9/6/2016 White Sox v. Tigers
greg775 replied to CaliSoxFanViaSWside's topic in 2016 Season in Review
Those at bats by Abreu and Frazier really sucked. Why oh why no contact with second and third one out? -
QUOTE (soxfan2014 @ Sep 5, 2016 -> 07:29 AM) This isn't just at Cubs games...This is literally EVERYWHERE in today' society. As a 25 year old I hate going out with people taking pics and videos and just sitting on their phone. Live in the moment. Soxfan2014 tell me more. I know a lot of older people who are using their phones more and more but I'd like to know about 25 year olds. If you are at a bar drinking, are all the people you are with texting and checking websites on their phones the entire time at the bar? If you go to a ballgame is it texting the whole game? Is texting/surfing the iphone the single most important reason 25 year olds get up in the morning? Are all addicted to their phones? Thanx.

QUOTE (bmags @ Sep 6, 2016 -> 06:55 PM) Trump and Clinton were both speaking at same time. Guess which was covered? Clinton in hiding again. As long as Hillary has a big lead, the liberal media will avoid covering her. If she needs a boost or help, they'll come around. Otherwise they just keep covering/mocking Donald.

QUOTE (Iwritecode @ Sep 6, 2016 -> 02:59 PM) Throwing straight at the 10 pin is the proper way to hit it. If you’re using a spare ball that doesn’t hook and shooting straight at it, you shouldn’t have too many problems. I just recently started using a plastic ball for picking up my 10-pins and it works great. Even if I put a little spin on it, it doesn’t hook at all. Where do you stand to throw the straight ball at the 10 pin? On the right side and just try to throw it straight to the left of the gutter? Or do I count my nine lines to the left and just aim at the 10?

QUOTE (Lip Man 1 @ Sep 6, 2016 -> 03:39 AM) The Sox won't be releasing him (yet) for two reasons first off: 1. He's owed a s*** load of money. 2. JR doesn't like to pay people that amount to NOT work (even if they suck). Releasing him would be the largest amount ever eaten by the franchise if memory serves. Why do you think they hung on to Dunn two years longer before letting him go? (Answer: money owed...), or Danks (Answer: money owed) The bottom line is short of a front office change, Shields isn't going anywhere unless he retires himself. Also don't underestimate the fact that if Kenny Hahn releases him with all that money owed it's like sending up an exploding rocket signaling how bad of a judgment they have in these matters. Mark Well, if he insists on not retiring, our only option is to make him the new Albers. Hope he can get a few guys out now and then.

QUOTE (iamshack @ Sep 6, 2016 -> 02:42 AM) At this point, I would guess no. Not sure what that follow-up call was all about. I keep thinking I should check in with them to see where things are, but then I realize maybe I don't really want the job as much as I initially thought I did... Very bizarre they called you just to ask how you felt the interview went. Weird. So many companies handle the hiring process in a very weird matter.
-
Release him. Eat the money (unless somebody agrees to take him off our hands and we can trade him). Don't let him pitch another inning.
-
Build a complete pitching staff somehow. Fire Robin, hire Leyland, fire Cooper and get a pitching coach who believes in 7 innings from his starters minimum. Pitching, pitching, pitching, defense, defense, defense.
-
My gosh our club stinks. Loss after loss in the Central. Robin, you are a very nice, classy man, but aren't you embarrassed by your team's laying down game after game vs. your neighbors?

QUOTE (Insp @ Sep 5, 2016 -> 09:39 PM) Given the uniformly negative nature of your postings here, I'm shocked that you're shocked at how low the attendance is. He's not that negative. He just knows bad baseball when he sees it.

QUOTE (Iwritecode @ Aug 31, 2016 -> 03:36 PM) So I joined another adult/youth league with my daughter. She's 14 and typically carries around a 160ish average. Last night was our second week in. First game I had a 197 and she had a 204. It's the first time she's beat me at bowling. Ever. Then she proceeded to beat me in the next two games as well. I had a 167, she gets a 175. The last game I managed a 221 and so she shoots a 232. She finished the night with a 611 series which was also her first 600 series. Not that I'm really complaining though. The better she gets, the less I have to spend on her college tutition. Man, she can bowl. Do kids that age ever get tired of the sport? Or is she a bowling enthusiast? I have a question. I have a decent curve (hook or whatever it's called) and I usually am in the pocket. My method allows me to have a fighting chance for most spares. However, as a tall righty, I cannot for the life of me use my curve ball to pick up the 10 pin alone. I normally would go nine lines from my normal strike position and try to hit the second arrow with my 10 o clock grip. Instead I fail miserably. I've gotten to the point I scrap any normal strategy of bowling and just try to hit it straight on with a straight ball cause I am so flustered. To see the 10 pin there is sad cause I know I can't make it. the seven pin is easy for me.

QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Sep 5, 2016 -> 07:21 PM) I listed this a while ago so I'm not going to do fall-on-deaf ears research again but Pierce and I believe Hoover are easy calls. Pretty sure Taft's staff was beyond corupt. Nixon. Buchanan. That's just winners. If we include losers, Aaron Burr takes the cake, pie and whatever they sell at the Lawrence Applebee's. Good list. I guess our whole system has been corrupt forever. That's why I wanted Bernie. He seemed genuine. Hillary and Trump should be thrown back so to speak and we should try again.

QUOTE (flavum @ Sep 4, 2016 -> 02:37 PM) Thanks to the 2016 White Sox, they've pretty much ruined hot starts forever. Any hot start now will inevitably bring, "Remember 2016....23-10, then terrible the rest of the year." Every 27 this year: 19-8 10-17 12-15 11-16 12-15 27 left. Another 12-15 would surpass 1973's quick descent to awfulness. It's amazing how 23-10 really was no indication of what kind of team the Sox had. You'd think 33 games would provide a good indication. Maybe next year we should get a totally heartbreaking loss out of the way the first week so it doesn't decimate our season. 23-10 was so good it made our front office think we had a contending team as the season progressed and they foolishly added Shields instead of trading Robertson, Melky, Avi, Lawrie, both catchers earlier, Duke, etc.

2016-2017 NCAA football thread
greg775 replied to southsider2k5's topic in Alex’s Olde Tyme Sports Pub
Do you guys think Missouri football is going to be OK or is it ready for a steep decline? A 26-11 loss at West Virginia isn't that bad when you think about it. From the outside looking in, do you think it was a mistake for the Tigers to leave the Big 12? Would they return if asked just to get Kansas on the schedule again in two major sports? Alabama is on such a roll in college football. Untoppable? -
QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Sep 4, 2016 -> 06:58 PM) Hillary isn't even remotely close to 'most corrupt ever', christ. Edit: This is more or less due to the fact that we have had some pretty s***ty ones. We're talking "corrupt" though. What other candidate (besides possibly Donald) has ever been more shady/corrupt than Hillary?

QUOTE (Jerksticks @ Sep 4, 2016 -> 03:45 AM) Can Hillary sideline it all the way to victory? I keep feeling like at some point she's going to have to engage the public or say or do something presidential. Is responding to trump's weekly actions with a righteous tweet going to be enough? I'm rooting for trump the next month to make it a closer race. I want to see some action and i want the debates to decide it. Good observation Jerksticks. I feel she can win by doing what she's doing. Not many people seem to want the egotistical Trump. I wish people would consider Gary Johnson or simply write in somebody. There's no reason to pick one of Trump/Hillary. Again as far as your point, it's not like Hillary is out of the public eye. She's doing enough to be seen. Her lead is big enough that she doesn't have to talk all the time and possibly remind people why the Clintons are disliked by so many. I'd advise Hillary, "Stay the course. Just speak at rallies and enjoy one of the biggest runaway victories in history."

So there was an earthquake in Oklahoma Saturday that was almost a 6.0. People felt the tremors all over the place, Kansas, Arizona, everywhere. I was wondering if you think fracking is the problem. Oklahoma is getting hit with quakes all the time now. I am thinking we are messing with mother Nature too much. We're just asking for massive earthquakes by fracking. Is there any solution to this? My fear is some bigger quakes are coming. This one was pretty close to being catastrophic. Another point or so on the scale and it would have been a problem.

QUOTE (iamshack @ Aug 1, 2016 -> 09:35 PM) Had an initial phone interview for a dream-type position today. Follow-up interview next. Are you getting the job? Have you been waiting long since that call asking how you thought things went? QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 13, 2016 -> 10:11 PM) There are 2 heisman winners on the pillar showing names of heisman winners outside the football stadium. The other guy is a running back from, he's also on the HOF pillar and has a statue. Manziel...does not. Are u a professor at A&M?

