QUOTE (Dunt @ Jul 17, 2014 -> 06:15 PM) Binford would be a great get too Viciedo would fit right in with KC. Undisciplined hitter who doesn't draw walks. And he'd be a total disaster in the vast outfield there.

Sox willing to deal Beckham in "right deal now"
greg775 replied to Heads22's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (Bigsoxhurt35 @ Jul 16, 2014 -> 10:20 PM) Ok I should've said I wana see Micah for the last two months. Just to see him. His speed is electric. Would just like to see him get some majors ABs to see how he'd handle it. Semien would definitely be my starter for next year though. There's no logic here. You obviously don't want to "rush" Semien so you keep him in the minors while giving Micah two months of experience. Then next year Micah is in the minors and Semien is our starter cause you don't want to rush Micah. I'm sick of the cliche about not rushing players. Semien clearly is ready to sink or swim. Playing Micah two months while telling the world he will not be on the big league team next year just so you aren't accused of "rushing him" is dumb to me. Trade Beckham and let Semien do well or fail on the big league level. -
QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Jul 16, 2014 -> 10:21 PM) As far as the pay/lifestyle thing goes, I think that guy should do whatever he wants. HOWEVA, if he has law loans, suck it up for another year or whatever and pay those suckers off before moving on. If he's making bank without a wife or a kid, that's the perfect time to do it. I'm in a spot where i'm not making what I probably should be making, but my firms practice and the people I work with are awesome. I have a relatively light case load, I have different kinds of cases, I can take off days here and there without totally screwing up my schedule. I probably work 45 hours max a week. Would an extra 10-15k really be worth not getting home to see my wife and kid until 8 every night? Nope. See that's what I'm thinking he should do. Look for a better law firm. Your firm sounds great. Just because my cousin is getting worked hard doesn't mean there aren't better places out there. Also the fact his boss is giving him six fricking months leave of absence proves the boss must be a decent guy. Look, he is 29 years old. If I was to be a true mentor and I am not gonna go there, I'd say to him. "You are 29. You are making incredible money. You are not always going to have to work these crazy hours. Yes you have to travel and work on cases, but a lot of people LOVE travel. It can be fun to travel on the company dime. Being a physical therapist (as he wants to do) will require no travel to speak of. Any travel you do in life will be on your dime. Nobody said work was easy. You are 29 and the next 10 years of your life are gonna speed by. Enjoy being a lawyer. It's what you studied and what is paying you handsomely." Would that advice be off base? QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Jul 16, 2014 -> 10:27 PM) I was going to suggest corporate law. Yeah, working at a law firm can be tough, etc, but just because you don't like that, if you are doing well and getting great experience (which he presumably is as I presume he's working for one of the top firms, given you mentioned big pay, blah blah blah), then I would encourage a first alternative to getting into Corporate law. Pay isn't usually as much as the law firm, but can still be extremely lucrative and hours, etc, tend to be much better. Often times people go to work at those firms to eventually settle into that area. I spent the first 8 years of my career busting my hump working 60 hours a week most weeks and 80-100 for months at a time, but always knew while certain aspects I didn't like, the long-term opportunities were great and there was an eventual light at the end of the tunnel when I was ready to cut back on the hours, etc (mainly when the kids came around). In the grand scheme of things, pretty small sacrifice to make to try and position yourself and ultimately your family as well as you can for the long-term. Note: Unrelated side effect of it. I find that I complain less than almost anyone I know. People cry about working 42 hours or blah blah blah and It amazes me. They don't appreciate their free time, etc. When you work hard and work a lot, I think you come to better appreciate the free time and from my perspective, I did it because I wanted to (to move up, etc) not because i had to. Totally different story if I was working 2 full time minimum wage jobs to put food on a table (cause in that situation, there is a gun to your head to do it and provide where as in my situation, I felt that I can't complain because i am lucky to do what I do and I ultimately chose to do it; If I don't want to, I can always leave and go work somewhere else). Great post. I agree with your philosphy on work/life in your last paragraph. I'm a little surprised my cousin doesn't like to travel. Yes it's work, but he's 29. I remember traveling a lot in my 20s and having a blast chasing women, etc., having fun on the road in clubs. I'm pretty close to my cousin; that's why this is an emotional topic for me. We've all shut up and supported him.

