Our record vs. the three central teams above us
It's scouting and it's execution and it's not caring about beating one's divisional foes. The White Sox opponents know where we are gonna hit the ball and are positioned perfectly. Their pitchers know how to strike out our hitters. I'd love to see strikeout totals vs. the Central the last four years. Also our team does not play "hard." The Royals always get up for our games and seem to enjoy kicking our ass. Remember before this year when they kept throwing at our hitters? The Sox just stroll out there the same way against all opponents. That lazy attitude doesn't cut it and we lose. Our talented players usually perform way better against good teams outside the division. We need to dump Robin, and improve our scouting.

2016 AL Central catch-all thread
Do the Royals have a better chance of winning the division than netting the wild card? I think so. The wild card is tough to make up one game a week.

2016 Cubs catch-all thread
QUOTE (JUSTgottaBELIEVE @ Aug 28, 2016 -> 03:57 AM) Why wouldn't you take 4:1 odds on the best team in baseball and heavy favorites to win the World Series? I mean those are great odds for a team in their position no? Do you think they are going to win the World Series? It's a simple question. If the answer is yes why not take the wager? Those are incredible odds for the money. If you go to Vegas you got to bet 1,000 on the Cubs to win 4 grand.

A new term for use by Sox fans
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Aug 30, 2016 -> 05:12 PM) This may fail miserably, but here goes. I think the next time you hear an athlete 1) answer a question by cleverly not answering, immediately followed by 2) throwing out a droll sports cliche, this should be called a Rick-Robin. Like being rick-rolled, except the media is being rick-robinned. I'm bored, sue me. Nice. Excellent post.

CEO of Guaranteed Rate seems like a good guy
QUOTE (InTheDriversSeat @ Aug 29, 2016 -> 10:36 PM) ChiSox59, you have your opinion, I have mine. But it is a well known fact that CEO's can be compensated by corporate boards (with salary, stock options, and bonuses) that are hundreds of times more than what regular employees are making, while performance is not commensurate. Not comical / inaccurate at all. Read this to find out the outrageous amounts that CEO’s are getting paid: https://www.thestreet.com/story/13463357/4/...much-money.html Victor Ciardelli seems like a regular guy. He started and built privately held ‘guaranteed Rate’ on his own, and wasn't brought in from the outside and given hundreds of millions of dollars from a corporate board of directors, like other CEO’s. I'm not a big CEO guy either. Somehow our country's workforces have turned into paying one CEO a gazillion dollars and the little guys get hosed on lousy benefits, salary, vacation and the like. I don't like it. Companies think they are doing the little guy a favor just by matching 401K's anymore for gosh sakes. Most don't even match 'em. Disgraceful.

The Anthem
QUOTE (knightni @ Aug 30, 2016 -> 01:16 PM) That's pretty ignorant. Why do you have the right to do what you believe? Well, it is a team sport like I said. Coaches generally push the buttons of "one for all and all for one." A quarterback is a leader. It seems kind of counterproductive to have the QB do this one thing that thrusts so much attention on himself in the preseason. I would think odds are there are a ton of athletes who probably would love to sit out the anthem as well. They just don't do it. Now as an Ozzie supporter, I love outlandish behavior and didn't mind him thrusting all the attention on himself. Maybe I should have minded that more, but I do feel he did a lot of that to take the heat off his players and let them play ball while he took a lot of the headlines by saying wild stuff.

Take Warning (Suspensions are Coming)
QUOTE (pettie4sox @ Aug 30, 2016 -> 04:28 AM) greg I doubt people dislike you, they may think you troll to much but dislike is a stretch. Hell you annoy me but I still don't dislike you. Thank u. QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Aug 30, 2016 -> 04:30 AM) Eh, I'd buy you a beer. Thank u. I wouldn't want a Falstaff, Schlitz or Hamms (kidding, old beer references). I don't know what I'd order actually. QUOTE (Harry Chappas @ Aug 30, 2016 -> 02:34 PM) I think you are the best poster on this site And I am not just saying that becasue you could have sat next to me high school Thank u. My cross country coach at Rice was Brother Schul. I wonder what happened to him. Overall he was really young at the time and a very nice guy. I don't think he really knew what he was doing though. I do know he was mad as hell at me after the league meet my freshman year. You had to walk the CC course before to know where you were supposed to go. It was at some park somewhere. We sufficiently learned the course. The gun sounded on a cold wet November day. We all started running and the pack of Catholic League runnes took a right turn. Myself and my Rice pal started to go the correct way, but we panicked and followed the pack going the wrong way. Anyhow, the pack indeed went the wrong way. After a couple miles we saw the chute and kicked it in. The meet organizers signaled we all went the wrong way and we had to repeat the course. Gassed from sprinting and thinking the race was over, my shoes all full of mud, I fell from about fifth overall to about 90th during our repeat run of the course. When the race ended Schul grabbed me and screamed, "All you bleeps had to do was go the right way and we would have won the meet! What the hell were you thinking??" He was furious. I was tired and mad and I hated cross country that much more.