QUOTE (nitetrain8601 @ Sep 5, 2016 -> 04:24 AM) Been over a year at my current job and I can't stand management. Most importantly I can't stand my bosses boss who I have to meet with on a daily basis. Over the past month, I've become so agitated that I've started looking. My family is even fine with me taking a paycut. They see how much I'm hating this job. I'm pretty sure my boss is going to be pissed (he's the type who thinks about HR rules later and says or acts first) as he wanted me to train the replacement guy for last guy who left (also after a year). Wondering how I should deal with him. I know he's going to ask me where I'm going and probe until he gets an answer. I just want advice on how I can shut him down politely because I have a feeling he's going to get these hard feelings I have for this job out of me and I'll just rant. I'm a very even keeled job and have liked every job I've ever had, but this one, I can't fake. You'd be surprised. When you tell your boss you are leaving he won't grill you about things much. If you have a new job you have a new job. The boss has heard it before. I mean if you hate your boss' boss that's the way it is. If he is adamant about knowing why you are leaving, just tell him you got a new job and would rather not say where it is. QUOTE (SoxPride18 @ Sep 5, 2016 -> 12:59 PM) Hey guys, thanks for asking about my job. I am working part time at State Farm now, trying to get license still (i've been real busy with school in the classroom and working at school). It's actually not too bad cold calling, it just sucks because no one ever wants to talk to you about insurance. Greg, we get internet leads, and lists of renewals of each month of people's insurance is expiring, so we call them if they are interested in State Farm. I work 2-4 hours a day there and make roughly 40-50 calls a day. Probably will actually have a conversation with 5 people. It can be brutal. Only been there a month and I'm already the 2nd longest person that is there. Have had 3 others quit in the last month. One of which was my friend, that I got the job, and quit after 4 days. As far as my master's, I am getting my MBA with a Sports Management endorsement. All online classes, discussion post due every Thursday (200-300 words), then respond to 2 other posts by Sunday (100-150 words), then a 3 page paper due every 2 weeks. So far, so good in terms of the school part. The GA side of things, I'm mainly the Social Media Coordinator right now, the other GA who is in his 2nd year is handling most of the computer stuff right now (I'll do that more as the year goes on and a lot in year 2). For game days, I'll be down on the field tweeting, instagram, and snapchat, so that's pretty cool too because I do interact with the players and get pretty good footage just off my phone. That's how things are going so far, thanks guys for asking. If you make 50 calls and have five conversations, do the others just hang up? Do they scream at you then hang up or ?

Sorry to hear this. Hope he is better soon.

QUOTE (flavum @ Sep 4, 2016 -> 07:04 PM) Alexei Ramirez released. Nice 9-yr career. Good chunk of change. I saw that. I wonder if he's way older than people think. All of a sudden he couldn't play anymore. Weird. I bet he's 44 or so.

Congrats, Abreu. Have a game why don't ya! Great performance. He's putting up some numbers. Nice to see Anderson with the clutch game winning double.

QUOTE (harkness @ Sep 3, 2016 -> 06:52 PM) Yes this is me also. I hate political correctness and censorship and I am a big believer in freedom of speech, although ugly things can come from it, is incredibly important. Standing at attention the flag is really almost some type of thoughtless, action by many people in the stands. Most likely thinking about if they want to buy nachos or beer after its over. In certain moments, during certain times the anthem can be quite emotional. The problem with not standing to the flag because of injustice that you feel or see - it's too much of a generalization, and it really doesn't do anything to change the status quo. Sure there are bad things about the US, but there are also many great things. So when you kind of say F*** you flag" you aren't really making any sense. Basically its just a symbolic contradiction. I love the "now its got people talking" line. As if that really means anything. I've had so many conversations about police/racism issues of the past couple years. What he did changes absolutely nothing on a broad spectrum. I'm a teacher and I remember having a conversation with a young black student. He was basically condemning police officers and doing much of what CK was doing. We had a pretty good discussion about prejudice and how judging anyone, a black man or a police officer, before you know them or their actions, is prejudice. Everyone needs to be treated on their own merit and not lumped in some big pile of ideology. He understood what I mean't and most kids do. Then sports figures go out and wear socks with pigs on them. It's his right. But that does nothing productive... especially for kids that look at these athletes as who they want to be. He's not that good a player. I'd release him and let some other organization deal with his distraction. Last time I looked this was a "team sport" and he has grasped all the attention on that team. Good luck to them winning anything of note this season.

QUOTE (DrunkBomber @ Sep 1, 2016 -> 07:07 PM) I never said it was a scandal. I just stated my opinion that it looks bad for a former president, who also happens to be a multimillionaire, to use tax dollars to help pay salaries of employees of a not for profit that brings in billions of dollars and uses 90% of it on expenses, salaries and travel. The top executives of the Clinton Foundation make over 500k per year and we need to use tax dollars to help pay for it? I find it odd we Americans complain about the corrupt politicians yet we are about to elect one of the most corrupt ever in a landslide vote. What is going on here, America?? Great post.

We should do some polls to pass the time and vent

QUOTE (CaliSoxFanViaSWside @ Sep 4, 2016 -> 06:02 PM) My attitude is what new ? The Sox have been the sorriest franchise in baseball history. The only team to have ever been caught throwing a World Series . All the lifetime bans from that . Disco demolition, fans attacking umpires. Cheap terrible or no money owners odd uniforms and I'm sure I'm not remembering some stuff. Oh yea a midget batting . One World Series win in forever . But I'm stuck with them and that won't ever change. I don't think the midget batting is that big an embarrassment. I think the hires of Bevington and Robin are pretty embarrassing though. Robin had no experience and it would take an idiot to think Bevvs had leadership skills as well. Sox are a pathetic franchise but letting a midget bat a couple times isn't that ridiculous. I think another good poll would be "are the Sox the sorriest franchise in baseball history?" as you suggest. They might actually be, but I doubt it cause of the WS title in 05.
