QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Jul 20, 2014 -> 07:28 PM) I appreciate Hawk's contributions over the years, but my god is it annoying how much he dominates each broadcast. Stone can barely get a thought in without Hawk interrupting. Time to either force Hawk to retire or find another partner for him, because the current pairing just doesn't work IMO. I notice some games he has a b****y edge to him, so to speak. And those days he interrupts Stoney a lot, etc. Some days the two are a delight to listen to, I feel.

I'm glad to see the draft lovers on this board have not wanted the Sox to tank this season to get a high draft pick. This case again shows the uncertainty of the draft. What if the Sox would have drafted this guy and they not signed him or his arm woulda fallen off so to speak in the minors? I haven't read the threads, but certainly some Sox fans would have loved to draft this guy. What did Houston get out of having the worst record last year? Nothing. It's all a crapshoot, baby.

QUOTE (Feeky Magee @ Jul 20, 2014 -> 07:12 PM) He's gotten lucky with his ERA, he's been one of the worst starters in the majors by a lot of different metrics Interesting. QUOTE (Soxfest @ Jul 20, 2014 -> 07:15 PM) Hahn would use the 16 mil in other areas. Danks is a shell of himself anymore. He's had a batch of quality starts. I don't understand why fans despise some players because of the amount of money they make and others get a free pass. I like Danks' season. I like Danks' style. He appears to be a Peavy-like bulldog out there. Danks is the least of this teams's problems IMO. Let him earn his big bucks. He's not deserving of the animosity IMO. Caufield pointed out the Astros have his number for some reason. So be it. I like Danks.

QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Jul 20, 2014 -> 05:51 PM) That is easily the stupidest thing I have ever heard. I already find some unwritten rules annoying, but that is just ridiculous, it makes zero sense. Yes this is ridiculous. Is this truly one of the unwritten rules? If I am a hitter and somebody has a ridiculous shift like that on me, I'd learn how to pop a bunt over toward third and do it every time they shifted on me. Is a hitter supposed to hit into the shift without fighting it at all? What has the regular print media said about this one? There's nothing more ridiculous than seeing a guy like Dunn make an out right into the shift. If there's nobody on the leftside of the infield, bunt the fricking ball that way every single time.

QUOTE (Soxfest @ Jul 20, 2014 -> 08:00 PM) Danks 15th HR given up....go away. Why do so many people hate Danks? He's having a great year for a guy coming off an injury. He's performed pretty well this season. So what if he makes a ton of cash. It's not our money. It's not like Sox would do anything with the extra cash if they didn't have to pay Danks.

QUOTE (Jose Abreu @ Jul 20, 2014 -> 03:46 AM) Who are you and what have you done with Greg Ask the board veterans ... I used to be one of the kindest posters when I always stood up for Dye, Wise, Pods and of course Jenks etc., when they were under attack.

So educate me please. I broke my foot and had to go to the orthopedist a total of four times. The first time for diagnosis. I waited two weeks and was still limping badly. I wasn't a p****. I waited two weeks, then figured I better go in lest I screw myself big-time over not getting a possible broken bone assessed. The next 3 trips to the doc every two weeks were for him to naturally check on the healing of my foot. Anyhow, as expected, on the first bill, the insurance company refused to pay for the Xray and the brace they gave me. The next 3 visits they refused to pay for the Xray. What the hell? Is this just organized thievery of the insurance company versus me? How the hell is the doctor supposed to assist me without Xrays showing whether the f***ing bone in my foot is healing or not?? The Xrays are NEEDED. And the brace? I just knew insurance wouldn't pay, but again, does my insurance company want me to not wear a brace, sprain the foot again and need surgery to insert screws? As it was, my doctor avoided any type of surgery. Do you share my anger at the insurance company paying HALF my costs each time? Of course I had a copay each time just to walk in and see the doctor. Why can't insurance companies PAY THE f***ING BILL? Am I out of line thinking I got ripped off?? (I get my insurance thru work).

QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Jul 19, 2014 -> 02:26 PM) Ozzie can do no wrong to Greg. It's all Cowleys fault that Ozzie is basically angling for Robins job Cmon. He's not angling for Robin's job through Cowley. I didn't get that at all through that story. And if those 2 had that intent, they are the dumbest 2 individuals alive. Robin is actually doing fine with the talent he's been given, as much as I've disagreed with moves in 3 games I think he personally cost the Sox this year. Ozzie isn't that dumb to think he can get a job managing the Sox through Cowley. I guess Jerry could do anything when it comes to Ozzie, but a better way of getting the job is having Jerry come to his kid's wedding as Jerry did. I do love Ozzie, though. You are correct, sir.

If this is a trend, I will start loving on the Internet. A Yahoo Live Concert? KISS? Cool. I watched it. It's like you are there. https://screen.yahoo.com/live/event/kiss

QUOTE (scs787 @ Jul 19, 2014 -> 06:15 PM) Did John Danks kick your dog or something? Snubbed an autograph request? EJ quality starts- 5 Danks-14 (in 1 less start btw) Great post. There's nothing wrong with Danks right now.

