Pathetic loss. Sox take 2-0 lead and can't hold it. Pity those fans who had to watch the five extra innings of pathetic non hitting. -

I'm done. Wasted too much time here. Hopefully Sox can somehow win this game. Four hits in 14 innings is crap. -

QUOTE (fathom @ Jul 5, 2014 -> 10:18 PM) I would love it if they just went in another direction and gave Nieto/Phegley more ABs after July. There's no way they can still believe he's their guy. Yeah by now Flowers has to be considered a bust. Your suggestion is what they should do IMO. -

QUOTE (Heads22 @ Jul 5, 2014 -> 10:17 PM) That play wasn't exactly a gold glove caliber one. I wanted Abreu to make a similar play on the one to him. -

That had to be one of the weakest at bats in big league history. Whiff. -

Too bad Abreu can't field like that. I do like Abreu though. -
Was surfing the web and came across Vissarion. This guy in the 1990s deemed himself Jesus revisiting the earth after getting laid off as a cop in Russia and started a religion, moved it to nowhereland in Siberia, and now there are 5,000 people in Siberia who follow him and worship him. He personally lives atop a mountain with his closest buddies also in houses up there next to his house. The rest of the folks live down below or in a neighboring city. They don't eat meat, they farm and build houses. Vissarion has a wife and six kids. They are a very peaceful group of people. They don't believe in negativity. They eat what they produce from the land. They have worship services. The little girls are raised to be homemakers. The little boys grow up to be builders/farmers. There is no money in the communities. Nobody has a cent. Vissarion paints during the day. He has a little scooter to get him up and down the mountain. He's a bit lazy. So do you think this Vissarion guy just wants sex whenever he can get it from the women who worship him? What's his motivation to do all this? After all he has to live in Siberia to pull this off. It's not like it's totally lavish or anything. I hear it gets cold there in winter. Do they have it all figured out and we are the idiots? Should we all move there? Vissarion comes across as kind of mean in interviews. If u are interested.

QUOTE (fathom @ Jul 5, 2014 -> 10:54 PM) I can't see them getting much back for him. If anything, wouldn't mind seeing him gone to free up some at bats for the young guys the last two months of the year. Exactly. Trade him for some fertilizer for the gorgeous outfield grass and call it a day on Dunn. -
I'm off this week so was watching some TV and caught Nancy Grace's bad act on TV. She wants to fry the motherf***er who left his 1.5 year old baby in a car as he sexted some women all day from the office. So the guy takes his son to Chik-Fil-A for breakfast then allegedly forgets to take him to daycare. Goes out to his car about noon for some reason. Finally leaves work in the afternoon, baby has died, he pretends he's all upset screaming that he killed his son. So to the attorneys out there ... is this guy doomed? He says it was an accident and forgot his son was in the car. I say, the MF is sexting a 17 year old at work and other women, showing pix of his erect member and his son bakes in the car and dies. Should this MF be locked up in jail and throw away the key or is he accorded this "mistake?" Any feelings on the case? To you parents ... could you forget your 1.5 year old is in the car on a hot day right after taking him to Chik-Fil-A? I say lock him up forever or kill him.

It's been a while since Dunn hit a home run, hasn't it been? Is he in one of those Dunn slumps? Haven't heard much from him lately. -

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Jul 5, 2014 -> 09:42 PM) Hey, he called those pitches. Doesn't matter. He wasn't the guy(s) choking it up on the mound. That walk was a killer, etc. -
The Heat had some great lines. Was on vacation this week so I went to Tammy despite the lousy reviews. It sucked. I see she wrote the movie and her hubby directed it or vice versa, thus the lines were not as funny as movies like The Heat. They made it a pseduo love story, which is a joke. No offense to McCarthy but she ain't a love story girl. Also made it a buddy movie, traveling with Susan Sarandon. A couple funny moments but the movie was pretty bad. I really had to kill some time and wanted to go to a movie. There actually were no better choices as I didn't see the first Jump Street and didn't want to go to the sequel w/out seeing No. 1. There was a point about 2/3 thru Tammy I remarked this is when I'd turn it off if it was on TV and I almost left the theatre. It just dawned on me at that point it was a lousy movie and wasn't gonna get any better.

