I also watched an interview with Getz in which he stated the same thing. Boyer helped convince Jerry to sign Murakami because of the marketing dollars it would return. I don’t get why you seem to think this is some sort of conspiracy theory. We all know Jerry is a stingy bastard. EDIT: Here’s one video of AJP talking about it but I know there’s one of Getz saying it himself out there as well… I’m pretty sure that AJP is referencing the Getz interview when he basically said as much.

The main reason for the low payroll is the age of the players on the roster due to Jerry’s aversion to spending money in free agency and a continuous strategy of rebuilding. Mune was $34 million plus a $6.5 million posting fee. That’s chump change in today’s free agency.