QUOTE (BigHurt3515 @ Jul 20, 2014 -> 04:03 AM) Winning is better than losing That's how I feel. Cmon folks, let's hear it for the 2 wins vs. the Stros. Better than losing to 'em. Once again many individual players normally despised come through. Flowers?? Kudos tonight again for his 3 hits and the big one. DeAza? Nice job again. The bullpen? WTF. It came through again. Noesi does OK and Eaton and Lexi excel again. Of course Eaton and Lexi aren't despised, just the others. If we could get A. Garcia back could we contend for wild card? No, I won't go there. But like Big Hurt said ... winning is better than losing. Happy Saturday!!

Cowley certainly hurt Ozzie with this story. Ozzie couldnt help himself by saying "I wish" when asked if he wanted to manage. So it got twisted that he wants Robin's job. Conclusion: This reminds the White Sox why it's nice not having Ozzie around. He talks too much to media and this proves he can't stop and play the cliche game. Ozzie can't handle the media part of the job. He's too funny and honest. Basically he likes reporters too much. Most managers tolerate reporters but certainly don't trust or really like them. Ozzie either feels he has to entertain them or at the least give them good copy.

QUOTE (Tex @ Jul 19, 2014 -> 03:33 AM) About a year ago I went to an oil change place and gave them my keys and waited. Their attendant backed my truck into another vehicle. The oil change place refused to pay My insurance refused to pay I just received a notice of being sued for the amount. Seems that by giving them the keys I authorized the idiot to drive my vehicle making me responsible. Yeah, media war begins next week. Fortunately two of my very best friends deal with the local media on an everyday basis and are hooking me up with the local "on your side" reporters. That's just s***ty that you are responsible. What are you supposed to do? Whenever you go to a place like that you demand to drive your own car? They'd not let you and you could never get an oil change. Insurance has to take a role and sue the oil change place. They should be paying. Their employee wrecked your car. That's cool you have gone to the media. They should attack the case. I'd suspect the oil change place won't want the horrid publicity.

Kudos to the Sox that I normally hate on. Viciedo for the HR, his 12th. Webb and Bella for bullpen excellence. Dunn for the weird double and no strikeouts in four at bats. DeAza for two hits. Flowers for the big big rope double.

July 18 Game thread White Sox vs Astros
greg775 replied to southsider2k5's topic in 2014 Season in Review
Today's game had many of the lower-level Sox, the ones some of us tend to hate on, excelling. Dunn whacks the weird double; Viciedo with the bomb; Flowers with the rope double; DeAza with two hits; Webb and Bella doing the job in the pen. Kudos to the lousier Sox who did well. Viciedo again lending hope to fans that he might be getting it. His homer number climbs to 12. What's up with all the pitches for Q? I didn't watch the game. Only 5 innings? -
QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jul 18, 2014 -> 09:22 PM) Absolutely. It's why you so rarely see guys jump straight from the draft to the pros, whereas you see rookies in the NFL and NBA excel and sometimes even dominate immediately. But I hate this treatment of baseball players' psyches as being so fragile they need seasoning. What about these 19 year old NBA rookies' psyches? Nobody gives a s*** about them. You think Ben McLemore was ready for the NBA grind? Or most first rounders who suck? They are not ready yet that sport rushes them in with no time in the DLeague unless they are so awful they have to be sent down a while. People still give Beckham a crutch for being "rushed." The babying of baseball players sickens me. They don't need 5 years in the minor leagues if they can play.

QUOTE (lasttriptotulsa @ Jul 18, 2014 -> 09:06 PM) Saying Davidson has 10-15 HR potential is laughable. He clearly has 20+ potential, possibly even 30. K rates are based on K/PA not ABs. At the AAA level, his K rate is roughly 28%. That is not good, but it's not going to lead the league or anything either. His BB rate is fine. At the AAA level it is roughly 9%. That would be higher than anybody on the Sox current roster not named Adam Dunn. I honestly think part of Davidson's problem this year is that the disappointment of not making the roster has caused his issues. I really felt like he was ready to be the opening day starter. This last paragraph is just crazy. The excuses we fans make up for ballplayers. That is ridiculous speculation that his horrid season has been caused by disappointment of not making the big league club. The guy obviously has holes in his swing big time. If you are right, then you are the greatest baseball mind of all time. I just think it's an excuse for a guy sucking thus far.

QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Jul 18, 2014 -> 03:13 PM) Eh I love Mark but putting him in the hall would kind of be a joke. Not many pitchers will be making the Hall of the Fame in the future. Careers cut short by injuries. We all know what happens to closers. They only last a few years, so forget them. That leaves starters and hardly any remain dominant more than a handful of years. Ever Verlander has turned to mediocre.
-
QUOTE (SCCWS @ Jul 16, 2014 -> 11:55 PM) Davidson will need at least another year in AAA. Offensively he is another Tyler Flowers. He will probably hit 10-15 HR but he strikes out better than 1 out of every 3 ABs and he does not draw many walks. He is a mediocre defender probably similiar to Gillaspie. Davidson is still 23 so maybe by 2016 he figures it out. It's funny how 23 is old in the NBA for prospects. Crazy how the two sports differ in terms of "readiness."