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Jul 5, 2014 -> 09:40 PM) I'm ready to give up on Flowers. I just wish the org was. He had a huge sac fly to make it 2-0, though. The pen immediately let him down. -

I can't believe in retrospect Robin went with the lousy lefty to start the ninth. How can the Sox not save a 2 run lead? Pathetic effort by the pen. -

QUOTE (fathom @ Jul 5, 2014 -> 08:54 PM) Yep, I didn't even mind Surkamp starting that inning. It's just sad how awful the LOOGYs have been this year for the Sox. That's cause fathom loves lefty/lefty; righty/righty matchups from the sixth inning on. -
QUOTE (Chilihead90 @ Jul 5, 2014 -> 09:42 PM) The Cubs have an amazing collection of great hitting prospects, and if they are able to acquire pitching through trades or FA, then they could be a very good team in the next 3-5 years, but their major league roster is so devoid of good young talent, sans Rizzo, that no one should really be counting on anything yet. They've only won half the battle so far (developing a top farm system). The other battle is constructing a good major league team to match it. But they have what MANY on our board want, young prospects, top prospects. We have many on our board who just want prospects. Well the Cubs have a ton of em and thus are gonna win it all finally. That jinx appears to be Ova in the not so distant future.
-
So the draft lovers on this board can't have it both ways. You have to admit the Cubs are probably going to be regulars in the postseason for a pretty long stretch. If you are a draftnik (I use the term in a friendly way) you probably LOVE the Cubs' chances for success in the future. So many top players in the system now.
-
Any contender that wants Dunn will not be a contender much longer after acquiring him. He'll be a Sox the remainder of the season IMO.
-
Great win. Paulie baby. Sale, Tank, etc. This was like the old days. Great pitching and a lotta homers.
-
It's weird to have a starter as good as Sale on a last place team. It begs the question ... why should Sale pitch this September if we are still way out of the race? Isn't it dumb to pitch him much until the season we can contend? Just asking, but what does the team have to prove sending him out there the last 4-6 weeks if we are buried in the standings? Sox aren't selling tickets this season, so ... explain it to me. p.s. I am not stating my position on this matter. Everybody who studies this board knows I am all for winning EVERY game possible. Devil's advocate type topic.

QUOTE (Iwritecode @ Jul 3, 2014 -> 04:31 PM) I know a few people. They won’t come right out and say it in so many words, but they sure don’t have any motivation to stop receiving that check from the government and actually go out and look for a job to support themselves. They are perfectly content letting other people support them. I also know people who were thrilled to be on unemployment. I think if you are older, there is legitimate concern about anybody hiring you, but I know 30 somethings who have enjoyed a full year of unemployment and one guy I know who is 35 really doesn't want to work instead leech off the government checks. QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Jul 3, 2014 -> 04:47 PM) I knew people making 50-60K who lost there jobs at had zero motivation. In fact, the vast majority that lost their job in the recession, could have easily found other jobs, but opted out of it to sit around. Those were people with degrees who were qualified. They were "looking" if you mean, waiting around for a check hoping for a dream job to show up. Turned down other jobs which were comparable to what they had because it wasn't what they really really wanted and the cost/benefit of taking a job in their current spot vs. the government incentive wasn't that bad. I'd roughly say there were 20+ people I knew that did this at one point in time or another (some being good friends vs. just acquaintances / people within my work network). Yep. QUOTE (Iwritecode @ Jul 3, 2014 -> 04:55 PM) It sounds like those were at least temporary situations. A couple of the people I know have literally made it a lifestyle. One hasn’t had a job in the 10 plus years I’ve known him and another has never worked a day in her entire life. How have they pulled that off? I thought unemployment ran out in a year? The original post about people not looking for handouts. Don't believe it. I won't say people are inherently lazy, but people are creatures of habit and people get used to sitting around, doing nothing and collecting government money in a hurry. There is definite age discrimination going on though, now. It's harder for people over 50 to find a job because companies don't want to pay benefits and pay high salaries. Once the 50 something crowd is willing to work for peanuts so to speak like the 20 something crowd, they'll probably start getting employed again.

QUOTE (scs787 @ Jul 3, 2014 -> 04:56 PM) "But this pitch count thing, we’re in the American League," Cooper said. "We’re not in Little League. But nevertheless, people that bring up pitch counts are people who have nothing else to really know. And it just blows me away. They’re doing that to say, ‘God forbid if someone goes down, I told you so.’ And these are people that are not in the arena and never really played, so what kind of validity does any of that hold? Cooper is right, though it's always been that way and always will be that way regarding fans. Arm-chair quarterback is a term that is decades old. There's a lot of yapping going on from the gallery. That's why those guys get paid so much money, to put up with the second guessing. If the move works, we shut up. All a manager/coach can hope for is to shut up the fans. That means the team is playing well and the moves are working for the most part. Pitch counts are pretty stupid to get worked up about. If a guy has a no hitter going, there's no such thing as a pitch count.

Great pitching. Putnam again. It's been a strange season in that even the Sox players who generally stink have been heroes. L. Garcia comes through. Flowers has come through in certain games. DeAza. Tank, down the line. I guess Hawk is right. The team doesn't quit even though it has limited talent.
