. Not sure if the child was still down there. All I could think of was the fact you wear a seatbelt because there have been cases where planes hit the pocket and people without seat belts on crash into the top of the plane and bust their heads open. I'm thinking mom and dad had their legs over the child so the baby wouldn't go flying into the air if there was turbulence but it sorta made me nervous for the child. Just goes to show you how some planes just let it go. This little kid was old enough to sit upright and have a seat belt I'm thinking. Nothing happened but the flight attendants didn't even discuss procedure with the parents. They just let them do what they wanted with the child. I love Southwest. Just thought this was a curious story.

Adam Engel
QUOTE (Lillian @ Sep 7, 2017 -> 09:56 PM) Back to the topic of this thread; In a previous post, I whimsically dreamed of what a terrific player he'd be, if he could hit even .250, with an OBP of .330, or better and hit 20 - 25 homers. After watching all of the Youtube videos of some of his catches, from his college days to the present, I'm willing to lower my expectations for his offense. Even if he hit .230 with an OBP of .300 and 15 homers, it would be worth it to keep him in CF. Add in a few doubles and stolen bases and he would be productive enough to bat 9TH, while playing Gold Glove defense. I've always embraced the old baseball adage, which calls for strength up the middle. Give me great defense behind the plate, at the keystone combo and centerfield, with great pitching. Let the offense come from the corners. This team is going to have productive offense from 2ND, with Moncada and maybe from SS, if Anderson can get back on track. The Sox might even have productive offense from their receivers, if Collins pans out. Why not give Engel a chance to round out his game a little, at least until Robert is ready? Is Engel potentially as good a hitter as Ken Berry?

Cleveland at Our Sox
LOL. I see we started Pelfrey tonight. I still say Fathom could do as well with a month of practice. Have there been 3 worst pitchers in a rotation in Sox history than Pelfrey, Holland and Shields? I'll put those three against any threesome.

Trade avi in the offseason?
QUOTE (Jenksy Cat @ Sep 6, 2017 -> 05:33 AM) So your arguments are: 1.) Jerry prices parking and hot dogs too high. 2.) Jerry doesn't sign non-existent free agents when the team is rebuilding Sound, sound arguments. Not really so. I am offended that fans are all for Jerry saving money and us having a very low payroll. Want to stir people up on Soxtalk? Mention trying to sign somebody for some $$. I don't understand why Jerry makes your life miserable as a fan in terms of prices and you want to cut him a break and let him have a 40 million dollar payroll. This site is full of management lovers and I don't understand why. If it's because of 2005, say so. I might be able to embrace that, since I loved the title. Aside from that? Blah. I feel the Sox have a bunch of studs Hahn acquired and we should win someday, but there will still be a lotta work to do to win with the studs. They are gonna have to build a bullpen and build a defense to go with the bats. Without that we go nowhere. 2.) I don't see why he signed guys like Holland and Pelfrey and let his peeps acquire Shields. All three are offensively bad. I mean if we are purposely tanking, fine, but if that's so, baseball should at least fine the White Sox for making it obvious. That said ... GO SOX!

2017 Offseason White Sox News, Notes, and Tweets thread
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Sep 7, 2017 -> 01:07 AM) It looks like he will be listening intently on offers this winter for Abreu and Avi. Thinks their contract and age in Abreu 's case don't match up well with their window. A lady wanted him to fire Coop. Coop will be around as long as he wants, although he has had medical issues again this year. If he ever leaves Curt Hassler would take his place. Wow. That means the rebuild is gonna take a long while if Abreu is too old. Their contract? Why would that matter? Why would some lady want Coop fired? Just cause he's abrasive?

Trade avi in the offseason?
QUOTE (Wanne @ Sep 6, 2017 -> 12:43 AM) Joey Belle and Pudge Fisk say "Shaddup Greg"!!! You equate throwing money around willy-nilly (love that phrase btw) to being a good owner? Maybe Jerry should buy you a new attitude...your shtick has gotten pretty stale. And no...I'm not offended. Go be a Cub fan for crap sakes... Some of us don't trust Jerry or the front office. Many of you do. Do you gladly pay the cost of parking with a smile on your face? Do you gladly pay over 10 bucks for your hot dog and beer? Probably closer to 20. For that reason I want jerry to spend as well. Sorry if it's my "schtick." I'll give 'em credit if we dominate the 2000s or win a WS or two. Or win the AL a few seasons.

Trade avi in the offseason?
QUOTE (Lip Man 1 @ Sep 5, 2017 -> 03:33 PM) Do you ever get tired of repeating yourself in literally every single conspiracy-themed post? You know what? If the Sox payroll next year, for the team, is 15 million dollars, WHO THE HELL CARES? They are going to suck next year, get used to it now. It's part of the plan. And you know what? That's completely fine, they aren't ready to win. As for me this is the last time I'm going to respond or read any of your tripe. You are definitely the man, Lip Man, but I hate to see JR make a ton of money on teams this bad. Aren't you offended that he and his partners get all this $$$ while the fan has to pay 8 or 9 bucks, whatever it is for a hot dog and whatever it is for parking? I think Jerry should feel the pain of a rebuild as well as the fans. I'd hate a $15 million payroll knowing JR gets all that profit. QUOTE (Wanne @ Sep 5, 2017 -> 07:56 PM) That "Jerry is cheap" argument is ridiculously stale...good lord. Yet somehow...he still goes out and lands Robert. That being said and back to Avi...like many have stated...unless it's a very nice offer for Avi this offseason... I don't move him. If he continues this torrid pace next year...then you're looking at a nice return at deadline for someone that needs a bat. You don't trade him just for the fact of trading him. He's worked hard elevating his game...and still young. Not a bad problem to have whether you keep him or not and Sox are finally in a nice position to not be forced to make any deals. I think throughout his tenure there could be an argument he is cheap. I'm amazed so many fans seem to think the lower the payroll the better. It's like any significant contract is scorned right now during the rebuild. The Sox aren't moving as we have discussed ad nauseum so why shouldn't the Sox owner make less profit and have a high payroll to go with the Robert signing? Jerry should buy you frugal people a few drinks at least this offseason. He should meet you in the bar and thank u for your position. I'm serious by the way. A lot of cities would run an owner out of town for not having a high payroll in a city as big as Chicago.

