Reinsdorf created the negative narrative — a 41-121 record, the most losses of any major league club since 1900. The 2025 team is potentially looking at another 100 losses. There is no wishing for failure. There currently IS failure and it’s the direct result of a terrible owner, not these “fake Sox fans” that you are trying to blame things on. Fans don’t build the team or choose to tank and rebuild repeatedly because they want to be cheap and save money. That is the direct decision of the man in charge.

Well, the irony is that Hahn managed to extend most of the Sox young players that were expected to become stars. The problem was that they didn’t all become stars due to injuries or other factors, or perhaps they just weren’t that good to begin with. However, per Getz’s recent comments, it sounds like the Sox won’t be using Hahn’s strategy of locking up young players until they truly prove themselves to be high quality players. But if you wait until young players prove themselves to be really good, are they still going to sign team-friendly extensions at that point or just wait until they hit free agency?

A player will give credit to his coaches all the time, even when the coaches suck. That’s just called being a good and PC teammate. Regarding your second paragraph, no, I don’t assume success considering the Sox poor track record. But that sure was a funny way to frame it.

I don’t think it’s a crazy argument. Do guys that are aces or potential aces need that much development time or do they just always have the talent and would be good without much or any guidance? Sale and Crochet had just over 10 innings in the minors before they were called up. Both were good in the majors immediately. Obviously, they are getting mentored by a pitching coach during those 10 innings or so in the minors and then in the majors, but are there just some starters with such good stuff and command/control that they would be successful with or without much development or mentoring?

Good question. It shouldn’t happen. But then again, why do we have a starting RF platoon of Tauchman (34) and Slater (32) on a rebuilding team? Both guys are older than Gallo (31). Not much has made sense when it comes to Getz’s roster decisions the past couple offseasons.

I actually think Gallo could hit that many homers if given the at bats. In his last 4 seasons, Gallo has averaged a homer every 15 at bats. In his most recent 3 seasons, Gallo has averaged a homer every 17 at bats. If you give Gallo a full season of at bats (around 500 or so) and he stays healthy, he could probably hit around 30 homers. Of course, the problem is that it will also come with a batting average below the Maldonado Line and a sub-.700 OPS, which ultimately makes his value next to nothing.

While this is true, his strikeouts were way down and his command was still not good. He walked far too many batters and threw quite a few absolute meatballs.

It’s early, so while people are joking, I don’t think he has maxed out at 84-85. But 84-85 max velocity ain’t working for anyone these days, pitcher or thrower.

I don’t see the Cubs trading Hoerner. He’s a 4 to 5 WAR player making $11.5 million this season and $12.5 million in 2026 for his age 28 and 29 seasons. Definitely worth his contract with the price of players these days. Also, wouldn’t the Padres prefer younger cheaper players with several years of control for Cease rather than 2 years of Hoerner? They would probably ask for Shaw first. The Cubs would have to at least throw a package of prospects (Horton, Caissie, etc.) at the Padres for Cease if they want to keep Shaw.

Bregman has played 9 games at 2B in his career. I guess it’s a good problem to have if you think he can play there. But we might see it happen since Devers is saying that 3B is his position.

I disagree with this. The Sox need Colson to pan out like the majority of their prospects for this rebuild to have a chance. I agree with the rest of what you said, but not every team is going to spend like the Dodgers, even the Cubs. However, rather than acquiring Bregman, what if they trade for Cease instead? That’s what fathom thinks is going to happen.

I heard this on sports radio last week — the Cubs definitely don’t like deferred money after the Lester and Heyward signings, so that makes sense. I still wouldn’t be all that surprised if the Cubs look wise for not upping their offer to Bregman with Shaw killing the ball by later this season. We would all be a lot more excited about Colson this season if he hit like Shaw did in the minors.