Well as far as innocent til proven guilty ... finally an example of that this week. Another woman in Houston was accused of being in a beauty salon and strangers had to bust open the SUV to get 2 kids out. Turns out the "witness" was a moron who gave the TV station incorrect information. The woman had been with the 2 kids in a store (surveillance showed this to be true) then in letting the kids in the van, she dropped the car keys in the van and locked the door. The kids were hot immediately and crying; the woman sprinted in the salon to get a hammer; she broke out the window and she climbed in to get her kids. So the "witnesses" were very unreliable and it was very sloppy reporting. There's a lot of sloppy reporting these days in this twitter era.

QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Jul 17, 2014 -> 08:28 PM) You mentioned he is thinking of going into physical therapy. While he's less likely to make 200K plus (presume he's close to that number currently), he is looking at having earnings potential in the low 6 figures (maybe not out of the gate but in a major city if he does things right, I believe people start somewhere in the range of 75 - 100 or so). That'd be nice. I hope he continues to have a passion for phys therapy as he moves onward. I can see how it'd be rewarding. QUOTE (illinilaw08 @ Jul 17, 2014 -> 10:04 PM) Lots of big law firms, especially in cities like New York and Chicago, are sweatshops. Just sweatshops that pay well. Lawyers working 80 hour weeks are definitely in on weekends. Big law, in big cities, rarely cares for "work life balance." I did not know this stuff. Interesting.

Sox finish in last in Central. Sox get somebody to take Beckham in a better return than we expect (it's that first round thing). Sox trade Viciedo for righthanded pitching. I'm thinking it's 50/50 on a DeAza deal. Sox might hold off til offseason on that since they'd be trading two outfielders in my scenario and Eaton is kind of injury prone. Sox do not trade Alexei. I'm starting to think he's untouchable as the team tries to build a core lineup around Lexi, Abreu, Eaton, Gillaspie, A. Garcia and Semien. Sox also do not trade Danks. That's it. I really feel confident in these predictions.

QUOTE (Tex @ Jul 17, 2014 -> 10:16 PM) Thanks for posting the link. Buehrle seemed to enjoy playing the game like anyone of us would. Grateful to be there, smiling, having a good time. Cared about his family and how his profession affects them. I wish more players were like that. If the HoF was filled will guys that made baseball a great sport Buehrle would be a first ballot HoF. Baseball is much better off because he played. Great great post. QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Jul 17, 2014 -> 10:48 PM) Buehrle is my favorite White Sox ever and one of, if not, the best pitcher in franchise history. He will always be a member of the White Sox and this awesome article deserves being in PHT for all Sox fans to see. I hope one day he wins #300 with the Sox and he ends up having another 5-7 year successful run on the southside!!! Awesome post. QUOTE (Markbilliards @ Jul 18, 2014 -> 01:08 AM) His fast pace has to help too. Anybody know if his teammates have better fielding metrics when he's pitching vs. ave pitcher? Or if he gets more run support than other pitchers because his teammates are more in-tune to the game? That's what I was thinking. The fast pace is a huge part of what makes him great. More pitchers should get a clue and copy Buehrle. His style can work. Great to see no negative comments in a Buehrle thread. He is amazing.

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jul 17, 2014 -> 12:24 PM) Traveling for work can get old fast. It's not the same as traveling for pleasure. And if, as you say, life goes by fast, why spend it all working so much if you're not enjoying yourself? I appreciate my free time plenty without needing to routinely work more than 40 hours a week. Spending years working 60-100 hours sounds absolutely miserable, and that's with me generally enjoying what I do. I guess you are right but maybe this is a generational thing. With the unemployment rate so high and people losing their homes, etc., it makes me think people like my cousin who have put themselves thru school and gotten educated and now make a huge buck should just get used to the fact work is not fun. I am assuming when he's not traveling lawyers at least get weekends off most of the time. I haven't asked him. Maybe I'm mistaken. It seems like the way the job world works today, he's entering his prime money making years from 30 to 60. I'd assume law is different from many fields in which people over 50 aren't getting hired anymore. I'd guess a good lawyer can work til he dies in his 80s. My concern is in today's job climate, how bad can being a six figure lawyer really be? It's not a sweatshop. He's positioned himself to start raking in the money and chugging along the next many years to retirement. Starting over having to educate himself in a new field at 29 seems silly in today's horrific job environment.

295 dead aboard Malaysian Airlines shot down over Ukraine.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 17, 2014 -> 06:50 PM) Check the history on that. Nothing really happens. There should be total outrage and repercussions. Innocent people shot down. I'm getting concerned about my trip to South Korea next summer. My fear is with all this type of stuff happening that the kook in North Korea might want to make a statement and invade when South Korea is hosting the World University Games. I don't want to spend the rest of my life in some North Korean prison or get shot down on the flight to South Korea. That's a different topic though. Today's news horrifies me at the death of civilians for no reason.