QUOTE (Harry Chappas @ Aug 30, 2016 -> 03:48 AM) The best two QB's at rice and Marist are sophomores. Marist soph will probably start next game or after Simeon. Rice could be great but it will come down to coaching while fails them often. Best talent in Illinois is at east st Louis with good coaching they could win 8A. That's very interesting about the sophomore QBs at both schools. I wonder if they'll move Marist QB to RB if another kid takes over soon. I do get worried cause you've mentioned Rice's poor coaching before. Do you know if Rice switched anything on defense this year re. coaching? That defense looked pretty good. Marist couldn't do squat. Any reason Rice's defense would be improved? I did notice they had a pretty big kid playing defensive line or LB. Looked like a good player.

Illinois High School Football Thread
Pardon my Brother Rice homerism ... I watched the replay Sunday night not knowing the score. Rice won, 31-7 over Marist. I thought the defense was surprisingly good and the story of the evening. Marist had no chance running the ball, except when its QB, a former Rice player, ran the ball. However, he had no chance of breaking one. He would get a few positive yards though. Next, unfortunately I was not impressed with Rice's QB. First year he's starting. I thought he did OK. His best throw was a deep pass up the middle for a TD in which he stood in the pocket and got drilled. He made some very poor decisions and a strong opponent would have picked a few of them off. Marist may ultimately be good, right now they are not a good team IMO. Smalling looked very good as advertised. They are gonna have to get him the ball. I'm not trying to be a dick. These are just high school kids and I am proud of the easy victory over a rival. My hope is the QB improves (hell it was the season opener) and the running back who broke a long one is the real deal along with Smalling. I'll give Bro Rice an A for the opening victory. Marist gets a C (no apparent stud playmakers; suspect defense). Rice BTW appears to have an excellent placekicker.

The Anthem
QUOTE (Tony @ Aug 30, 2016 -> 12:45 AM) A presidential candidate just recently called our former Secretary of State "The Founder of ISIS", and Colin Kapernick is getting roasted and told to leave the country if he won't stand for the National Anthem. We've got much bigger problems than the QB for the 49ers He not only didn't stand for the Anthem he blasted the USA in his quotes. This country is full of good people as well as bad. We've had a lot of heroes in recent natural disasters like floods and his comments are insulting to the USA.

QUOTE (JohnCangelosi @ Aug 29, 2016 -> 06:49 PM) You know if we all met each other in person we would probably get along or at least not hold each other in contempt so much. What would it take?
As hot as the Royals have been they only crept to 3 games of the wild card. The wild card is impossible to attain. That's why you have to win your division. Some year the Sox will figure that out again. Sox would have to win 85 percent of their games the rest of the way to sniff the wild card.

QUOTE (GreenSox @ Aug 30, 2016 -> 02:39 AM) Ventura, Williams, Hahn and Cooper live in la la land. They are not grounded on planet earth. These dim bulbs think the Sox are in the race and run the org/team as such. I can't believe they all thought we had a contender. What we had was a one and a half month wonder. As far as tonight ... ho hum we are patsies of Detroit, Cleveland and KC. At least my guy Saladino excelled again and Anderson is hot again. Love that. Nate is a 6 out of 10 folks. That's all he is. A 6.

The Anthem
QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Aug 28, 2016 -> 07:14 PM) It's not like he went to a military event and told people to go f*** themselves. His employer provides him with the right to not stand during the anthem. It's his American right. Yes but the National Anthem is about our military who protected our freedoms. If you are going to sit during the anthem you better expect a knuckle sandwich when you go out in public and run into some military men and women who lost buddies in wartime. Basicallly Colin is flipping the bird at the USA which is not a great idea when you live in the USA. It's pretty lazy to just sit down during the anthem as a protest for the treatment of African Americans and minorities. s***, why aren't hordes of African American players joining him seated on the bench?? He's the only one so far. QUOTE (Middle Buffalo @ Aug 28, 2016 -> 07:45 PM) Athletes get criticized when they don't take stands (Michael Jordan) and when they do (Muhammad Ali). Whether they are correct or wrong, it is their right to protest. That is one of the freedoms that our soldiers have afforded us. You can disagree with him. That is your right. The flag represents both things. Good point except this stand is pretty childish. There are better ways to protest this issue than flip the bird at members of the military. He's not even a starter. My guess is the Niners would like to dump his ass. I hope you guys take the time to read what this army vet said about Colin. He lists things he could do in protest instead of insult the military. http://ijr.com//2016/08/681907-army-ranger...ut-natl-anthem/

The Anthem
QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Aug 28, 2016 -> 08:06 PM) 1. Go on Twitter. Plenty criticizing him. 2. Ozzie's oftentimes selfish actions are not in the same stratosphere as Kapernick using his platform to point out injustice in this country. But didn't his platform of pointing out injustice in this country serve as a slap in the face to our military and those who do GOOD in this country?