NCAA basketball 2014-15 thread

QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Jul 15, 2014 -> 01:56 AM) Hinson won't schedule tough until he knows the team can take it. He did that stuff with MSU and it cost them at large bids because their OOC RPI dragged them down No offense, but SIU was in such a shambles you have to wonder why Barry took that job. Is there any way in hell he can turn that program back around? You guys got any good players yet under Barry? -
QUOTE (raBBit @ Jul 16, 2014 -> 08:27 PM) That story was 100% true. I don't know (or can't speak towards it at least) that they took alcohol out of the clubhouse, but this was in 2007 and the Coors Light could have been in his Escalade. You guys could have called the cops on Ozzie and got him in a heap big pit of trouble. Can't have open containers. Stupid and they'll keep you in the jail 24 hours I bet.

QUOTE (BigHurt3515 @ Jul 17, 2014 -> 03:40 AM) No, its so simple. 1) They want to break up Sale-Quintana-Danks 2) They would rather have Sale face KC then Astros Good call. Hopefully Sox are sick of getting swept by KC. Pitching Sale would be a start to actually beating KC in the Cell.

Yes or No, Danks for Santiago straight-up
greg775 replied to The Ultimate Champion's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jul 17, 2014 -> 03:45 AM) Why? The Blue Jays/Marlins trade passed scrutiny, where they gave up Josh Johnson/Reyes/Buehrle. Or the Red Sox dumping Adrian Gonzalez, Carl Crawford and Josh Beckett, to name another. The money involved here isn't close to that. If you were a Padres' fan in 2009, you would have said the commissioner should have blocked the Jake Peavy deal, yes? Cause Danks is light-years better than Santiago and this would be a travesty IMO. -
Yes or No, Danks for Santiago straight-up

Some guys on this site want Jerry to have a payroll of about 10 million. Heck no to this trade. The commissioner should veto such a deal. Danks has actually become good again. -
QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Jul 16, 2014 -> 07:39 PM) Pick the life you want. I prefer doing what I want to money, so that is what I do. No point in making a lot if you cant enjoy it while your young. Thing is, you have to have money to live and not be on the streets. I have a fear of being kicked out on the streets so I work 60-80 hours a week most of the year. I've been told employers love people like me. i'm a little surprised my cousin would give up the pile of money he's making. Obviously the boss loves him if they gave him a 6 month hiatus to think about what he's about to do. Seems silly to give up a couple hundred thou a year. At some point you enter the real world. Wife, kids, house, etc.

Not sure if this belongs here, but to make long story short. My cousin is a 20-something lawyer in chicago who makes good money. He got put on some big cases as far as doing some of the 'grunt' work -- flying out to various cities on the company dime to talk to experts, etc. Staying at nice hotels, living the good life on the road. Sounds perfect -- travel, money, being thought highly of at the law firm and a rising up and comer. However he has to work tons of hours (he's not married or dating anybody anymore) so he decided he hated the profession and quit. The boss talked him into taking a six month leave of absence instead of quitting. The leave of absence will run out soon and he's thinking of returning to school to be some other occupation. My questions to you: -- Do you think this is a generational thing? Kids that are raised to just be praised and receive participation trophies have some unreal expectation of the workplace? I mean it's called 'work' for a reason. Or do you think he has the right to quit and start over, to go from making mega dollars to nothing? Obviously his mom and dad are freaking out. They thought they had a rich son on their hands, now he's preparing to go to school again and be poor. Geez. If you were him would you simply suck it up and use your law degree and rake in all that money the rest of your life? Or would you return to school to be a much lower paid profession? Is this a troubled kid to give up all that money? Give up putting his law degree to good use?? Finally, is the law profession in Chicago horrible? Are 20 somethings not interested in the rat race of chicago law?