Adam Engel
QUOTE (Lillian @ Sep 6, 2017 -> 12:20 AM) A guy with tools, but not really a very good baseball player, is one thing. But Engel has so much potential. Having had the opportunity to see him play, it is easy to see why the Sox have given him every opportunity to succeed, despite his poor offensive numbers. His defense is off the charts. I can't remember a better centerfielder on the Sox. He is right up there with Jim Landis and Ken Berry, from my kidhood days. He has plus-plus speed, great instincts, a good glove and a very good arm. Perhaps he just needs more time to learn how to hit. If there is any way that they can get hm to become even a .250 hitter, with power, which he certainly possess, he would be worth keeping in center, just for that Gold Glove in waiting. What do you think he needs to do to make better contact? I don't think you can learn how to hit when you hit as badly as Engel. I will say his defense is amazing though.

i am drunk 2017
You've never been this drunk ... A friend of mine got so drunk in Vegas he parked his car and forgot where he parked it. He took a cab home obviously to not drive drunk. He woke up with no clue where he parked it. He took 3 days off work and searched all the casino parking garages in the area he drank at. Couldn't find it. Had to report it stolen. Six months later cops called him, they found his car. It was in the parking garage of the Mirage. he was allowed 10 minutes to get all his stuff out of it. His computer was in there. Still working. Had clothes in there and lotsa stuff. Insurance company of course kept the car as they'd already given him the settlement.

Trade avi in the offseason?
QUOTE (Jenksy Cat @ Sep 5, 2017 -> 06:12 AM) Yep I see what you're saying: "I don't understand how any of this stuff works" I do understand how it works. I understand tanking, etc. This is a new phenomenon. You know it worked for the Cubs and 'may' work out for the Sixers in the NBA. But ... there are plenty of ways it can fail. You are basically getting rid of any proven productive player for prospects. I agree "on paper" we got some hella prospects. Eloy, Robert and Moncada and Rutherford and some of the pitchers excite me. But ... again this is a new phenomenon. Remember the White Sox stunk for several years but our manager was uh, Robin Ventura. THAT MATTERS, folks. We had Chris Sale and some other good players.

Trade avi in the offseason?
QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Sep 5, 2017 -> 04:10 AM) Greg. The first half of your post say that free agency is a fool's errand, and the second half says you want the Sox to be nuts in free agency. Can you please explain this? Yes. I wanted them to buy free agents the way they did in the past. They've never given the 7 year mega mega deal but they have acquired some free agents. For instance, Dye signed a two year deal. I forget what Rios signed, but I didn't like him. Dye worked out; guys like him. I mean I still don't care about Jerry's money, but even I don't like the 7 year deals. David Robertson signed a 4 year deal with the Sox. There are nuff of those kind of signings that I wanted to keep us competitive rather than a total rebuild. Dunn signed a four-year deal; that would have been good but he had that one historially bad season before he got his act together. Now if we could sign Hosmer for 4 years, he's young enough. But I don't want 7-8 years. But do you see what I am saying? I see no need for Jerry baby to have a 50 million dollar payroll next year, even if he did sign Robert.

Trade avi in the offseason?
QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Sep 5, 2017 -> 05:01 AM) And that contract is UNIVERSALLY considered a total disaster, despite the fact that Heyward is an above-average to elite defender by both scouting and advanced stats. Almost all of the mega contracts turn out to be disasters. I mean Detroit got rid of Verlander's contract but still had to pay some of it to the Astros. It's why I laugh whenever they talk about guys hitting free agency how much money they are going to get. The media here hasn't estimated what Hosmer is going to get but with 22 homers, 77 RBI and a .317 average, he'll get a ton of money. Astronomical amount. But after two years in his 7 year deal the team will desperately want to get rid of him. That's how it works. My stance on here is well known. I never wanted a rebuild. I wanted to spend, spend spend and stay competitive. Why? Jerry doesn't care about me paying 30 bucks for parking or whatever it is. Jerry doesn't care about me paying 9 bucks for a hot dog. Jerry doesn't give a s*** about my money; I don't care about his pocketbook. Just.Spend.Baby!

Trade avi in the offseason?
QUOTE (Jenksy Cat @ Sep 5, 2017 -> 02:50 AM) lol Have you read his life story? This guy was a can't miss prospect with the Padres I think it was. He hurt his arm; then missed a year after getting hit in the face. I'm telling you, the Sox have a lot of "can't miss" type prospects on the team. If we had to trade Avi for some more "can't miss" guys I wouldn't mind seeing Liriano get 580 at bats next season and see what he is. Don't some of you guys ever judge with the eye test? Liriano is a certifiable hulk of a specimin. U know, Rutherford could be a bust just as much as anybody. GO SOX!