The Anthem
QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Aug 28, 2016 -> 07:43 PM) If you think Kapernick is avoiding criticism for this, then you're incredibly tone deaf. It's his right to do what he believes. Let's not pretend that our country has treated people of color well throughout history. Two responses: 1. Do a google on him. Crickets. Silence. Nothing much criticizing him. 2. Why does he have a right to do what he believes? This is a team sport isn't it? I seem to remember Sox fans throwing a hissy fit anytime Ozzie did something about Ozzie. The second Colin K sat down the whole game was about him. It'll be about him all week. Are team sports fans in favor of stuff like this happening? As far as our country having a bad record treating people of color ... our country also has heroes diving into the flood waters of Louisiana to pull a woman and her pet out of her sinking car. Hell, he makes 12 mill a year. Not a bad perk for playing sports in our country. And again, the anthem signifies a lot to the military heroes.

The Anthem
So Colin Kaepernick sits during the National Anthem at the Niners game. He's not getting a lot of flak because of his explanation: He can't support a country that commits so many wrongdoings against African Americans and minorities in the United States. Now don't forget for a minute how Gabby Douglass got slammed on Twitter for merely not putting her hand over her heart during the Anthem (which was absurd; Gabby got unfairly hammered on that one). Now a week after the Olympics, Colin is pretty much escaping harsh criticism ostensibly because people are afraid to criticize him lest they be considered insensitive to the recent police actions against African-Americans. Hmmm. This is a tricky one. Colin should be getting roasted on many levels. 1.) Football is a team sport. He just thrust ALL the attention on himself. As they say it's a huge distraction for that team. 2.) Whenever somebody goes after the flag, it is usually an unwinnable situation because you are offending our great men and women of the military past and present. He can say all he wants about treatment of minorities but not standing at attention for the anthem?? You are attacking the soldiers who lost limbs serving our country and gave their lives. Usually these athletes that take a stand cannot survive such behavior because they are personally slapping our military personnel in the face. Watch the Military when the flag is present. Have you been to a military funeral? If the anthem is played ... wow, such respect. Should be interesting to see how this plays out. They play the anthem at sports events for a reason. He is a public figure. What if half the crowd supports him and sits. Should there be a movement now? Because of Colin, when the Anthem is played is that a challenge to all of us to SIT DOWN in support of African Americans and minorities?? You can't defend Colin on this one. At best (for him) he starts a movement where half stadiums sit during the anthem and all black playes and minorities sit in defense of his position. At the worst he gets booed/jeered/threatened if the Military people are upset enough. I give Colin an F for his efforts and I think he purposely waited until the Olympics were over to do this. Comments?

Melky & Robertson make MLBTR list of 20 who could be traded...
QUOTE (NCsoxfan @ Aug 27, 2016 -> 11:57 PM) Wait, there's a return we need for those guys? We're not talking about Q or Sale here. I can't imagine there'd be a substantial return deserved for either one. They waited way too long to dump both guys. It's all timing. They could have gotten something for both of them months ago.

Dioner Navarro traded to Blue Jays
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Aug 27, 2016 -> 08:19 PM) The fact is Jones does not get lit up a lot like you claimed. He apparently is pretty deceptive since major league hitters strike out a lot vs. his offerings, and they don't square much up. Wrong again Caulfield. Try another sport. You don't understand anything about this one. And if anything, you are getting more ridiculous by the day. I'll back Caulfield on this one. Jones is one of our best relievers but he's far from reliable. I can't see him consistently nailing down saves with his funky delivery. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Aug 27, 2016 -> 08:22 PM) I'll make sure to save this because Nate Jones won't last one full season as a closer with the White Sox. It really doesn't make sense to have three closers (in your idea) in Robertson, Jones and Burdi on a sub .500 team and not trade at least one of them for a position player or payroll relief or both. I don't think he'd last a full season as closer either. Out of all our relievers he's best option for the 8th though. QUOTE (elrockinMT @ Aug 27, 2016 -> 09:49 PM) Nate Jones is fine as the Sox set up man leading to the closer, whoever that may be. We will see and have already been seeing possible bullpen arms for next year Not a bad post. QUOTE (soxfan2014 @ Aug 28, 2016 -> 05:50 PM) The White Sox are so thin in the lefty reliever department that anyone bring in is a plus. Our lefty relievers do stink, though Jennings passes the eye test. I don't know what the advanced stats say. As it stands, if our starters could go seven, Jones/Jennings in theory ought to be able to get us through the eighth. Modern baseball has really hurt the White Sox. Our starters don't go seven innings that often leaving us ill equipped to cover three innings.

If Rice loses to Marist, isn't Crete pretty powerful? That could be an 0-2 hole hard to climb out of.

QUOTE (Harry Chappas @ Aug 26, 2016 -> 05:02 PM) Greg your guys open v Marist at Soldier Field then host Crete. They have the toughest schedule in the state. Hopefully they have the players to back it up. Some really good games this weekend as well. OK, will Br Rice beat Marist Sunday? What's the verdict. I see St. Laurence won its opener at Benet and scored a lot of points. Is Laurence for real or is Laurence Loyola Light with the spread in its infancy there? Is Rice's defense any better this year?