QUOTE (raBBit @ Jul 16, 2014 -> 07:10 PM) I'll never forget seeing him drive out of the parking lot at Spring Training in 2007 when he waved at our group with a Coors Light as he drove by. This couldn't have been more than 10-15 minutes after the game. If that's true, that's just horrible of Ozzie. I mean you can't wait til you get to the hotel to drink some beer? It's even worse than texting and driving, though not by much. Very very dangerous to drink/text and drive. I thought all teams got rid of alcohol in the clubhouse. Is your story true? As far as Ozzie, I won't go into all the reasons I love him again, but BRING HIM BACK. He's a winner! As far as Ozzie again, tell the truth would you rather have Ozzie as your manager right now or Robin?? And why? I'd take Ozzie for reasons you probably don't want to hear again.

Regarding Davidson ... I thought he was a horrible defensive player, too.

Sox need righthanded starting pitching. Best way to get that is through free agency. Also desperately need a catcher, but are any out there? Also could use a great hitting third baseman.

Sox willing to deal Beckham in "right deal now"
greg775 replied to Heads22's topic in Pale Hose Talk
It dawned on me today that Gordon Beckham is a Sox lifer or until he leaves on his own accord, which he probably won't. He's one of those guys they'll never pull the trigger on in a deal and admit a huge draft mistake. -
The return just can't be much for Conor Gillaspie. Keep him and see if he gets even better.

QUOTE (Charlie Haeger's Knuckles @ Jul 13, 2014 -> 11:19 PM) Hooray for AAA filler. Big league filler. He's the latest body to throw out there and give him a shot.

QUOTE (Al Lopez's Ghost @ Jul 14, 2014 -> 04:02 AM) Harry Chappas Nice. As I recall he made good contact, but had no pop cause he was so short/small.

QUOTE (chw42 @ Jul 14, 2014 -> 03:15 AM) I don't think we could have wished for better results from Abreu. .292/.342/.630 at the break with 29 homers. Amazing. His natural talent is amazing. You could build a lineup around that guy. Cmon, Hahn. We have a few good hitters in the lineup and some who don't belong in the big leagues. Let's fix it ASAP.

QUOTE (elrockinMT @ Jul 13, 2014 -> 10:10 PM) After todays debacle is it too early to say "LET'S TRADE SANCHEZ." "HE IS WAY OVERHYPED!" His minor league stats this year are pretty good, 42 RBIs. Man, he looked shorter than 5-11 during today's game though. Remember that shortstop the Sox had years ago who was 5-foot-6? I forget his name.

QUOTE (South Side Fireworks Man @ Jul 14, 2014 -> 03:43 AM) Who's gonna play SS? It will be very ugly at ss if Sox trade him. They'd basically be pulling a Cubs move and be tanking for the draft.

QUOTE (Jake @ Jul 13, 2014 -> 04:10 PM) You'd have to have a very specific personality type to even begin to convince yourself that you're enjoying yourself in prison But if you can get drugs in prison and be a kingpin and be a thug, how bad can it be for some of the guys used to a life of crime? You get a good 3 meals a day and a place to live w/out rent the rest of your life. Hopefully the prisoners will make life difficult on the creep if he did indeed purposely let his baby die in the hot car.

QUOTE (zenryan @ Jul 12, 2014 -> 10:17 PM) nice selective memory. barely flinched? he got punched and stumbled or ran away. big man that AJP is, letting Scott Podsednik fight his battle with Barrett. I hope when you hate on AJP you are hating on a player who gave you a WS title. Without him, the White Sox do not win it all for the only time in your lifetime. Unless baseball changes its economic system dramatically, the Sox won't be winning any more in your lifetime. Maybe one if everything falls perfectly into place one magical year to come.

Sox willing to deal Beckham in "right deal now"
greg775 replied to Heads22's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Why is it so difficult to get rid of a first-round draft pick? My guess is the Sox brass will be afraid to pull the trigger and trade Beckham for scraps. It's tough to admit a first-round pick is mediocre at best, I guess. Trade him and bring up Semien and we lose nothing in the switcheroo. -
Good win for the team that is still trying to decide if it wants to be .500 or ultimately slide into the depths of last place. Thank God for Abreu. Holy cow how bad would this team be without him? He's the top slugger in baseball right now by far.
-
QUOTE (zenryan @ Jul 12, 2014 -> 03:55 PM) actually AJ would walk out, get punched in the face and then run off the field waving to the fans and act as if he just won some fight. I'd take AJP in a fight over our pathetic relief corps anyday. AJ is one of my favorite Sox of all time by far.
